Ihli, loves to write these survival thrillers, and mind you, always with super strong female protagonists, the craziest thing is that many times she is inspired by real crimes, can you imagine? That adds that extra layer of "Oh my God, this could really happen" that gives you chills... heavy, my first impression was... how crazy! I mean, it catches you in a way... brutal! I devoured it, literally... do you know those books that you can't put down? You say "one more chapter" and suddenly it's 3 in the morning and you have to get up early, well, this is one of those, totally... the story follows Miley Petrovsky, who is an incredible chick, an Olympic biathlete – yes, one of those who skis and shoots, imagine! – but who has had a pretty bad time... she had a really bad car accident that, obviously, left her with heavy scars, not only on her body, but also on her head, she's dealing with phantom pain in her shoulder, one of those that drives you crazy, that pain is like... like a reflection of all the trauma she still has stored. So, to try to heal and regain strength, she accepts a job at one of these super luxurious resorts but lost in the middle of nowhere!, there in Idaho... a good plan to disconnect, right? Well... mistake, obviously, because this is a thriller, people! Things soon get ugly, really ugly... one day she goes out to train early in the woods - because of course, she keeps going hard, she's an Olympian! - boom! They take her, just like that, kidnapped by a couple of half-mad guys, father and son, Fred and Haish, who are one of those... what do you say? Ihli, le encanta escribir este rollo de thrillers de supervivencia, y ojo, siempre con protagonistas mujeres súper fuertes, lo más loco es que muchas veces se inspira en crímenes reales, ¿se imaginan? Eso le pone esa capa extra de "Dios mío, esto podría pasar de verdad" que te da un escalofrío... heavy, mi primera impresión fue... que loco! o sea, te atrapa de una manera... ¡brutal!
Me lo devoré, literal.. ubican esos libros que no puedes soltar? Que dices "un capítulo más" y de repente son las 3 de la mañana y tienes que levantarte temprano, bueno, este es uno de esos, totalmente.. la historia sigue a Miley Petrovsky, que es una tipa increíble, una biatleta olímpica – sí, de esas que esquían y le dan al tiro, ¡imagínense! – pero que la ha pasado bastante mal.. tuvo un accidente de coche súper fuerte que, obviamente, la dejó con cicatrices heavys, no solo en el cuerpo, sino también en la cabeza, anda lidiando con un dolor fantasma en el hombro, de esos que te vuelven loco, ese dolor es como... como el reflejo de todo el trauma que todavía tiene guardado. Entonces, para intentar sanar y volver a agarrar fuerza, acepta un trabajo en un resort de estos súper lujosos pero ¡perdido en medio de la nada!, allá en Idaho.. un buen plan para desconectar, ¿verdad?
Pues... error, obvio, ¡porque esto es un thriller, gente!, la cosa no tarda en ponerse fea, pero fea de verdad.. un día que sale a entrenar temprano por el bosque – porque claro, ella sigue dándole duro, ¡es una olímpica! – ¡pum! Se la llevan, así de la nada, la secuestran un par de tipos medio locos, padre e hijo, Fred y Haish, que son de estos... ¿cómo se dice? Preparacionistas, de esos que esperan el fin del mundo, pero nivel extremo.. se la llevan a su cabaña perdida en el monte y, de repente, la lucha de Miley ya no es por ganar medallas, ¡es por sobrevivir! ---  Image generated with FLUX. Improved with KREA. --- Okay, but what really caught me, what I thought was brutal!, was that the story is told from two sides, on one side, you have Miley living that nightmare, trying to survive, trying to outsmart these crazy guys... on the other, we follow Brent, who is her best friend and teammate, mind you, the guy has been super in love with her for a thousand years, but quietly... then, when Miley disappears, the police say "oh, it must have been a bear" and boom!, they even find some weird evidence, but Brent... Brent really knows her... he says "No way! That's not Miley!". He doesn't believe it, his stubbornness to find her, when everyone has already thrown in the towel, ugh!, it adds tremendous tension to the book, the whole time you're like "Oh, he's almost found her! He's one step away!", and that has you glued to the book, you can't stop! It's that up and down, that "will she make it in time or not?" that makes the story fly, you devour the pages... but hey, inside that cabin, Miley isn't completely alone. Here comes the crazy part: she meets Mary, another woman who's been held captive there for four years... she used to be called Raina, but they've broken her so much, they've brainwashed her to the point where she barely even knows who she is anymore. Imagine that! Seeing how Mary is hits you really hard, it shows you the horror of being kidnapped for so long, and it immerses you in the themes of trauma and psychological manipulation that the book touches on really well... lol, people, this is getting dense, there is a content warning for themes like loss of children, mentions of sexual assault, trauma... They don't show it to you like that, explicitly, but it's there, it's part of the characters' reality, especially what happened to Miley before and what happened to Mary... knowing that this was inspired, even a little, by a real case of a biathlete who was kidnapped... it leaves you thinking, it gives you even more chills... And Miley, what a character! She's not just strong in body, she's super intelligent, a total warrior, she has an incredible endurance capacity, seeing how she uses her head, her training, her pure determination to survive... it catches you, it hooks you! And that detail of the phantom pain in her shoulder, how it changes while she fights, wow! How well thought out... it's as if her physical healing went hand in hand with her internal battle, with her mind and her emotions. >Okay, pero lo que realmente me atrapó, lo que me pareció ¡brutal!, fue que la historia te la cuentan desde dos lados, por un lado, tienes a Miley viviendo esa pesadilla, intentando sobrevivir, tratando de ser más lista que estos tipos locos.. por el otro, seguimos a Brent, que es su mejor amigo y compañero de equipo, ojo, que el tipo está súper enamorado de ella desde hace mil años, pero calladito.. entonces, cuando Miley desaparece, la policía dice "ah, fijo fue un oso" y ¡pum!, hasta encuentran pruebas medio raras, pero Brent... Brent la conoce de verdad.. él dice "¡No, ni de vaina! ¡Esa no es Miley!". No se lo cree, esa terquedad de él por encontrarla, cuando ya todos tiraron la toalla, ¡uf!, le mete una tensión al libro... tremenda, todo el tiempo estás como "¡Ay, ya casi la encuentra! ¡Está a un paso!", y eso te tiene pegado al libro, ¡no puedes parar!
