I'll be giving you my opinions on: One by One by Freida McFadden. Everyone seems to be devouring her thrillers, and they always say they're the kind you read super fast, the famous "popcorn thrillers," perfect for an afternoon when you just want to dive into a story without thinking too much. And the truth is, that's exactly what it was like to read this one: super fast, the premise is a classic, just the kind of themes that grab me! You have three couples –that's, six friends– who go on vacation for a week to a semi-luxurious, but super isolated cabin or inn, deep in the woods. Sounds like there's going to be a huge problem, right? And yes, their brand new truck, bam!, conveniently breaks down on a dirt road, far from anywhere, still a few miles from arriving... instead of, well, you know, thinking it over and going back to where there's a signal, they decide it's a good idea to walk through the woods following a little map... and since the title One by One already tells you in a bad way, things start to get ugly... you quickly wonder who the culprit is and who the hell you can trust, if you can even trust anyone, it has that delicious "locked room" vibe, but in this case, it's a "locked woods"! What McFadden does to keep you hooked, which is something I normally really like, is to use alternating narrators... a large part of the story is told by Claire, one of the wives, who poor thing is in a pretty unhappy and loveless marriage... then, interspersed with, mind you, he throws at you some very disturbing chapters by an anonymous narrator. This character tells you about a troubled childhood, filled with abuse, and it quickly becomes clear that he's now a violent, mentally challenged adult. A big part of the mystery, and what kept me flipping the pages like crazy, is trying to figure out which of the six people on this failed trip is this anonymous, half-deranged voice... that's what really gets your hair on end! >Hola a todos, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir a todos ustedes, amigos de Hive Book Club una nueva reseña, les quiero hablar sobre un libro que me dejó con sentimientos encontrados, les daré mis opiniones de: One by One de Freida McFadden.. Todo el mundo parece estar devorando sus thrillers, y siempre dicen que son de esos que te lees súper rápido, los famosos "thrillers palomiteros", perfectos para una tarde en la que solo quieres clavarte en una historia sin pensar mucho.. y la verdad, así mismito fue leer este: rapidísimo, la premisa es un clásico, ¡justo el tipo de temas que me atrapa! Tienes a tres parejitas –o sea, seis compas– que se van de vacaciones una semana a una cabaña o posada medio lujosa, pero súper aislada, en lo profundo del bosque.. suena a que se va a armar tremendo problema, ¿verdad?
Y pues sí, su camioneta nuevecita, ¡zas!, convenientemente se les descompone en un camino de terracería, bien lejos de todo, todavía a unos kilómetros de llegar.. en lugar de, pues, ya saben, pensarle tantito y regresarse a donde haya señal, deciden que es buena idea caminar por el bosque siguiendo un mapita.. y como el título Uno por Uno ya te lo va cantando con mala onda, las cosas se empiezan a poner feas.. rápidamente te preguntas quién es el culpable y en quién diablos puedes confiar, si es que se puede confiar en alguien, tiene esa vibra deliciosa de "cuarto cerrado", pero en este caso, ¡es un "bosque cerrado"!
