Hello everyone, Hive friends, dear Hive Book Club community, I hope you're all doing great! This time I'm bringing you a new review, with my personal opinions. This time I'm going to talk about the book: Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, and I have a ton to tell you! You know when a book has too much hype and you get all excited but also with that little fear of "what if it's not that bad"? Well, that's exactly what I was with this one. It's Bardugo's first book for adults, and let's see, in general I was interested... but, be careful, it wasn't perfect for me, to begin with, the premise... how intriguing! We have Galaxy "Alex" Stern, who comes from a past... let's say complicated, she dropped out of school, was on bad paths, you can imagine the whole thing... and suddenly, bang! She gets into Yale. The trap? She didn’t get in because she’s a brainiac, no sir, she got in because she has this super rare ability to see ghosts –or “Greys,” as they call them– without needing any extra magic… and it seems that this makes her valuable to one of the secret societies at Yale, this society, the House of Lethe (the Ninth House of the title, obviously!), are basically the ‘cops’ of magic. They’re in charge of keeping an eye on the other ancient secret societies on campus that are playing with all kinds of magic: glamour, necromancy, portals… you name it, it’s this crazy mix of dark academia and urban fantasy, and the truth is, Yale University itself feels like another character, the author does a good job creating this super atmospheric, kind of murky, ivy-filled environment… like you almost believe in that dark magic. The worldbuilding, the whole societies and their magic… that was the most mind-blowing thing for me. I loved learning about the different houses and what they do. They use magic for everything from moving the stock market to enchanting things, oftentimes just to keep their privileged members rich and powerful. Which felt terrifyingly real, actually. There’s a society, Manuscript, that uses glamour magic, and there’s a wild party scene that Alex goes to that was just wow. So vivid, so psychedelic. You just felt the magic coming from it like it was a really strong drug. One of the things I really liked was how Bardugo slips in little details about the magic systems in between chapters, like pages from a House Lethe guidebook. It kept the main story flowing without bogging you down with long-winded explanations, which was really smart because the book is dense. >Hola a todos, amigos de Hive, querida comunidad de Hive Book Club, espero que estén genial! En esta ocasión les traigo una nueva reseña, con mis opiniones personales, está vez les voy a hablar del libro: Ninth House de Leigh Bardugo y tengo un montón de cosas que contarles! ¿Saben cuando un libro tiene demasiado hype y como que llegas emocionado pero también con ese miedito de "y si no es pa' tanto"? Bueno, así mismito estaba yo con este, es el primer libro para adultos de Bardugo, y a ver, en general me interesaba.. pero, ojo, no fue perfecto para mí, de entrada, la premisa.. qué cosa más intrigante! Tenemos a Galaxy "Alex" Stern, que viene de un pasado... digamos que complicado, dejó la escuela, andaba en malos pasos, ya se imaginan el rollo... y de repente ¡zas! La meten en Yale.
La trampa? No entró por cerebrito, no señor, entró porque tiene esta habilidad súper rara de ver fantasmas –o "Grises", como les dicen– sin necesitar nada de magia extra.. y parece que eso la hace valiosa para una de las sociedades secretas de Yale, esta sociedad, la Casa Lethe (la Novena Casa del título, ¡obvio!), son básicamente los 'polis' de la magia. Se encargan de vigilar a las otras sociedades secretas antiguas del campus que andan jugando con todo tipo de magia: que si glamour, que si nigromancia, que si portales.. lo que se les ocurra, s esta mezcla bien loca de dark academia con fantasía urbana, y la verdad, la misma universidad de Yale se siente como un personaje más, la autora lo hace bien creando este ambiente súper atmosférico, medio turbio, lleno de hiedra... como que esa magia oscura casi te la crees.
La construcción del mundo, todo el rollo de las sociedades y su magia... eso fue lo que más me voló la cabeza, me encantó ir descubriendo las diferentes casas y a qué se dedican.. usan la magia para todo, desde mover la bolsa de valores hasta encantar cosas, muchas veces solo para que sus miembros privilegiados sigan siendo ricos y poderosos... lo cual se sintió aterradoramente real, la verdad, hay una sociedad, Manuscrito, que usa magia de glamour, y hay una escena de una fiesta salvaje a la que va Alex que fue ¡wow! Tan vívida, tan psicodélica... sentías la magia como si fuera una droga potentísima, algo que me gustó mucho fue cómo Bardugo mete detallitos de los sistemas de magia en pedacitos entre capítulos, como si fueran páginas de una guía de la Casa Lethe.. eso hizo que la historia principal fluyera sin atorarte con explicaciones larguísimas, lo cual fue súper inteligente porque este libro es denso. ---  Image generated with FLUX. Improved with KREA. --- Well, let’s talk about Alex, shall we? Alex… what a character, eh, she’s got her thing, she makes mistakes, she’s kind of rude, like she doesn’t let anyone get close to her easily… and to be honest, it was hard for me to connect with her at first, but as you read on and you learn about her whole past, which is super traumatic –and has everything to do with seeing ghosts and the horrible things that happened to her because of that–, the truth is that you start to understand her… she has a strength, which I ended up respecting a lot, mind you, here I do have to tell you: this book is strong, it comes with content warnings for sexual assault, abuse of various kinds, drugs, overdose, death, grief… a little bit of everything, seriously! But –and this is key– I didn’t feel like anything was gratuitous, it’s not