I'm going to talk about a book I recently finished, The Graham Effect by Elle Kennedy. Let's see, I'll be super honest: I knew, before starting it, that this book kind of kicks off a new series, of the 'next generation', that the main character, Gigi, is the daughter of some apparently iconic characters – Garrett Graham and Hannah, I think that's what they're called – from Elle Kennedy's original series, Off-Campus. But here's the thing: I haven't read the original books... honestly, I was kind of worried that maybe I was going to miss things or not understand the references, the inside jokes... and yes, look, Gigi's dad appears a lot and obviously he's super important in her life, but the truth? I didn't feel lost at all, Elle Kennedy does a great job making this story feel independent, very focused on Gigi and what happens to her... this book throws you right into the college romance with sports, specifically hockey, which is the area where this author is good, on one hand there's Gigi, who is a strong, super determined girl, she also plays hockey and is looking for ways to get noticed. And on the other hand, we have Ryder, your typical rival hockey player, kind of grumpy, from another university... and to top it all off, his team has to merge with Gigi's, so imagine the tension from minute one... what I loved is that they are both super serious athletes, it's not just that the boy is the star... well, things get interesting when they make a deal, it turns out that Gigi needs help with some hockey techniques to have a chance of making the national team, and Ryder... well, Ryder needs to be liked or connect with Gigi's dad (who is a hockey legend and seems to be quite intimidating) for some reasons of his own. You can see where this is going, right? It's the classic 'ok, we'll help each other, but no sentimental stuff', we all know how that ends… >Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de la lectura, espero que hoy estén todos bien, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les hablaré de un libro que termine hace poco, se trata de: The Graham Effect de Elle Kennedy. A ver, les soy súper sincero: yo sabía, antes de empezarlo, que este libro como que arranca una nueva serie, de la 'siguiente generación', que la prota, Gigi, es hija de unos personajes que aparentemente son icónicos – Garrett Graham y Hannah, creo que se llaman así – de la serie original de Elle Kennedy, Off-Campus, pero aquí viene el detalle: yo no me he leído los libros originales.. la verdad, sí estaba medio preocupado de que a lo mejor me iba a perder de cosas o no iba a entender las referencias, los chistes internos... y sí, miren, el papá de Gigi sale un montón y obvio es súper importante en la vida de ella, pero ¿la verdad? para nada me sentí perdida, Elle Kennedy lo hace genial haciendo que esta historia se sienta independiente, bien centrada en Gigi y en lo que le pasa a ella.. este libro te mete de cabeza en el rollo del romance universitario con deporte, específicamente hockey, que es como el terreno donde esta autora es buena, por un lado está Gigi, que es una tipa fuerte, súper decidida, también juega hockey y anda buscando cómo hacerse notar.
Y por el otro, tenemos a Ryder, el típico jugador de hockey rival, medio gruñón, de otra universidad... y para colmo, su equipo se tiene que fusionar con el de Gigi, así que imagínense la tensión desde el minuto uno.. lo que me encantó es que los dos son atletas súper serios, no es solo que el chico sea la estrella.. bueno, la cosa se pone interesante cuando hacen un trato, resulta que Gigi necesita que la ayuden con unas técnicas de hockey para tener chance de entrar al equipo nacional, y Ryder... bueno, Ryder necesita caerle bien o conectar con el papá de Gigi (que es una leyenda del hockey y parece que intimida bastante) por unas razones suyas. ¿Ya van viendo por dónde va la cosa, no? Es el clásico 'ok, nos ayudamos, pero cero cosas sentimentales', que todos sabemos cómo termina… ---  Image generated with FLUX. Improved with KREA. --- And look, how the relationship between them develops I really liked, it's definitely one of those that cooks over low heat, and the teasing, the innuendos that Gigi and Ryder throw at each other... are next level, the best! I'm telling you seriously, some of the best dialogues like that, the back and forth, that I've read in a long time, I mean, super witty, sharp, and they really make you laugh, haha, the tension between them... you can feel it almost from the moment they meet, it has that enemies to lovers vibe, although maybe it's more like intense rivals who end up together, obviously, the dynamic of the grumpy guy with the cool girl - Ryder is the god-level grumpy, and Gigi is like impulsive but more sparky, more light. And everything flows super naturally, from that half-fake deal they make, they become like friends with benefits, until boom! Things get really serious. Honestly, it was super fun to see how they tried to keep their agreement while it was obvious they were fighting against their feelings for each other... and okay, now we have to talk about the size. This book is a big book! Almost 500 pages... which for a college romance, well, it's quite a lot, honestly. I did see somewhere on the internet that some people found it to be eternal... But you know what? For me, it didn't feel long at all... I was so wrapped up in Gigi and Ryder's lives – because they both have their own problems, their goals, their arguments beyond the relationship – that the pages literally flew by... in fact, I was even grateful that the book wasn't just a romance, you know? We see Gigi pushing herself to fulfill her hockey dream, handling the pressure of coming from such a famous family in that world, and Ryder also has his own complicated backstory and ambitions, which made them feel real, like real people... and mind you, there are also a ton of secondary characters. I mean, we have several hockey teams (Gigi's, Ryder's old one, the new one that merged), and also family, friends... some of whom, I imagine, are the children of characters from the original series, and look, again, I completely understand that for some this might seem like a lot, like, bam!, they throw a lot of people at you, but for me, honestly, it worked out really well. It made the world feel alive and full of people, and it gives you that real found family feeling, especially with teammates and cousins, and surprisingly, I had no trouble keeping track of who was who, and I really enjoyed the little stories that were going on and how everyone interacted... it felt like a really lively, real college community. >Y miren, cómo se va desarrollando la relación entre ellos me gustó mucho, definitivamente es de esas que se cocinan a fuego lento, y el pique, las indirectas que se tiran Gigi y Ryder... ¡son otro nivel, de lo mejor! Se los digo en serio, de los mejores diálogos así, de tira y afloja, que he leído en mucho tiempo, o sea, súper ocurrentes, filosos, y de verdad te sacan la risa, jaja, la tensión entre ellos.. se siente casi desde que se conocen, tiene esa vibra de enemies to lovers, aunque quizá es más como de rivales intensos que terminan juntos, obvio, la dinámica del gruñón con la chica buena onda – Ryder es el gruñón nivel dios, y Gigi es así como impulsiva pero más chispa, más luz.
