Hello everyone, my friends who are fans of good stories, this time I want to talk to you about the book: The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart because this book blew my mind, from the moment I picked it up, I had this feeling, I knew it would be great, it’s one of those books that gets under your skin… I finished it a little while ago and I’m still here, going over every detail in my head, the characters who are crazy. This is the first in a saga called, take note, The Sunken Empire, and I swear, you’re going to be BEGGING for the next one… to start with, the world this woman creates… wow! It’s crazy, spectacular stuff, just imagine this: an empire of islands that FLOATS, that move all the time and that, as the name of the saga says, sometimes boom!, sink or disappear into the sea… that in itself creates a tension, an urgency in the story that has you on the edge of your seat… the coolest thing is that Stewart gives this fantasy world a super East Asian vibe, which, honestly, is really appreciated after so much medieval European setting. It’s a place full of life, extremely dangerous, but it draws you in… then, hold on! there’s the magic system: Bone Shard Magic, look, seriously, it’s one of the most original and thought-provoking magics I’ve seen in YEARS, I mean, it’s about using bones, not just from dead animals, but –and this is where things get murky– tiny pieces of human skulls. Yes, you heard right! There's even a super crazy ritual they perform on children to remove these splinters. With these fragments, they record orders and use them to animate these creatures called Constructs, which are like beings made from animal parts that obey those orders... they describe it as intelligent magic, difficult to use, but also one that you can play with and experiment with a lot. But, be careful! It's also extremely dark and it really creeps you out when you start to think about everything it entails, especially because using these bone splinters slowly weakens the person they were taken from, and many times they don't even realize it! It's brilliant and terrifying at the same time, and it raises a ton of ethical questions that the book doesn't avoid at all. >Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de las buenas historias, en esta ocasión, les quiero hablar del libro: The Bone Shard Daughter de Andrea Stewart porque, este libro me voló la cabeza, desde que lo agarré, tuve ese presentimiento, supe que sería genial, es de esos libros que se te meten en la piel.. lo terminé hace poquito y sigo acá, dándole vueltas en la cabeza a cada detalle, a los personajes que son una locura. Este es el primero de una saga que se llama, anoten bien, El Imperio Sumergido, y les juro, van a quedar ROGANDO por el que sigue.. para arrancar, el mundo que crea esta mujer... ¡wow! Es una cosa de locos, espectacular, imagínense esto: un imperio de islas que FLOTAN, que se mueven todo el tiempo y que, como dice el nombre de la saga, a veces ¡pum!, se hunden o desaparecen en el mar.. eso ya de por sí te mete una tensión, una urgencia en la historia que te tiene al borde del asiento.. lo más chévere es que Stewart le mete a este mundo de fantasía una onda súper asiática oriental, que, la verdad, se agradece un montón después de tanto escenario medieval europeo.
Es un lugar lleno de vida, peligrosísimo, pero que te atrapa.. después, ¡agárrense!, está el sistema de magia: la Magia de Esquirlas de Hueso, miren, en serio, es de las magias más originales y que más te dejan pensando que he visto en AÑOS, o sea, se trata de usar huesos, no solo de animales muertos, sino –y acá es donde se pone turbio el asunto– pedacitos chiquititos de cráneos humanos. ¡Sí, como oyen! Hasta hay un ritual súper loco que les hacen a los niños para sacarles estas esquirlas, con esos fragmentos, les graban órdenes y los usan para animar unos bichos llamados Constructos, que son como seres hechos con partes de animales que obedecen esas órdenes.. la describen como una magia inteligente, jodida de usar, pero también con la que se puede jugar y experimentar bastante. Pero, ¡ojo!, también es oscurísima y te da un miedito cuando te pones a pensar en todo lo que implica, sobre todo porque usar estas esquirlas de hueso va debilitando de a poquito a la persona de la que las sacaron, y muchas veces ¡ni se enteran! Es brillante y terrorífico al mismo tiempo, y te planta un montón de preguntas éticas que el libro no esquiva para nada.. ---  Image generated with FLUX. Improved with KREA. --- Well, the thing is that the story is told to you by several characters, I think there are like five that we are following, and Stewart, a genius!, handles it barbarically... the protagonist, or one of the main characters, is Lin, the emperor's daughter. This girl lives half isolated, trying to remember things after an illness and she is desperate to learn this magic of the splinters so that the old man, who is a cold and very demanding guy, pays attention to her. Her story catches you, how she puts together her past and what awaits her. Then there's Jovis, a smuggler who is on a sad mission for years, looking for his wife who disappeared, almost without wanting to, he ends up becoming a hero for a rebellion that is being born there, and his part of the story is crazy, plus, he has a little animal that accompanies him, Meffy, who is great, she has a personality that will make you die of laughter! We also meet other important characters like Feylu, who is the daughter of a governor, and her girlfriend, Ranami. Ranami is much more critical of the empire and all the injustices, and that adds a tension and depth to their relationship that is really good. Speaking of their relationship, one thing that I LOVED with all my being is how they show queer characters and