like they put it in just to shock, everything feels connected to what Alex is going through and how dark this world of powerful and often corrupt people is… you do feel like there is a feminist theme there, exploring power and things like rape culture, and I think it was handled carefully. My main problem with the book was the pacing, especially at the beginning… it starts off sloooow, very, very slow… easily the first 150, 200 pages, I found it hard to follow the thread, the truth is, they throw you suddenly into this super complex world, with a ton of societies, jumps in time between what Alex is going through now and what happened to her mentor, Darlington, months before… and yes, it can be a bit confusing to keep track of everything. There’s a mystery, a murder that Alex begins to investigate, suspecting that it has to do with societies, and that’s what starts to move the plot, once that mystery takes off, more or less halfway through the book, boom! the pace speeds up a lot and things start to make sense, the whole web of connections that Bardugo puts together is super intricate and it really does feel cool when everything fits together in the end. But yeah, that slow start was great, and it made it harder to connect with the characters at first… although the world is great, at times I felt that some little details of the plot or why the characters did certain things could have been explained a little more to make them hit harder, not that it ruins the book or anything, just little things that took me out of the story a little bit. >Bueno, hablemos de Alex, ¿no? Alex... qué personaje, eh, tiene lo suyo, comete errores, es medio borde, como que no deja que nadie se le acerque fácil.. y siendo sincero, me costó un buen conectar con ella al principio, pero conforme vas leyendo y te enteras de todo su pasado, que es súper traumático –y que tiene todo que ver con eso de ver fantasmas y las cosas horribles que le pasaron por eso–, la verdad que empiezas a entenderla.. tiene una fuerza, que terminé respetando un montón, ojo, aquí sí tengo que decirles: este libro es fuerte, trae advertencias de contenido por agresión sexual, abuso de varios tipos, drogas, sobredosis, muerte, duelo... ¡de todo un poco, en serio!
Pero –y esto es clave– no sentí que nada fuera gratuito, no es que lo metieran solo para shockear, todo se siente conectado con lo que vive Alex y con lo oscuro que es este mundo de gente poderosa y muchas veces corrupta.. sí se siente que hay un tema feminista por ahí, explorando el poder y cosas como la cultura de la violación, y creo que lo manejó con cuidado. Mi problema principal con el libro fue el ritmo, sobre todo al inicio.. arranca leeeento, muy, muy lento.. fácil las primeras 150, 200 páginas, me costaba seguirle el hilo, la verdad, es que te avientan de golpe a este mundo súper complejo, con un montón de sociedades, saltos en el tiempo entre lo que vive Alex ahora y lo que le pasó a su mentor, Darlington, meses antes... y sí puede ser medio confuso seguirle la pista a todo.
Hay un misterio, un asesinato que Alex empieza a investigar, sospechando que tiene que ver con las sociedades, y eso es lo que empieza a mover la trama, una vez que ese misterio agarra vuelo, más o menos a la mitad del libro, ¡pum! el ritmo se acelera un montón y las cosas empiezan a tener sentido, toda la red de conexiones que arma Bardugo es súper intrincada y la verdad sí se siente chido cuando todo encaja al final. Pero sí, ese inicio lento estuvo cañón, y pues hizo más difícil conectar con los personajes al principio.. aunque el mundo está genial, a veces sentí que algunos detallitos de la trama o por qué los personajes hacían ciertas cosas, pudieron explicarse un poquito más para que pegaran más fuerte, no es que arruine el libro ni nada, solo cositas que me sacaron un poquito de la historia. ---  Created with Canva Pro. It leaves you with such a brutal cliffhanger that I already need the next one. It closes the main mystery, yes, but it leaves you with some really intriguing questions! So, who is this book for? If you like the dark academia vibe, urban fantasy with really dark vibes, and you don't mind a slow start, give it a chance! Those who are already fans of younger-level magic academies books should definitely be prepared for the tough stuff. I give this book **4/5 stars**... the world, the atmosphere, that original magic, and Alex's raw development are all super strong points, and the ending... wow, brutal! And although the slow pace of the first half slows it down a bit, the truth is that the strength of the second part and its originality, which is everything, lift it a lot for me, that's why I gave it that rating... I'm glad I read it, yes I was hooked to continue with the series, but it wasn't that love at first sight that blows your mind, which I perhaps expected due to all the noise it brought... well, that would be all for today, we'll see you in the next reviews, take care! Así que, ¿para quién es este libro? Si les gusta la onda dark academia, la fantasía urbana con rollos bien oscuros, y no les importa que arranque despacito, ¡denle una oportunidad! Los que ya son fans de los libros más juveniles de academias se magia sí o sí tienen que ir preparados para los temas fuertes, yo le doy a este libro unas **4/5 estrellas**.. el mundo, la atmósfera, esa magia tan original y la evolución tan cruda de Alex son puntos súper fuertes, y el final... ¡uff, brutal!
Y aunque el ritmo lento de la primera mitad le baja un poquito, la verdad es que la fuerza de la segunda parte y lo original, que es todo, lo levantan un montón para mí, por eso le doy esa calificación.. me da gusto haberlo leído, sí me quedé picado para seguir con la serie, pero no fue ese amor a primera vista que te vuela la cabeza, que quizás esperaba por todo el ruido que traía.. bueno, esto sería todo por hoy, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense mucho!
