Hello everyone, my reading fanatic friends, I hope you are all doing super well, this time, I want to share with you all, my dear Hive Book Club community... I have to tell you a little bit about this book: King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo, and hold on because there are a lot of things, you know, this is like the next level of the Grishaverse, right after Kingdom of Thieves, and with this the Scarred King duology starts... I was super excited especially to see Nikolai again, what a great character in the original trilogy, but, to be honest, I was also nervous, like, what else is Leigh going to invent for us with these characters? And beware, small spoiler alert or rather a piece of advice!: YOU NEED!, but in capital letters, to have read the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology before getting into this one... believe me, to fully understand the whole world, the magic system which is a mess and who's who, is KEY to enjoying it one hundred percent... then, the plot puts the absolute protagonist in our beloved Nikolai Lantsov, who is now the king of a Ravka in ruins and, phew!, right in the eye of the storm. The guy is not only dealing with the typical problems of a king - a country in ruins by war, alliances hanging by a thread - but he's also fighting with an internal darkness, but literal, that terrifying curse that turns him into the Nichir Voya, getting into his head was, wow!, fascinating. I loved seeing her thoughts, her fears, and especially those flashbacks with her brother Vasily that really hit home... she gave so much more depth to the charming and super-smart corsair prince we already knew, showing us the brutal pressure and how vulnerable he is underneath all that facade. You really feel how bad she's having it trying to keep Ravka afloat while, at the same time, fighting the monster inside her... AND THEN THERE'S ZOYA NAZYALENSKY! Oh my God, Zoya! If you, like me or many others, weren't BIG fans of her in Shadow and Bone, this book, ugh!, is going to blow your mind and maybe even change your mind. Here we get fully into her point of view, we see her past traumas, her deadly loyalties, and everything that made her the powerful Grisha that she is. It gives her a super powerful voice, and it's really deserved! And her clashes with Nikolai? Pure gold, those acidic comments they throw at each other, the wit... a gem to read! That complicated romantic tension, simmering slowly between them, had many, including me, hooked. Honestly, those two are some of the best things in the book. >Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de la lectura, espero que les estén super bien, en esta ocasión, quiero compartir con todos ustedes querida comunidad de Hive Book Club.. tengo que contarles un poco de este libro: King of Scars de Leigh Bardugo, y agárrense porque hay un montón de cosas, ya saben, este es como el siguiente nivel del Grishaverso, justo después de El Reino de los Ladrones, y con este arranca la duología de El Rey Marcado.. yo estaba súper emocionado sobre todo por volver a ver a Nikolai, qué personajazo en la trilogía original, pero, siendo sincero, también tenía mis nervios, en plan, ¿qué más nos va a inventar Leigh con estos personajes?
Y ojo, ¡pequeño spoiler alert o más bien un consejo de pana!: ¡NECESITAN!, pero así en mayúsculas, haberse leído la trilogía de Sombra y Hueso y la duología de Seis de Cuervos antes de meterse con este.. créanme, para entender bien todo el rollo del mundo, el sistema de magia que es un quilombo y quién es quién, es CLAVE para disfrutarlo al cien por cien.. entonces, la trama nos pone de protagonista absoluto a nuestro queridísimo Nikolai Lantsov, que ahora es el rey de una Ravka hecha polvo y, ¡uf!, en el mero ojo del huracán. El tipo no solo está lidiando con los problemas típicos de un rey –un país en ruinas por la guerra, alianzas que penden de un hilo– sino que también está peleando con una oscuridad interna, pero literal, esa maldición terrorífica que lo convierte en el Nichir Voya, meterse en su cabeza fue, ¡wow!, fascinante. Amé ver sus pensamientos, sus miedos, y sobre todo esos flashbacks con su hermano Vasily que te tocan la fibra.. le dio muchísima más profundidad al príncipe corsario encantador y súper listo que ya conocíamos, mostrándonos la presión brutal y lo vulnerable que es debajo de toda esa fachada.
