Hello everyone, dear friends of Hive Book Club, I hope you're doing great, this time, I want to talk about a book that I finished a few weeks ago but had forgotten to review here, hoh I want to share my opinions of Powerless by Lauren Roberts, you've probably heard of it, it exploded on TikTok and it's always there, in front, in bookstores... the truth is, the hype is real, I mean, yes, it's understandable why all the fuss, a part of me was like 'I need to read it now!', but another part was like 'Mmm, ok, another YA fantasy... let's see what's up'.. on top of that, when I found out that the author wrote it when she was 18!... I mean, wow! That is really impressive and it already left me half crazy before opening the first page, now, when I started reading it... there were things that hooked me a lot, the thing is that we are in a fantasy kingdom, Isa, where there was a plague - it's funny to see how it has a similarity to COVID giving superpowers, haha! – and well, after that, people were divided: the 'Elites', who have powers, and the 'Ordinaries', who don't.. the King, well... basically wants to wipe the Ordinaries off the map, our protagonist, Peyton Gray, grew up in poverty, in a place called Loot Alley, and she is an Ordinary... but shhh!, she keeps it a secret.. the main plot is some 'purge trials' that they do every year, which sounded very much like The Hunger Games to me, honestly: people chosen to fight each other, obviously, they choose Peyton and she has to pretend she has powers to avoid dying in the attempt.. the whole thing of pretending to be a psychic, using pure teenage Sherlock Holmes level observation... that seemed really cool to me, super well thought out! The way it's written is easy to read, it flows well, you devour it really quickly, really, the book switches points of view, between Peyton and the boy she likes, Prince Kai... mind you, Kai is the King's future thug, I mean, his job is to hunt Ordinaries... so imagine the problem. I usually like having both points of view, getting into both of their heads, but here, at times, it felt kind of weird... like you were reading a conversation from Peyton's perspective, and boom!, right after it was told to you again from Kai's perspective... the truth is, it didn't always add anything new and it kind of slowed down the pace a bit. >Hola a todos, queridos amigos de Hive Book Club, espero que estén genial, en esta ocasión, les quiero hablar de un libro que termine hace algunas semanas pero que había olvidado reseñar por aquí, hoh les quiero compartir mis opiniones de Powerless de Lauren Roberts, seguro han oído hablar de el, explotó en TikTok y siempre está ahí, de frente, en las librerías.. la verdad, el hype es real, o sea, sí se entiende por qué tanto alboroto, una parte de mí estaba como '¡Necesito leerlo ya!', pero otra decía 'Mmm, ok, otra fantasía juvenil más... a ver qué onda'.. encima, cuando me enteré que la autora lo escribió ¡a los 18 años!... o sea, ¡wow!
Eso sí que es impresionante y ya me dejó medio loco antes de abrir la primera página, ahora, cuando empecé a leerlo... hubo cosas que me engancharon muchísimo, la onda es que estamos en un reino de fantasía, Isa, donde hubo una plaga – es gracioso ver cómo tiene similitud tipo el COVID dando superpoderes, ¡jaja! – y bueno, después de eso, la gente se dividió: los 'Élites', que tienen poderes, y los 'Ordinarios', que no.. el Rey, pues... básicamente quiere borrar del mapa a los Ordinarios, nuestra prota, Peyton Gray, creció en la pobreza, en un lugar llamado el Callejón del Botín, y es una Ordinaria... pero ¡shhh!, lo mantiene en secreto.. el rollo principal son unas 'pruebas de purga' que hacen cada año, que me sonaron full a Los Juegos del Hambre, la verdad: gente elegida para pelear entre ellos, obvio, eligen a Peyton y ella tiene que hacerse la que tiene poderes para no morir en el intento.. toda esa movida de hacerse pasar por psíquica, usando pura observación nivel Sherlock Holmes adolescente... ¡eso me pareció un puntazo, súper bien pensado!