relationships. Feylu and Ranami are a couple, a central couple, and their relationship is... normal, you know? It's totally accepted in this society; it's not like they have to fight to be accepted for who they are, and that was a relief to see it. It lets their characters and their problems revolve around other things, like their different ways of seeing the empire. There's also Sand, a super mysterious character who starts on a lost island, also with themes of memory, and her chapters add another wave of intrigue to everything. Andrea Stewart's writing style is simply beautiful: it's thoughtful, you can tell she's knowledgeable, and it flows in a way that hooks you immediately... it really doesn't feel like it's her first book; the pace is quite fast, and she handles a dense, complicated plot with a skill that makes you say 'wow.' And what I liked most is that, although the book touches on some pretty dark topics, like removing bone splinters from children, the overall tone feels very accessible, more so for a wide audience. It's intense, yes, but it doesn't really wallow in the ugly for the sake of it. >Bueno, la onda es que la historia te la cuentan desde varios personajes, creo que son como cinco a los que vamos siguiendo, y la Stewart, ¡una genia!, lo maneja bárbaro.. la prota, o una de las principales, es Lin, la hija del emperador.. está chica vive medio aislada, tratando de acordarse de cosas después de una enfermedad y está desesperada por aprender la magia esta de las esquirlas para que el viejo, que es un tipo frío y re exigente, le preste atención.. su historia te atrapa, cómo va armando su pasado y lo que le espera.. después está Jovis, un contrabandista que anda en una misión triste hace años, buscando a su esposa que desapareció, casi sin querer, se termina convirtiendo en un héroe para una rebelión que está naciendo ahí, y su parte de la historia es loquisima, además, tiene un animalito que lo acompaña, Meffy, que es genial, ¡tiene una personalidad que te morís de risa!
También conocemos a otros personajes importantes como Feylu, que es hija de un gobernador, y su novia, Ranami, Ranami es mucho más crítica con el imperio y todas las injusticias, y eso le mete una tensión y una profundidad a la relación de ellas que está muy buena.. hablando de la relación de ellas, una cosa que AMÉ con todo mi ser es cómo muestran a los personajes y las relaciones queer. Feylu y Ranami son pareja, una pareja central, y su relación es... normal, ¿entienden? Está totalmente aceptado en esta sociedad; no es que tengan que andar luchando para que las acepten por ser quienes son, y eso fue, un alivio verlo.. deja que sus personajes y sus problemas giren en torno a otras cosas, como sus distintas formas de ver el imperio.. también está Sand, un personaje súper misterioso que arranca en una isla perdida, también con temas de memoria, y sus capítulos le suman otra onda de intriga a todo.
La forma de escribir de Andrea Stewart es, sencillamente, hermosa: es prolija, se nota que sabe, y fluye de una manera que te engancha al toque.. de verdad que no parece que fuera su primer libro, el ritmo va bastante rápido y maneja una trama que es densa y complicada con una habilidad que decís ‘wow’. Y lo que más me gustó es que, aunque el libro toca temas que son bien oscuros, eh, como eso de sacarles las esquirlas de hueso a los niños, el tono general se siente muy accesible, más para un público amplio, es intenso, sí, pero no es que se regodee en lo feo porque sí. ---  Created with Canva Pro. If there was something that was a bit hard to get the hang of at first, it was probably the change in how the story is told, with Lin and Jovis it’s in first person and with the others it’s in third person… but, what do I know! You get used to it soon enough and it didn’t ruin the experience for me at all. This book, people, is the beginning of a saga, and the ending, wow haha, it brings some things to a close, yes, but it leaves you with a TON of questions that are burning in your head and mysteries everywhere, obviously it leaves you with a TREMENDOUS desire to read the next one! So, who could like this book? Look, if you're a fan of super unique and well-crafted magic systems, of that fantasy that hooks you with the characters, and of worlds that are inspired by cultures that aren't the typical European ones, you have to read it YES OR YES, it's a fantastic and super fresh proposal for the genre. Bye! >Miren, si tengo que elegir algo que posta me voló la cabeza, fue lo ¡originalísimo! del sistema de magia y cómo está metido HASTA EL FONDO en la sociedad y en toda la trama.. y ni hablar de la onda entre Jovis y Meffy, amo los buenos compañeros animales, gente! Si hubo algo que al principio me costó un toque agarrarle la mano, fue capaz el cambio de cómo te cuentan la historia, que con Lin y Jovis es en primera persona y con los otros en tercera.. pero, ¡qué sé yo!, al toque te acostumbrás y no me arruinó para nada la experiencia, este libro, gente, es el comienzo de una saga, y el final, wow jaja, te cierra algunas cositas, sí, pero te deja con un MONTÓN de preguntas que te queman la cabeza y misterios por todos lados, ¡obvio que te deja con unas ganas TREMENDAS de leer el que sigue!
Entonces, ¿a quién le puede gustar este libro? Miren, si son fans de los sistemas de magia súper únicos y bien armados, de esa fantasía que te engancha por los personajes, y de mundos que se inspiran en culturas que no son la típica europea, lo tienen que leer SÍ O SÍ, es una propuesta fantástica y recontra fresca para el género. Para mí, The Bone Shard Daughter es un **5/5 estrellas**, es creativo, te llega al corazón y es, una clase maestra de cómo contar una buena historia.. y bueno, esto es todo por hoy, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense mucho!
