Hello everyone, friends who are fans of good stories, dear Hive Book Club community, I hope you are doing super well today, this time I will share with you my opinions of this interesting book, today we will talk about: The Mask of Mirrors by M.A. Carrick... it is a book that I read a few months ago, but I needed to tell you a little about this story, to start, something that surprised me is that M.A. Carrick is actually TWO authors! Marie Brennan, who you surely know from the memoirs of Lady Trent and Alyc Helms... I am always impressed with how they manage to write together and make it look so good, and here, they made a super well-rounded gem full of details... my first impression was like: "Wow, that's a lot of pages", because yes, it is long, but the whole con thing caught me right away, I'm not lying!
The thing is about Ren, a chick who is a total master of deception, she returns to the city of Nadezra with a great plan: to pretend to be the long-lost daughter of a high-society family and, obviously, secure the future for herself and Tess, who is like her soul sister, her partner in deception... And Tess is a genius at sewing, and the dresses she makes are KEY for Ren to be able to keep up this whole charade, this whole "big deception" thing is the heart of the story, and seeing Ren move among so many people with complicated codes is... ugh, crazy fascinating!
You know all her tricks, but you're still there, biting your nails, hoping they don't catch her... but what really makes Nadezra come to life is the world they created... it gave me a very Venice vibe, you know? With canals everywhere and social rules that I can't even tell you about, the authors describe everything in such detail... ugh! From the super-luxurious, almost over-the-top mansions of the rich, to the most extreme poverty in other neighborhoods... that contrast is super well done... and not to mention the clothes, everyone! If you're one of those who likes to be told in great detail about the costumes and how they show who's who and what each character looks like, all of this really gets you into the swing of things; it's super immersive!
>Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de las buenas historias, querida comunidad de Hive Book Club, espero que estén super bien el día de hoy, en esta ocasión les compartire mis opiniones de esta interesante libro, hoy hablaremos de: The Mask of Mirrors de M.A. Carrick.. es un libro que leí hace unos meses, pero necesitaba contarles un poco de esta historia, para arrancar, algo que me sorprendió es que M.A. Carrick son en realidad ¡DOS autoras! Marie Brennan, que seguro la ubican por las memorias de Lady Trent y Alyc Helms.. yo siempre quedo impresionado con cómo logran escribir juntas y que quede tan bien, y aca, hicieron una joyita súper redonda y llena de detalles.. mi primera impresión fue como: "Upa, estas son muchas páginas", porque sí, es larguito, pero la onda de la gran estafa me atrapó al toque, ¡no les miento!
La cosa va de Ren, una tipa que es unamaestra total del engaño, ella vuelve a la ciudad de Nadezra con un planazo: hacerse pasar por la hija perdida de una familia de la alta sociedad y, obvio, asegurarse el futuro para ella y Tess, que es como su hermana del alma, su compañera de engaños.. Y Tess, es una genia cosiendo, y los vestidos que hace son CLAVE para que Ren pueda mantener toda esta farsa, toda esta movida del "gran engaño" es el corazón de la historia, y ver a Ren moverse entre tanta gente con códigos complicados es... ¡uf, una locura fascinante!
Uno sabe todos sus trucos, pero igual estás ahí, comiéndote las uñas, esperando que no la pesquen.. pero lo que de verdad hace que Nadezra cobre vida es el mundo que crearon.. me dio una onda muy Venecia, ¿saben? Con canales por todos lados y unas reglas sociales que ni les cuento, las autoras te describen todo con un detalle... ¡uff! Desde las mansiones súper lujosas, casi pasadas de rosca, de los ricachones, hasta la pobreza más heavy en otros barrios.. ese contraste, está súper bien hecho.. y ni hablar de la ropa, gente! Si son de los que les copa que les cuenten con lujo de detalles los trajes y cómo muestran quién es quién y cómo es cada personaje, todo esto te mete de lleno en la onda, ¡es súper inmersivo! ---  Image generated with FLUX. Improved with KREA. --- The characters are amazing haha, Ren is a genius: smart, she knows it all, but she also has a heart, the good thing is that they show you the story from different characters, I liked that, because as a reader, you understand more things than they do separately, like putting together the puzzle... for a story with so much mystery... Tess is great, and the relationship between them is... the grounding wire, fundamental! Each character has their own thing, they are well armed, with their own problems and kept secrets... speaking of the world, they included super chill queer representation, as part of the vibe of the place, it's not that it's THE theme of the story, it just IS. I like it that way, yes! It makes everything feel more