La forma en que está escrito es fácil de leer, fluye bien, te lo devoras rapidísimo, de verdad, el libro cambia de punto de vista, entre Peyton y el chico que le gusta, el Príncipe Kai.. ojo, que Kai es el futuro matón del Rey, o sea, su trabajo es cazar Ordinarios... así que imagínense el problemón. A mí me suele gustar eso de tener los dos puntos de vista, meterte en la cabeza de ambos, pero acá, a veces, se sintió medio raro... como que leías una conversación desde Peyton, y ¡pum!, justo después te la contaban otra vez desde Kai.. la verdad, no siempre sumaba algo nuevo y como que frenaba un poco el ritmo. ---  Image generated with FLUX. Improved with KREA. --- Okay, let's talk about the characters. I really liked Peyton, the main character. She's one of those strong women who handles these themes well. I didn't feel like she said anything really new or different... but be careful, even though she sounds clever, nothing like the typical girl who needs rescuing, and that, ugh!, is really appreciated... it doesn't cheer her up, you want her to do well. And Kai... well, Kai is the typical 'morally grey' character, the bad boy, dangerous, but deep down... he has something, the very familiar everything. For me, the most redeeming thing was the romantic tension, really! The author builds that connection, that anguish, really well, without needing to get graphic or anything... it's a more... clean romance, let's say, focused on desire, on the forbidden, and that seemed refreshing to me compared to everything we see these days. There were moments that, yes, made me smile or felt that little thing for them, you know? And the vibe between them is pure 'enemies to lovers', full blast! If you like that kind of thing, you'll like it, but it leans too much on other books with a spark and that tension that you feel in the air... that push and pull between the two, if you've already read a lot of the genre, feels kind of predictable at times, the world it creates... also feels good, for me, the most redeeming, the strongest part of the book. Now, if we talk about the themes... it's like they're there to make the plot and the romance work, but I don't know how they're carried... mmm, it touches on things we've seen a thousand times in young adult books, right? The social divide, you immerse them deeply... and the villain, the King... also, kind of flat, the typical evil bad guy without prejudices, survival, forbidden love... this, honestly, is where I felt that the book didn't invent anything new. >Okay, hablemos de los personajes. Peyton, la prota, me cayó súper bien, es de esas fuertes maneja bien estos temas, no sentí que dijera algo realmente nuevo o diferente.. pero ojo, a pesar de que suena, astuta, nada de la típica chica que necesita que la rescaten, y eso, ¡uff!, se agradece un montón.. no la anima, quieres que le vaya bien. Y Kai... bueno, Kai es el típico personaje 'moralmente gris', el chico malo, peligroso, pero que en el fondo... algo tiene, el muy familiar todo, para mí lo más rescatable fue la tensión romántica, ¡de verdad! La autora construye súper bien esa conexión, esa angustia, sin necesidad de ponerse gráfica ni nada.. es un romance más... limpio, digamos, enfocado en el deseo, en lo prohibido, y eso me pareció hasta refrescante con todo lo que se ve ahora, hubo momentos que sí, me sacaron una sonrisa o me hicieron sentir esa cosita por ellos, ¿saben Y la onda entre ellos es puro 'enemies to lovers', ¡a full!
Si a ustedes les encanta ese rollo, les gustará, pero se apoya demasiado en otros libros con chispa y esa tensión que se siente en el aire.. ese tira y afloja entre los dos si ya has leído bastante del género, se siente medio predecible a ratos, el mundo que crea... también se siente bien, para mí, lo más rescatable, lo más fuerte del libro. Ahora, si hablamos de los temas.. como que está ahí para que funcione la trama y el romance, pero no te cómo están llevados... mmm, toca cosas que ya hemos visto mil veces en juvenil, ¿no? La división social, los sumerges a fondo.. y el villano, el Rey... también, medio plano, el típico malo malísimo sin prejuicios, sobrevivir, el amor prohibido... acá, sinceramente, es donde sentí que el libro como que no inventa nada nuevo. ---  Created with Canva Pro. Let's see, if you're just starting out with young adult fantasy or romance, this book could be a good entry point... it takes those themes we like, handles them well, and it's a breeze to read, super easy... if you loved The Hunger Games or The Red Queen and are looking for more of that vibe, that wave, especially the 'enemies to lovers' thing, you'll probably like it a lot. Buuuut... if you've been reading fantasy for a while, if you're looking for a complex, super-developed world and a story that makes you say 'Wow, how original!', maybe, and this one seems a bit repetitive to you, because it is, like you've read it before... I give it... mmm... a **3.5/5 stars**. It entertained me, yes, honestly, the romance, the story between them, is engaging, and the pace makes you not want to put the book down. Peyton, like I said, I liked her, she's a good protagonist... but the fact that it's so similar to other famous young adult books and that the world isn't that developed... makes it, for me, personally, not a wow book, you know? It's fun, eh!, especially if you like those well-done clichés, but it's not going to blow your mind with anything new... definitely, give it a look if all this I told you about the characters and the tension catches your attention, but don't go in expecting the most original thing in the world. A ver, si recién estás empezando con la fantasía juvenil o el romantasy, este libro puede ser una buena puerta de entrada.. agarra esos temas que nos gustan, los maneja bien y se lee volando, súper fácil.. si te encantaron Los Juegos del Hambre o La Reina Roja y andas buscando más de esa vibra, de esa onda, especialmente el rollo de 'enemigos a amantes', probablemente te va a gustar un montón. Peeero... si ya tienes tiempo leyendo fantasía, si buscas un mundo complejo, súper desarrollado y una historia que digas '¡Wow, qué original!', tal vez y este se te hace medio repetido, porque lo es, como que ya lo leíste antes.. yo le doy... mmm... un **3.5/5 estrellas.**
Me entretuvo, sí, la verdad, el romance, la historia entre ellos, engancha, y el ritmo hace que no quieras soltar el libro. Peyton, como dije, me cayó bien, es una buena prota.. pero eso de que se parezca tanto a otros libros juveniles famosos y que el mundo no esté taaan desarrollado... hace que, para mí, personalmente, no sea un libro ¡wow!, ¿entienden? Está divertido, ¡eh!, sobre todo si te gustan esos clichés bien hechos, pero no te va a volar la cabeza con algo nuevo.. definitivamente, denle una vistazo si les llama la atención todo esto que les conté de los personajes y la tensión, pero vayan sin esperar la cosa más original del mundo.
