Well, when I started reading "La Bestia" I confess that I was a bit curious and I didn't quite believe it, that it won the Planeta Prize... yes, it is prestigious, but we also know that sometimes there is a bit of a catch with those awards... all the gossip that was created, especially when it was discovered that Carmen Mola was not one person, but three writers together... that already prepares you to read something that feels like an event. All that controversy piqued my curiosity and left me wondering if the novel was really worth all the fuss. And since I started reading, I was captivated by the dark and heavy plot of Madrid in 1834. Imagine, a walled city in the middle of the Carlist war, where people are not only at war, but are also suffering from a cholera epidemic. That difference between the city centre, which seems more or less normal, and the destroyed outskirts, where people are in misery, adds a lot of tension to the whole thing... that setting immerses you in a place where every street and every shadow hides something, and that's what makes the novel so captivating. The story follows several characters who, each in their own way, give depth to this historical thriller. On one hand, we have Donoso, the policeman who investigates some horrible crimes that have the city shaking, a guy who carries the weight of his job and the moral problems of the time... there's also Diego, a journalist starving for news who risks himself searching for the truth, almost obsessed with finding out what's up with everything that's happening... but the one who really steals the show is Lucía: a girl of barely 14 years old who has to survive after her mother dies of cholera, and who goes out to look for her sister who disappeared. And to top it off, there appears Fray Braulio, a guerrilla monk who changes a lot during the story, and who gives it an extra touch of hope in the middle of so much bad stuff. >Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de la lectura, espero que hoy estén genial, en esta ocasión, quiero compartir con todos ustedes una nueva reseña con mis opiniones personales, y bueno cuando empecé a leer "La Bestia" confieso que iba con una mezcla de curiosidad y como que no me la creía del todo, eso de que se ganó el Premio Planeta.. que sí, es prestigioso, pero también sabemos que a veces hay cierta trampa con esos premios.. todo el chisme que se armó, sobre todo cuando se descubrió que Carmen Mola no era una persona, sino tres escritores juntos.. eso ya te prepara para leer algo que se siente como un evento, toda esa polémica me picó la curiosidad y me dejó pensando si la novela de verdad valía todo el alboroto. Y desde que empecé a leer, me atrapó la trama oscura y pesada del Madrid de 1834, imagínense, una ciudad amurallada en plena guerra carlista, donde la gente no solo está en guerra, sino que también les cae encima una epidemia de cólera, esa diferencia entre el centro de la ciudad que parece más o menos normal y las afueras destruidas donde la gente está en la miseria, le da un montón de tensión a la cosa.. esa ambientación te mete de cabeza en un lugar donde cada calle y cada sombra esconden algo, y eso es lo que hace que la novela te enganche tanto.
La historia sigue a varios personajes que, cada uno a su manera, le dan profundidad a este thriller histórico, por un lado, tenemos a Donoso, el policia que investiga unos crímenes horribles que tienen a la ciudad temblando, un tipo que carga con el peso de su trabajo y los problemas morales de la época.. también está Diego, un periodista muerto de hambre de noticias que se arriesga buscando la verdad, casi obsesionado con descubrir qué onda con todo lo que está pasando.. pero la que de verdad se roba el show es Lucía: una chica de apenas 14 años que tiene que sobrevivir después de que su mamá muere de cólera, y que sale a buscar a su hermana que desapareció. Y para rematar, aparece Fray Braulio, un monje guerrillero que cambia un montón durante la historia, y que le da un toque extra de esperanza en medio de tanta cosa mala. ---  Image generated with FLUX. Improved with KREA. --- One of the things I liked most about this book is how it is written, the prose is super agile, it hooks you from the first second and it is full of scenes that leave you with your eyes open: sex, violence, revelations that blow your mind... it was impossible for me to put the book down, even in the early hours of the morning, the authors achieved something incredible, they mixed the story with a thriller rhythm that keeps you hooked, so the reading flows like water, without you getting bored for a second. And I found it super interesting how they describe Madrid, they paint a decadent, divided city, where you see the brutal difference between the rich people in the center and the poor people on the outskirts... that wave of contrasts is the best thing about the book, every corner of the city feels like another character, I swear you feel like you are walking through those cobblestone streets, feeling the weight of history on your shoulders. But