De verdad sientes cómo la está pasando mal tratando de mantener Ravka a flote mientras, al mismo tiempo, lucha contra el monstruo que lleva dentro.. Y LUEGO ESTÁ ZOYA NAZYALENSKY! ¡Ay, Dios mío, Zoya! Si ustedes, como me pasó a mí o a varios, no eran TAN fans de ella en Sombra y Hueso, este libro, ¡uff!, les va a volar la cabeza y chance hasta cambian de opinión, acá nos metemos de lleno en su punto de vista, vemos sus traumas del pasado, sus lealtades a muerte y todo lo que la convirtió en la Grisha tan power que es. Le da una voz súper potente y ¡muy merecida, la verdad! ¿Y sus cruces con Nikolai? Oro puro, esos comentarios ácidos que se tiran, el ingenio... ¡una joyita leerlos! esa tensión romántica complicada, que se va cocinando a fuego lento entre ellos, a muchos, incluyéndome, nos tuvo enganchadísimos, de verdad, ellos dos son de lo mejorcito del libro. ---  Image generated with FLUX. Our favorite Bleeder from Six of Crows, also has a really big piece of history here, a good part of the book focuses on her journey, and it's really great that they gave space to her grief for Matthiasl, they didn't overlook it or rush it, and that's really appreciated, because seriously, that part broke all of our hearts... the thing is that she returns to Fjerda on a super dangerous mission to save other Grisha, and there are some really interesting new dynamics. I'm even keeping an eye out for a possible new romance, that leaves you intrigued... And since we're talking about connections, there's a BEAUTIFUL nod for Six of Crows fans with the appearance of Leoni, it turns out her last name is a tribute to Jesper's mom, Aditi Hilli, what a detail, please, how exciting... Leoni as a character is the best, optimistic, brilliant, a genius, she ends up representing the Makers in the Grisha Triumvirate, which I thought was a great idea, super well thought out. The book is told from several points of view, mainly Nikolai, Zoya, and Nina... and most of the time, Bardugo handles it super well, but, to be honest, Nina's story, although important and gripping, at times felt a little disconnected from what was happening with Nikolai and Zoya in Ravka, it was almost like reading two novels at the same time, you know? Two separate stories that you know are going to intersect at some point, but in this first book, sometimes the seams were noticeable, do you understand? And speaking of first parts, THAT ENDING, PEOPLE! Hold on because there's one of those cliffhangers coming that will leave you with your mouth open and some twists that, wow, will make you doubt everything you thought you knew, it will leave you DYING to read Reign of the Wolf, that's what I tell you! But, and here's a "but" that some readers have mentioned, the decision to split this story into a duology perhaps worked against the pacing of The Marked King a little, especially in the final part... it felt like everything was rushed all at once towards the climax, only for BAM!, the curtain was suddenly brought down on you, perhaps a little before the story was ready for a break, don't you think? >Y Nina Zenik, ¡uff!, nuestra Sangradora favorita de Seis de Cuervos, también tiene un pedazo de historia bien grande acá, buena parte del libro se enfoca en su viaje, y ¡qué bueno, la verdad!, que le dieran espacio a su duelo por Matthiasl, no lo pasaron por alto ni lo apuraron, y eso se agradece un montón, porque en serio, esa parte nos rompió el corazón a todos.. la cosa es que ella vuelve a Fjerda en una misión súper peligrosa para salvar a otros Grisha, y ahí se arman unas dinámicas nuevas bien interesantes, ¡My hasta ojito con un posible nuevo romance, eso te deja con la intriga.. Y ya que estamos hablando de conexiones, hay un guiño HERMOSO para los fans de Seis de Cuervos con la aparición de Leoni, resulta que su apellido es un homenaje a la mamá de Jesper, Aditi Hilli, qué detallazo, por favor, qué emoción.. Leoni como personaje es lo más, optimista, brillante, una genia, termina representando a los Fabricantes en el Triunvirato Grisha, que me pareció un puntazo, súper bien pensado.
El libro nos lo cuentan desde varios puntos de vista, principalmente Nikolai, Zoya y Nina.. y la mayor parte del tiempo, Bardugo lo maneja súper bien, pero, siendo honestos, la historia de Nina, aunque es importante y te engancha, a ratos se sentía como un poco desconectada de lo que pasaba con Nikolai y Zoya en Ravka, era casi como estar leyendo dos novelas al mismo tiempo, ¿saben? Dos historias separadas que uno sabe que en algún momento se van a cruzar, pero en este primer libro, a veces como que se notaban las costuras, ¿me explico?
