Hello everyone! Fantastic friends of good stories, I'm delighted to be back here at Hive Book Club, and well, I have a new review for you. I recently finished: A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross, and I need to talk about this because, wow!, she really did justice to everything that was said... Rebecca Ross, you might know her for her young adult fantasy books, right? Well, this is her first fantasy book, but for adults, and it's the first in a duology called Elements of Cadence... the truth is, before starting it, I saw it everywhere, seriously, with lots of people giving it 4 or 5 stars, really high marks! And now I totally understand why... the first thing that struck me was the atmosphere! I mean, this book transports you. Ross plunges you headfirst into Cadence Island, which is a fictional island, but it feels super Scottish... it's like you can smell the wet earth and hear the wind... the world-building, I mean, how the world is constructed, wow! It's brilliant. The island is split into two clans: those from the East, where Jack, our protagonist, comes from; and those from the West, the Breccans. And mind you, these two clans have hated each other for ages... each one has, like, their own vibe, they even wear their own tartans, those plaid Scottish fabrics. And their connection to the land and the spirits that live there is super important to the plot. It's not like the island is just a setting, right? Not at all! It almost feels like it's another character... then the vibe starts when Jack Tamerlane, who had been away for ten years, studying music on the mainland, has to return to the island. And why does he come back? Well, because girls from his clan are disappearing, just like that, without a trace... it turns out Jack is a bard, and back in Cadence, being a bard is a complicated thing, because there are spirits tied to the earth, water, fire, air... and they are powerful spirits, kind of capricious, and sometimes even a little scary, and the crazy thing is that they only pay attention to the music of a bard. So, who calls him? Adira, the clan heiress... who also happens to be his childhood archenemy! She calls him because they urgently need his help to talk to the spirits and find the girls. >Hola a todos! Amigos fantásticos de las buenas historias, encantado estoy de nuevamente estar por aquí en Hive Book Club, y bueno, les traigo una nueva reseña, recientemente termine: A River Enchanted de Rebecca Ross y, necesito que hablemos de esto porque, ¡wow!, de verdad que le hizo justicia a todo lo que se decía.. Rebecca Ross tal vez la ubican por sus libros de fantasía juvenil, ¿no? Bueno, este es su primer libro de fantasía pero ya para adultos, y es el primero de una duología que se llama Elements of Cadence.. la verdad, antes de empezarlo, yo lo veía por todos lados, en serio, mucha gente dándole 4 o 5 estrellas, ¡notas altísimas! Y ahora entiendo perfectamente por qué.. lo primero que me pegó fue ¡la atmósfera! O sea, este libro te transporta, Ross te mete de cabeza en la Isla de Cadence, que es una isla inventada, pero que se siente súper escocesa... es como si pudieras oler la tierra mojada y escuchar el viento.. el world-building, o sea, cómo está construido el mundo, ¡uff!, está genial, la isla está partida en dos clanes: los del Este, de donde viene Jack, nuestro prota; y los del Oeste, los Breccans. Y ojo, estos dos clanes se odian desde hace añísimos.. cada uno tiene como.. su propia onda, hasta usan sus propios tartanes, esas telas escocesas a cuadros.
Y su conexión con la tierra y los espíritus que viven ahí es súper importante para la trama, no es que la isla sea solo el escenario, ¿eh? ¡Para nada! Se siente casi como si fuera otro personaje más.. entonces, la onda arranca cuando Jack Tamerlane, que llevaba diez años fuera, estudiando música en el continente, tiene que volver a la isla. ¿Y por qué vuelve? Pues porque están desapareciendo chicas de su clan, así nomás, sin dejar rastro.. resulta que Jack es un bardo, y allá en Cadence, ser bardo es algo complicado, porque hay espíritus ligados a la tierra, al agua, al fuego, al aire... y son espíritus poderosos, medio caprichosos, y a veces hasta dan miedito, y lo loco es que solo le hacen caso a la música de un bardo. Así que, ¿quién lo llama? Adira, la heredera del clan... que además resulta ser ¡su archienemiga de la infancia! Lo llama porque necesitan urgente su ayuda para hablar con los espíritus y encontrar a las chicas. ---  Image generated with FLUX. Improved with KREA. --- Let's see, the way Ross writes... is beautiful, people, he describes everything super well, it sounds like poetry, but without being heavy-handed, it flows beautifully, he takes you by the hand through the story without you realizing it... and the rhythm, watch out!, seemed well-managed to me... I mean, there's always something happening that keeps you hooked on the mystery, but don't worry, he also takes his pauses so you can connect with the characters, so you understand their problems, their relationships, which are sometimes complicated. And he achieves something I loved: it's like... magical and intense at the same time, even kind of disturbing at times! That balance fascinated me, it has this whole vibe of an ancient tale, of folklore, super involved in the plot, using Scottish legends but in a way that feels new, original... speaking of characters, Jack is perfect for drawing you into the story. The guy returns to a place he no longer feels part of, carrying his own ghosts, and his dynamic with Adira... wow, they go from being childhood rivals to having to work together half-forced, a very complicated relationship... and maybe something more, that's important in the book, but not everything revolves around them. In fact, I got really hooked on the story of Adira's cousin, Tauren, and his wife, Sidra, who is like the healer/alchemist of the place, their relationship feels super real, it touches your heart... truly, it's a story with many important characters, that speaks of family, of duty, of being loyal to your people, to your clan. And the magic... wow!, the magic here is one of the strongest points... forget about explosions and colored lights, here the magic is embedded in the music, in nature, in ancient spells. The idea that spirits respond to Jack's harp, that the wind literally brings gossip! Or that those Scottish fabrics, the tartans, have magic to protect... all super creative and fits perfectly into the world he created, oh, and a fact for those who listen to audiobooks: I was told that the version with the narrator who has a Scottish accent is incredible! They say it immerses you even more in that atmosphere, which is already great in itself. If I had to find a but... mmm, maybe the part about Jack and Adira being "enemies" as kids felt a little weak compared to the tension they have now. But it's a small detail, and sometimes they sell it as dark fantasy, and yes, it has its dark moments, mysterious, even kind of creepy (especially with the spirits and the disappearances), but I would say it's more of an atmospheric fantasy, with a lot of folklore and mystery, don't expect anything super dark. >A ver, la forma en que escribe Ross.. es hermosa, gente, te describe todo súper bien, suena como poesía, pero sin ser pesada, fluye riquísimo, te lleva de la mano por la historia sin que te des cuenta.. y el ritmo, ¡ojo!, me pareció bien llevado.. o sea, siempre está pasando algo que te mantiene enganchado con el misterio, pero tranqui, también se toma sus pausas para que conectes con los personajes, para que entiendas sus problemas, sus relaciones que son complicados a veces. Y logra algo que me encantó: es como... mágico y a la vez intenso, ¡incluso medio inquietante por ratos! Ese balance me fascinó, tiene toda esta onda de cuento antiguo, de folclore, súper metida en la trama, usando leyendas escocesas pero de una forma que se siente nueva, original.. hablando de personajes, Jack es perfecto para meterte en la historia.