Y todo va fluyendo súper natural, desde el trato ese medio falso que hacen, pasan a ser como amigos con derechos, hasta que ¡pum!, la cosa se pone seria de verdad, la verdad, fue súper divertido ver cómo intentaban mantener su acuerdo mientras era obvio que estaban peleando contra lo que sentían el uno por el otro.. y okey, ahora, tenemos que hablar del tamaño. ¡Este libro es un señor libro! Casi 500 páginas.. que para un romance universitario, pues sí es bastante, la verdad, sí vi por ahí en internet que a alguna gente se le hizo eterno.. ¿Pero saben qué? A mí, no se me hizo largo para nada.. estaba tan metido, en la vida de Gigi y de Ryder – porque los dos tienen sus propios problemas, sus metas, sus broncas más allá de la relación– que las páginas se me fueron volando, literal.. es más, hasta agradecí que el libro no fuera solo romance, ¿saben?
Vemos a Gigi echándole ganas para cumplir su sueño en el hockey, aguantando la presión de venir de una familia tan famosa en ese mundo, y Ryder también tiene su historia complicada y sus propias ambiciones, eso hizo que se sintieran reales, como personas de carne y hueso.. y ojo, que también hay un montón de personajes secundarios. O sea, tenemos varios equipos de hockey (el de Gigi, el antiguo de Ryder, el nuevo que se fusionó), y además la familia, los amigos... algunos que, me imagino, son los hijos de los personajes de la serie original, y miren, de nuevo, entiendo perfecto que para algunos esto pueda parecer mucho, como que ¡pum!, te lanzan un montón de gente, pero a mí, la verdad, me funcionó súper bien. Hizo que el mundo se sintiera vivo, lleno de gente, y te da esa sensación real de 'familia encontrada', especialmente entre los compañeros de equipo y los primos, y sorpresivamente, no me costó nada seguirle el hilo a quién era quién, y de verdad disfruté mucho las historias chiquitas que pasaban alrededor y cómo interactuaban todos.. se sintió como una comunidad universitaria súper viva, muy real. ---  Created with Canva Pro. I mean, they describe in great detail the training, the games, the strategy, if you read sports romance just for the romance and you kind of 'put up' with the sports part, maybe this will be boring for you, but if you really like sports, like me, wow!, you're going to love how it's embedded in the story, how it's super important for everything that happens and for the characters... well, my reaction, how this book hit me... honestly, I was super deep into it while I was reading it... I stayed up terribly late, I woke up thinking about the book, I would sneak chapters in during my lunch break... I mean, I couldn't put it down! When I finished it, I swear I was kind of hooked, like... I wanted to know more about them, you know that feeling when you barely close the book and you already want to read it again? Well, that almost never happens to me, and here it did, and so, my rating would be a good **4.5/5**... maybe, just maybe, there were moments where I felt that the pace dropped a little, as if it dragged on because of having so many characters and so many things going on, but the truth is, it's a minimal detail compared to how much, much I enjoyed it... let's see, who do I recommend it to? If you're a fan of Elle Kennedy, if you love college or sports romance, you have to read it, yes or yes! If you're fascinated by great dialogues, the kind that hook you in, stories that cook slowly but are worth it, the dynamic of the grumpy guy with the nice girl, and characters who have their own very clear goals, here you will feel super good... and well, that's all for today, take care of yourselves! Bye bye! >Ahora, otra cosa es que este libro está súper metido en el hockey.. o sea, te describen con lujo de detalle los entrenamientos, los partidos, la estrategia, si ustedes leen romance deportivo nomás por el romance y como que 'aguantan' la parte del deporte, talvez y esto se les haga pesado, pero si de verdad les gusta lo deportivo, como a mí, ¡uf!, les va a encantar cómo está metido en la historia, cómo es súper importante para todo lo que pasa y para los personajes.. bueno, mi reacción, cómo me pegó este libro... de verdad, estaba súper adentro mientras lo leía.. me desvelé horrible, me despertaba pensando en el libro, me echaba capítulos a escondidas en mi hora de comida... o sea, ¡no lo podía soltar! Cuando lo terminé, les juro que me quedé medio picado, así como... quería saber más de ellos, saben esa sensación de que apenas lo cierras y ya lo quieres volver a leer
Bueno, eso casi nunca me pasa, y aquí me pasó, y entonces, mi calificación sería un buen **4.5/5**.. quizá, solo quizá, hubo momentitos donde sentí que el ritmo bajaba un poquito, como que se alargaba al tener tantos personajes y tantas cositas pasando, pero la verdad, es un detallito mínimo comparado con lo mucho, mucho que lo disfruté.. a ver, ¿a quién se lo recomiendo? Si son fans de Elle Kennedy, si les encanta el romance universitario o el deportivo, tienen que leerlo, sí o sí! Si les fascinan los diálogos geniales, de esos que te enganchan, las historias que se van cocinando lento pero que valen la pena, la dinámica del gruñón con la chica buena onda, y personajes que tienen sus propias metas bien claras, aquí te sentirás super bien..y bueno, esto es todo por hoy, cuidense mucho!