Y hablando de primeras partes, ¡ESE FINAL, GENTE Agárrense porque se viene un cliffhanger de esos que te dejan con la boca abierta y unos giros que, wow, te van a hacer dudar de todo lo que creías saber, te deja MURIÉNDOTE por leer El Reinado del Lobo, ¡así les digo! Pero, y aquí va un "pero" que algunos lectores han comentado, la decisión de partir esta historia en una duología quizás le jugó un poco en contra al ritmo de El Rey Marcado, sobre todo en la parte final.. se sintió como que todo se apuró de golpe hacia el clímax, solo para que ¡PUM!, te bajaran el telón de repente, quizás un poquito antes de que la historia estuviera lista para una pausa, ¿no creen? ---  Created with Canva Pro. [Image Source](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36307634-king-of-scars) --- Well, this book was sold to us as THE Nikolai book –and obviously he’s super central– but I completely understand those who felt that the focus was more spread out than we expected… with Zoya’s story being so powerful and gripping, plus the tremendous plot that Nina has on her side, at times it felt less like Nikolai’s personal journey alone and more like a general Ravka story, almost a direct sequel to how the world ended up after Shadow and Bone… this isn’t bad at all, just something to keep in mind if you’re expecting everything to revolve solely around him… Overall, I really enjoyed this book, the way they develop Nikolai and Zoya is a gem, and the chemistry between them is, without a doubt, one of the strongest parts of the book, a delight! Nina's journey reaches you, moves you and has a lot of action... but, that feeling that sometimes the different points of view didn't quite come together and that somewhat rushed ending, which is surely a matter of it being a duology, were the little details that made me not give it a perfect score, so, who is going to like this book? Look, if you're already deep into the Grishaverse, and especially if you loved Nikolai and were dying to see more in depth about Zoya, you're going to love it, I tell you, fans of political intrigue mixed with really powerful magic, and characters who are struggling with their traumas and giant responsibilities, are going to have something to entertain themselves for a while. Despite those structural stumbles, it's an addition to the Grishaverse that grabs you and often shines... the great moments are, ugh!, sky-high, and it leaves everything ready for what is sure to be an epic ending! I'm already more than signed up for Reign of the Wolf... Bye! >A ver, nos vendieron este libro a full como EL libro de Nikolai –y obvio que él es súper central– pero entiendo perfecto a los que sintieron que el foco como que se repartió más de lo que esperábamos.. con la historia de Zoya siendo tan potente y que te engancha tanto, más la tremenda trama que tiene Nina por su lado, a ratos se sintió menos como el viaje personal de Nikolai solito y más como una historia general de Ravka, casi casi una secuela directa de cómo quedó todo el mundo después de Sombra y Hueso.. esto no es que esté mal, para nada, solo para que lo tengan en cuenta si van esperando que todo gire únicamente alrededor de él..
En general, la verdad es que disfruté este libro, cómo desarrollan a Nikolai y a Zoya es una joya, y la química entre ellos es, sin duda, de lo más fuerte del libro, ¡una delicia! El viaje de Nina te llega, te mueve cosas y tiene muchísima acción.. peero, esa sensación de que a veces los distintos puntos de vista no terminaban de cuajar del todo y ese final medio apurado, que seguro es cosa de que sea una duología, fueron los detallitos que hicieron que no le diera el puntaje perfecto, entonces, ¿a quién le va a gustar este libro? Miren, si ya están metidísimos en el Grishaverso, y sobre todo si amaban a Nikolai y tenían unas ganas locas de ver más a fondo a Zoya, les va a encantar, se los digo, a los fans de la intriga política mezclada con magia bien power, y personajes que la están luchando con sus traumas y responsabilidades gigantes, van a tener para entretenerse un buen rato.
A pesar de esos tropezones en la estructura, es una adición al Grishaverso que te atrapa y que muchas veces brilla con luz propia.. los momentazos son ¡uff!, altísimos, y te deja todo servido para lo que seguro va a ser un final ¡épico! Yo, ya estoy más que apuntado para El Reinado del Lobo.. le doy un **4/5**.. bien merecido, y bueno.. eso es todo por hoy amigos de Hive, espero que les haya gustado esta reseña, nos veremos en las próximas, cuidense mucho!