Lo que hace McFadden para mantenerte picado, que es algo que normalmente me gusta un montón, es usar narradores que se van turnando.. gran parte de la historia nos la cuenta Claire, una de las esposas, que la pobre está en un matrimonio bastante infeliz y sin amor.. luego, intercalados, ¡ojo!, te avienta unos capítulos bien perturbadores de un narrador anónimo. Este personaje te cuenta una infancia problemática, llena de abusos, y rapidito te queda claro que ahora es un adulto bien violento y con la cabeza revuelta. Gran parte del misterio, y lo que me tuvo pasando las páginas como loco, es tratar de adivinar cuál de los seis de este viajecito fallido es esta voz anónima y medio desquiciada.. eso sí que te tiene con los pelos de punta! ---  Image generated with FLUX. It seems like everyone has their dirty laundry that they don't want to come to light, and in a situation of so much stress and so much isolation, well, obviously! You know everything's going to end up coming out. But anyway, this is where things, for me, kind of started to slow down a little, my people... because look, although it's a read that you get through quickly—I devoured it, to be honest—the writing style... well, it didn't always end up convincing me. Some of the dialogues felt especially strange, clumsy, and honestly, at times, it was quite "cringey," the kind that makes you feel sorry for others. There were times when the characters would blurt out something super obvious as if it were the discovery of the century, and that, well, it threw me off a bit, broke the magic... Their writing style can sometimes feel a bit amateurish, or like it lacks meat, depth. It's as if the main idea were strong, the foundations of a good thriller are there, but the prose, the way of narrating and how the characters spoke, often felt too simple... at times I felt like I was reading something written for a much smaller, younger audience, just because of the vocabulary they used and how the conversations unfolded. And this, well, logically, affected how I liked the characters... how the dialogue that followed felt kind of forced or unnatural, since the characters didn't feel entirely well-constructed or with motivations that you really believed in, they did their job to move the plot forward, yes, but I never felt a deep connection with them, nor did I really understand what was going on with their inner world beyond the pure drama of the moment. >Y el misterio, ¡ojo!, no es solo quién será el asesino al final, sino que también se alimenta de todas las dinámicas bien retorcidas que hay en el grupo.. hay infidelidades por ahí escondidas, un montón de resentimientos guardados y comportamientos medio controladores que están ahí, a punto de explotar, parece que cada uno tiene sus trapitos sucios que no quieren que salgan a la luz, y en una situación de tanto estrés y tan aislados, pues ¡obvio!, sabes que todo va a terminar saliendo. Pero bueno, aquí es donde la cosa, para mí, como que empezó a bajar un poquito el ritmo, mi gente.. porque miren, aunque es una lectura que te avientas rápido –yo me lo devoré, la verdad– el estilo de escritura... pues como que no siempre me terminó de convencer, algunos de los diálogos se sentían especialmente raros, torpes, y la neta, a veces, bastante "cringey", de esos que te dan penita ajena.
Hubo momentos en que los personajes soltaban algo súper obvio como si fuera el descubrimiento del siglo, y eso, pues, me sacaba un poco de la onda, me rompía la magia.. su forma de escribir a veces puede sentirse un poco amateur, o como que le falta carnita, profundidad. Es como si la idea principal fuera potente, los cimientos de un buen thriller están ahí, pero la prosa, la forma de narrar y cómo hablaban los personajes, muchas veces se sentía demasiado simple.. a ratos sentía que estaba leyendo algo escrito para un público mucho más pequeño, más joven, solo por el vocabulario que usaban y cómo se daban las conversaciones.
Y esto, pues lógicamente, le pegó a cómo me cayeron los personajes.. como el diálogo seguido se sentía medio forzado o poco natural, pues los personajes como que no se sentían del todo bien armados o con motivaciones que de verdad te creyeras, cumplían su trabajo para que la trama avanzara, sí, pero nunca sentí una conexión así profunda con ellos, ni entendí realmente qué onda con su mundo interior más allá del puro drama del momento. ---  Created with Canva Pro. I'm normally one of those who get carried away easily, but the truth is that there were a lot of little things in the plot of One by One, especially when things got more intense and later, when I finished it and started to recap, that just didn't make sense to me, they didn't make much sense. I felt like certain events were there more for shock, for impact, than because they truly flowed naturally from the situation or from who the characters were. I found myself thinking many times: "Would they really do that?" or "How the hell did that work?" This leads me straight to the end and the big twist, which always creates quite a stir with