El tipo vuelve a un lugar del que ya no se siente parte, cargando sus propios fantasmas, y su dinámica con Adira... wow, pasan de ser rivales de chiquitos a tener que trabajar juntos medio a la fuerza, una relación complicadísima... y capaz algo más, eso es importante en el libro, pero no todo gira alrededor de ellos. De hecho, me enganché un montón con la historia del primo de Adira, Tauren, y su esposa, Sidra, que es como la curandera/alquimista del lugar, su relación se siente súper real, te llega al corazón.. en verdad, es una historia con muchos personajes importantes, que habla de la familia, del deber, de serle leal a tu gente, a tu clan. Y la magia... ¡wow!, la magia acá es uno de los puntos más fuertes.. olvídense de explosiones y luces de colores, acá la magia está metida en la música, en la naturaleza, en hechizos viejísimos. La idea de que los espíritus respondan al arpa de Jack, que el viento literalmente traiga chismes!
O que las telas esas escocesas, los tartanes, tengan magia para proteger.. todo súper creativo y encaja perfecto en el mundo que creó, ah, y un dato para los que escuchan audiolibros: me contaron que la versión con el narrador que tiene acento escocés es ¡Increíble! Dicen que te mete todavía más en esa atmósfera que ya de por sí es genial.. si le tuviera que buscar un 'pero'... mmm, quizás la parte de que Jack y Adira eran 'enemigos' de chicos se sintió un poco floja comparada con la tensión que tienen ahora. Pero es un detallito, y que a veces lo venden como fantasía oscura, y sí, tiene sus momentos oscuros, de misterio, hasta medio creepy (sobre todo con los espíritus y las desapariciones), pero yo diría que es más bien fantasía atmosférica, con mucho folclore y misterio, no esperen algo súper oscuro. ---  Created with Canva Pro. Let's see, people, if you're a fan of fantasy that immerses you in the atmosphere, if you love that folklore vibe (especially if you're into Celtic or Scottish), and if you enjoy well-crafted worlds and stories where the characters are the main focus, this book is for you. If you're more into fantasy that feels more... real, with magic but more grounded, instead of those super-epic stories of giant battles, you're going to love this one... mind you, even if you sometimes like romance in fantasy books! Here it's inserted in a way that feels super natural, it adds to the characters, it doesn't feel forced at all. In short: I give A River Enchanted a **4.5/5 stars**, the world building, the atmosphere, the author's writing... wow, spectacular! And the magic system, which is super original, plus the mystery that captivates you, kept me glued to the pages, I ended up feeling like I had been there, in Cadence, and dying to know what happens next... seriously, I highly recommend it if you are looking for a fantasy read that is well written, that envelops you and leaves you with that feeling of... magic... and well, that's all for today, see you in the next reviews, take care! A ver, gente, si son fans de la fantasía que te mete de lleno en la atmósfera, si les encanta esa onda de folclore (especialmente si les va lo celta o escocés), y si disfrutan de mundos bien armados y de historias donde los personajes son lo principal, este libro es para ustedes, si les gusta más la fantasía que se siente como... más real, con magia pero más pegada a la tierra, en vez de esas historias súper épicas de batallas gigantes, este les va a encantar.. ojo, ¡incluso si a veces les gusta el romance en los libros de fantasía! Acá está metido de una forma que se siente súper natural, le suma a los personajes, no se siente forzado para nada, en resumen: yo a A River Enchanted le doy un **4.5/5 estrellas**, la construcción del mundo, la atmósfera, cómo escribe la autora... ¡uff, espectacular!
Y el sistema de magia, que es súper original, más el misterio que te atrapa, me tuvieron pegadísimo a las páginas, terminé sintiéndome como si hubiera estado ahí, en Cadence, y muriéndome por saber qué pasa después.. en serio, se los súper recomiendo si andan buscando una lectura de fantasía que esté bien escrita, que te envuelva y te deje esa sensación como... mágica.. y bueno, esto es todo por hoy, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense!