this book also has its complicated side, they present us with a very harsh criticism of those who are at the top, of the people with power. The novel shows you the inequality, the abandonment suffered by the poorest, and how the government washes its hands of the suffering of the people, and that social criticism really gets to you, especially now that we are living through different crises, it makes you think about how those at the top sometimes don't care what happens to the ordinary people, and how that makes those who have less suffer more... but not everything is rosy, we're not going to exaggerate either, this novel has its little things that could be better... characters like Lucía and Fray Braulio are very well done, but others seem flat, or sometimes you don't quite believe them, there were times when I thought that some parts of the story could have gone deeper, because some decisions or changes made by some characters didn't fit much with me, like they didn't make sense... the ending, although it has action and surprises you, seemed a bit fast to me after all the detail they had put before... it seems like some things were left a bit loose and I was left wanting more. > Una de las cosas que más me gustaron de este libro es cómo está escrita, la prosa es súper ágil, te engancha desde el segundo uno y está llena de escenas que te dejan con los ojos abiertos: sexo, violencia, revelaciones que te vuelan la cabeza.. se me hizo imposible soltar el libro, aunque sean las tantas de la madrugada, los autores lograron algo increíble, mezclaron la historia con un ritmo de thriller que te mantiene atrapado, así que la lectura fluye como agua, sin que te aburras ni un segundo. Y me pareció súper interesante como describen Madrid, te pintan una ciudad decadente, dividida, donde ves la diferencia brutal entre la gente rica del centro y los pobres de las afueras.. esa onda de contrastes es de lo mejor del libro, cada esquina de la ciudad se siente como un personaje más, te juro que sientes que estás caminando por esas calles empedradas, sintiendo el peso de la historia en tus hombros. Pero este libro también tiene su lado complicado, nos presentan una crítica durísima a los que están arriba, a la gente con poder.
La novela te muestra la desigualdad, el abandono que sufren los más pobres, y cómo el gobierno se lava las manos frente al sufrimiento de la gente, y justo esa crítica social te llega, sobre todo ahora que estamos viviendo diferentes crisis, te hace pensar en cómo a los de arriba a veces les da igual lo que le pasa a la gente de a pie, y cómo eso hace que los que menos tienen sufran más.. pero no todo es color de rosa, tampoco vamos a exagerar, esta novela, tiene sus cositas que podrían ser mejores.. personajes como Lucía y Fray Braulio están muy bien hechos, pero otros como que se quedan planos, o a veces no te los crees del todo, hubo momentos en que pensé que algunas partes de la historia podían haber ido más profundo, porque algunas decisiones o cambios de algunos personajes no me cuadraban mucho, como que no tenían sentído.. el final, aunque tiene acción y te sorprende, me pareció un poco rápido después de todo el detalle que habían puesto antes.. como que quedaron algunas cosas medio sueltas y me quedé con ganas de más. ---  Created with Canva Pro. "La Bestiat" delivers what it promises: it entertains and makes you think in equal parts, it is a story that immerses you in a Madrid that is brutal but at the same time fascinates you, and it shows you the inequalities and injustices of a society that is in total crisis... although some characters are not so developed and the ending goes a bit fast, the novel is still a thriller that grabs you from the first page to the last... so, my final verdict is a solid 4/5 stars, it is a novel that, despite not being perfect, manages to mix entertainment, social reflection and a historical setting so well done that you feel as if you were there, in that time... if you are looking for a book that hooks you and makes you think, here it is for you. Además, que el Premio Planeta, que a veces le dan flores por ser muy comercial, haya premiado este libro, le da un toque interesante al debate de si es mejor la calidad literaria o que un libro le guste a mucha gente, ¿me entienden?
"La Bestia" cumple lo que promete: te entretiene y te hace pensar a partes iguales, es una historia que te mete de lleno en un Madrid que es brutal pero a la vez te fascina, y te muestra las desigualdades y las injusticias de una sociedad que está en crisis total.. aunque algunos personajes no estén tan desarrollados y el final vaya un poco rápido, la novela sigue siendo un thriller que te atrapa desde la primera página hasta la última.. así que, mi veredicto final se lleva unas sólidas 4/5 estrellas, es una novela que, a pesar de que no es perfecta, logra mezclar entretenimiento, reflexión social y una ambientación histórica tan bien hecha que te sientes como si estuvieras ahí, en esa época.. si buscas un libro que te enganche y te haga pensar, aquí está para tí.