McFadden's books. For me, this particular reveal felt... well, a little underwhelming and a bit convoluted, to be honest. I’ve heard that other books of hers have such clever twists and turns, but this one just didn’t feel quite as clever, so wow! A good thriller, in my humble opinion, leaves you with little breadcrumbs, subtle clues, so that when the reveal comes, you’re like “Aaaah, right!” and everything falls into place perfectly. With One by One, it felt more like the solution was just thrust at you at the end rather than something you could have worked out if you’d been paying close enough attention. I can totally see why opinions on this ending are so divided. So, who is One by One for? Look, if you're already a fan of Freida McFadden and you absolutely love her signature style of super-fast "popcorn thriller," the kind that makes you turn off your critical brain and devour it in an afternoon, then chances are you'll find something to your liking here... it's for readers who prioritize a plot with lots of twists and turns over deep characters or polished prose, and who don't mind if the logic is a little shaky, if you're fascinated by the idea of ​​an isolated group in the woods with a murderer among them, this book delivers on that premise, there's no doubt about it! For me, I give One by One a **2.5/5 stars**. The idea at the beginning was great and it definitely had me hooked, eager to find out who the anonymous narrator was and how all the chaos was going to end. It’s a super easy book to read, no one can deny that. However, the dialogue was sometimes embarrassing, the characters were a little flat, and those plot tricks that made you say “oh shit, this can’t be right!” along with an ending that didn’t quite convince me because it prevented it from shining brighter for me. Overall, it’s a passable “popcorn thriller,” you know? It does its job if you’re looking for something light to distract you, but if you’re looking for a more thoughtful, psychologically dense mystery, or one with an impeccable plot, this might not be for you. Bye! >Otra cosa que me hizo un poquito de ruido, y esto es súper importante en los thrillers, es eso de "creértela", la famosa suspensión de la incredulidad, yo normalmente soy de los que se dejan llevar fácil, pero la verdad es que hubo un montón de cositas en la trama de One by One, sobre todo cuando la cosa se ponía más intensa y ya después, cuando lo terminé y me puse a recapitular, que simplemente no me sonaban lógicas, no tenían mucho sentido, sentí que ciertos eventos estaban ahí más para el shock, para el impacto, que porque de verdad fluyeran naturalmente de la situación o de cómo eran los personajes. Me ví pensando muchas veces: "A ver, ¿en serio harían eso?" o "¿Y eso cómo fregados funcionó?".. esto me lleva derechito al final y al gran giro, que siempre arma un buen revuelo con los libros de McFadden.
Para mí, esta revelación en particular se sintió... pues, un poquito decepcionante y medio enredada, la verdad.. he oído que otros libros de ella tienen unos giros que te vuelan la cabeza de lo inteligentes que son, pero este como que no me pareció tan astuto, tan ¡wow! Un thriller de los buenos, en mi humilde opinión, te va dejando miguitas de pan, pistas sutiles, para que cuando llegue la revelación, digas "¡Aaaah, claro!" y veas cómo todo encaja perfecto.. con One by One, sentí más bien que la solución te la aventaron de golpe al final, en lugar de ser algo que podrías haber deducido si le hubieras puesto suficiente atención.. entiendo perfecto por qué las opiniones sobre este final están tan divididas.. Entonces, ¿para quién es One by One? Miren, si ya son fans de Freida McFadden y les mega encanta su estilo característico de "thriller palomero" súper rápido, de esos que desconectas el cerebro crítico y te lo devoras en una tarde, entonces chance y sí le encuentran el gusto aquí.. es para lectores que le dan más prioridad a una trama con muchas vueltas y enredos que a personajes profundos o una prosa muy pulida, y a los que no les importa tanto si la lógica se tambalea un poquito, si les fascina la idea de un grupo aislado en el bosque con un asesino entre ellos, este libro cumple con esa premisa, ¡de eso no hay duda!
Para mí, yo le doy un **2.5/5 estrellas** a One by One.. la idea del principio estaba genial y definitivamente me tuvo enganchado para descubrir quién era el narrador anónimo y cómo iba a terminar todo el caos, es un libro que te lees súper fácil, eso ni quién lo niegue.. sin embargo, el diálogo que a veces daba penita ajena, los personajes un poquito planos y esos trucos de la trama que te hacían decir "¡no manches, esto no puede ser!", junto con un final que no me terminó de convencer del todo, pues evitaron que brillara más para mí.. en general, es un "thriller palomero" que pasa, ¿saben? Cumple su función si buscas algo ligerito y que te distraiga, pero si andas buscando un misterio más pensado, psicológicamente más denso o con una trama impecable, este tal vez y no es el tuyo.. y bueno, esto es todo por hoy, cuidense mucho!