real... now, this book is a cocktail of genres, a delight! You've got the whole political theme, well tangled and with its twists and turns... there's mystery, not only with Ren's deception, but with other shady things that happen in the city, deception is everywhere, they even throw in a little bit of romance, some action scenes that will make your hair stand on end, and moments of pure suspense that even give you a touch of terror. This mix makes it sure to be liked by a lot of people, which is great, yes, it is a long book, eh, we're talking more than 600 pages, a good brick! The first half is more about laying the cards on the table, they introduce you to all the characters, how Nadezra society works, the whole plot... at times I thought "and this is going to?", but it's good that I kept reading, because in the second half everything starts to fit together and a lot of those doubts from the beginning are answered. The way it's written catches you; There were a ton of unexpected twists and turns that kept me glued to the book! Especially when things got more intense. Something curious is how the fantasy, the magic itself, kind of increases in volume towards the end. It starts out more like a political thriller with fantastical touches, and then, boom! That fantasy takes center stage and leaves you speechless, with epic moments... it's a subtle change, but it leaves you wanting to know more. >Los personajes son increíbles jaja, Ren es una genia: inteligente, se las sabe todas, pero también tiene su corazoncito, lo bueno es que te van mostrando la historia desde distintos personajes, eso me gustó, porque así como lector, vas entendiendo más cositas que ellos por separado, como armando el rompecabezas.. para una historia con tanto misterio.. Tess es genial, y la relación entre ellas es... ¡el cable a tierra, fundamental! Cada personaje tiene lo suyo, están bien armaditos, con sus propios problemas y secretos guardados.. hablando del mundo, metieron representación queer súper tranqui, como parte de la onda del lugar, no es que sea EL tema de la historia, sino que simplemente ES. Así me gusta, ¡así sí! Hace que todo se sienta más de verdad.. ahora, este libro es un cóctel de géneros, ¡una delicia!
Tienes todo el tema de la política, bien enredado y con sus vueltas.. hay misterio, no solo con el engaño de Ren, sino con otras cosas turbias que pasan en la ciudad, el engaño está por todos lados, hasta te meten un poquito de romance, unas escenas de acción que te ponen los pelos de punta, y momentos de puro suspenso que, hasta te dan un toque de terror. Esta mezcla hace que seguro le guste a un montón de gente, lo cual está buenísimo, eso sí, es un libro largo, eh, estamos hablando de más de 600 páginas, ¡un buen ladrillo!
La primera mitad es más de poner las cartas sobre la mesa, te presentan a todos los personajes, cómo funciona la sociedad de Nadezra, todo el entramado.. por momentos pensaba "¿y esto pa' dónde va?", pero qué bueno que lo seguí leyendo, porque en la segunda mitad todo empieza a encajar y te responden un montón de esas dudas del principio. La forma en que está escrito te atrapa; hubo un montón de vueltas de tuerca que no me esperaba y que me tuvieron ahí, ¡pegado al libro!, especialmente cuando la cosa se ponía más intensa, algo curioso es cómo la fantasía, la magia en sí, como que va subiendo el volumen hacia el final. Arranca más como un thriller político con toques fantásticos, y después, ¡pum!, esa fantasía se vuelve re protagonista y te deja con la boca abierta, con momentos épicos.. es un cambio sutil, pero te deja queriendo saber más. --- Created with Canva Pro. Look, if you like fantasy worlds where you immerse yourself, with political entanglements that blow your mind, believable characters who pull off some high-flying scams, and a story that isn't afraid to mix genres, then buy it right away, without hesitation. Those who follow authors like V.E. Schwab or even Scott Lynch will surely find a lot of things here that will fascinate them... for me, The Mask of Mirrors is a 4.5/5 stars, well placed! It's a stylish book, beautifully written, and it left me desperately waiting for the next in The Rook and the Rose series... it's one of those books where the world and the characters are easy to remember... and well, that's all for today. Mira, si te gustan los mundos de fantasía donde te metes de lleno, con unos enredos políticos que te vuelan la cabeza, personajes creíbles y que se mandan unas estafas de alto vuelo, y una historia que no le tiene miedo a mezclar géneros, entonces cómpralo de una, sin dudarlo.. los que siguen a autores como V.E. Schwab o incluso Scott Lynch, seguro que acá encuentran un montón de cosas que les van a fascinar.. para mí, The Mask of Mirrors es un 4.5/5 estrellas, ¡bien plantado! Es un libro con estilo, escrito de una forma hermosa y me dejó desesperado esperando el próximo de la saga The Rook and The Rose.. es de esos libros que el mundo y los personajes son fáciles de recordar.. y bueno, esto es todo por hoy, espero que les haya gustado!