Es ese sube y baja, ese "¿llegará a tiempo o no?" que hace que la historia vuele, te devoras las páginas.. pero bueno, adentro de esa cabaña, Miley no está completamente sola. Ahí viene lo loco, conoce a Mary, otra mujer que lleva cuatro años secuestrada ahí.. antes se llamaba Raina, pero la han quebrado tanto, le han lavado el cerebro de tal manera, que ya casi no sabe ni quién es. ¡Imagínense eso! Ver cómo está Mary te pega durísimo, te muestra el horror de estar secuestrado tanto tiempo, y te mete de lleno en los temas de trauma y manipulación psicológica que el libro toca súper bien.. ljo, gente, esto se pone denso, hay advertencia de contenido por temas como pérdida de hijos, menciones de agresión sexual, trauma...
No te lo muestran así, explícito, pero está ahí, es parte de la realidad de los personajes, especialmente de lo que le pasó a Miley antes y lo de Mary.. saber que esto se inspiró, aunque sea un poco, en un caso real de una biatleta que secuestraron... te deja pensando, te da más escalofríos todavía.. Y Miley, ¡qué personajazo! No es solo fuerte de cuerpo, es súper inteligente, una guerrera total, tiene una capacidad de aguante increíble, ver cómo usa su cabeza, su entrenamiento, su pura garra para sobrevivir... ¡te atrapa, te engancha! Y ese detalle del dolor fantasma en el hombro, cómo va cambiando mientras ella lucha, ¡uff!, qué bien pensado.. es como si su curación física fuera de la mano con su batalla por dentro, con su mente y sus emociones. ---  Created with Canva Pro. But, honestly, it's just a minor thing, because the truth is it also serves to make Brent and Wes try harder to find her, so, well, it has its reason... now, what really blew my mind, and even more so for such a dark thriller!, was the ending, because, you know, a lot of thrillers leave you like "what now?" or they end on a downer, right? But this one... this one does give you closure, people, without wanting to spoil anything, it kind of ties up the stories of the main characters, and it feels good, like they deserved it after so much shit... it leaves you with a taste of hope after so much darkness... that was cool! It was a good twist. So, who is this book for? Definitely for fans of fast-paced, action-packed psychological thrillers, if you like survival stories, if you like badass female protagonists who are determined and fight their hardest, and if you don't mind getting into heavy topics... this one's for you, dad! The tension doesn’t let go for a second, you really don’t know what’s going to happen, and you’ll be rooting for Miley from the beginning to the end, I give Gray After Dark a... solid **4.5/5 stars.**.. I’m taking off half a star just because of that romantic plot twist that didn’t quite work for me, but everything else, the pace, the nail-biting tension, how deep the characters are, how it explores trauma and resilience, and that ending that leaves you super satisfied! make it a unique thriller! If you’re looking for a book that will have you glued to your seat and thinking about it days after finishing it, give it a chance... and well, that’s it for today’s review, see you in the next reviews, take care! Bye! >A ver, si le busco algo, un detallito nomás, podría ser ese rollito medio triángulo amoroso que se arma con Brent y otro chavo del resort, Wes, los dos ahí como que queriendo con Miley.. se sintió un poquito... ¿raro?, ¿metido a la fuerza con todo el desmadre de vida o muerte que estaba pasando? Pero, sinceramente, es una cosita de nada, porque la verdad también sirve para que Brent y Wes le echen más ganas a buscarla, así que, bueno, tiene su porqué.. ahora, lo que sí me voló la cabeza, ¡y más para ser un thriller tan oscuro!, fue el final, porque, a ver, muchos thrillers te dejan así como "¿y ahora qué?" o terminan todo bajón, ¿no? Pero este... este sí te da cierre, gente, sin querer spoilear nada, como que amarra bien las historias de los personajes principales, y se siente bien, como que se lo merecían después de tanta vaina.. te deja un saborcito de esperanza después de tanta oscuridad.. eso estuvo chido! Fue un buen giro.
Entonces, ¿para quién es este libro? De ley para los fans de los thrillers psicológicos que van a mil por hora, llenos de acción, si te laten las historias de supervivencia, si te gustan las protagonistas mujeres que son unas chingonas, que le echan ganas y pelean con todo, y si no te da cosa meterte en temas pesados... ¡este es el tuyo, papá! La tensión no te suelta ni un segundo, de verdad no sabes qué va a pasar, y a Miley la vas a estar apoyando desde el principio hasta el final, a Gray After Dark yo le doy unas... sólidas **4.5/5 estrellas**.. le quito media estrellita nomás por ese enredo romántico que no me terminó de cuajar, pero todo lo demás, el ritmo, la tensión que te comes las uñas, lo profundos que son los personajes, cómo explora el trauma y la resiliencia, y ese final que te deja ¡súper satisfecho! ¡lo hacen un thriller único! si buscan un libro que los tenga pegados al asiento y pensando en él días después de terminarlo denle una oportunidad.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, nos vemos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense!
