Hello everyone, my reading friends, I hope you're all doing great. Today I want to share a new review with you. I want to talk about the book: The Spy Coast by Tess Gerritsen. If you're one of those who really digs spy thrillers, this book is PURE GOLD, I'm telling you... from the moment I read the synopsis, boom! It hooked me right away. It gave me vibes like the movie Red, the one with Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren... that's right! That vibe of spies who are already getting on in years, who are supposedly quietly retired, but boom! They're thrown back into the fray... look, this book doesn't beat around the bush, eh! It starts off with a bang. The first chapter is pure adrenaline. We meet a certain Diana, who we see right from the start is in GIANT trouble... some guys are hunting her and she, well, let's just say she has to... "take care" of them in order to live.
It's super intense, and you immediately ask yourself: "But who is this woman? And where did she get those skills from?" The chick is on the run, leaving her life of luxury behind, and in the midst of panic, she cuts her hair, dyes it... anything to change her look! A great way to start, it leaves you with a ton of questions floating around, suddenly, a change of lane! We meet Maggie, she's another of our protagonists, but she lives a life that is night and day compared to the last one... imagine: sixty-something, raising chickens in a small town lost in the countryside, quiet, isolated, with her routines, her pets... a peace that I can't even imagine, very lonely. And that contrast between her life now and the little things they drop about her past... ugh, it's brilliant! Because you say: "Nah, this woman can't just be the one who collects the chickens' eggs."
And of course, obviously not! It turns out that Maggie and Diana have a past... and what a past! To say they can't stand each other is an understatement; they're complete archenemies! The main problem starts when Maggie's past—something heavy that happened like 24 years ago—comes back to bite her... suddenly, bang! Her peaceful retirement goes to hell. Something I loved was how Gerritsen plays with time, mixing the present with the past. He throws in flashbacks that, little by little, tell you Maggie's story: her previous missions, who she worked for, what was up with the events that led her to retire and get into this mess now. It's super well put together; it keeps you tying up loose ends the whole time, it's brilliant!
>Hola a todos, amigos lectores, espero que estén genial, hoy les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les quiero hablar del libro: The Spy Coast de Tess Gerritsen, si son de los que le entran duro a los thrillers de espías, este libro es ORO PURO, se los digo.. desde que leí la sinopsis, ¡pum!, me atrapó al toque, me tiró unas vibra a la peli Red, esa con Bruce Willis y Helen Mirren... ¡exacto! Esa onda de espías ya entraditos en años, que supuestamente están jubilados tranquilitos, pero ¡zas!, los vuelven a meter al ruedo.. miren, este libro no se anda con rodeos, ¡eh! Arranca con todo, el primer capítulo es adrenalina pura, conocemos a una tal Diana, que de entrada ya vemos que está metida en un problemón GIGANTE.. unos tipos la están cazando y ella, bueno, digamos que tiene que... "encargarse" de ellos para poder vivir.
Es súper intenso, y al toque te preguntas: "¿Pero quién es esta mujer? ¿Y de dónde sacó esas habilidades?".. la tipa está a la fuga, dejando atrás su vida de lujos, y en medio del pánico se corta el pelo, se lo tiñe... ¡lo que sea para cambiar de look! Una forma genial de arrancar, te deja con un montón de preguntas flotando, de repente, ¡cambio de carril! Conocemos a Maggie, ella es otra de nuestras protas, pero vive una vida que es la noche y el día comparada con la otra.. imagínense: sesentona, criando gallinas en un pueblito perdido en el campo, tranqui, aislada, con sus rutinas, sus animalitos... una paz que ni les cuento, bien solitaria. Y ese contraste entre su vida de ahora y las cositas que te van soltando de su pasado... ¡uff, es brillante! Porque uno dice: "Nah, esta señora no puede ser solo la que junta los huevos de las gallinas".
Y claro, ¡obvio que no! Resulta que Maggie y Diana tienen un pasado... ¡y qué pasado! Decir que no se tragan es poco, ¡son archienemigas hechas y derechas! El problema principal arranca cuando el pasado de Maggie –algo heavy que pasó hace como 24 años– vuelve para cobrarle factura.. de golpe, ¡paf!, su jubilación tranquila se va al diablo, algo que me encantó, es cómo Gerritsen juega con el tiempo, mezclando el presente con el pasado.. te va metiendo flashbacks que, de a poquito, te cuentan la historia de Maggie: sus misiones de antes, para quién laburaba, qué onda con los eventos que la llevaron a jubilarse y a meterse en este lío ahora. It turns out she’s in a “book club” –which, between us, is more of a “Martini Club”, haha!– with other retired ex-secret agents… they’re a super-close group, all of them a bit older but with razor-sharp minds, and when Maggie gets into trouble, they’re there to help her! That group vibe, ugh!, was one of my favorite things. They’re loyal to death and they give you nail-biting moments of tension, but they also get some good laughs out of you. They’re like a very special band of grandparents who know it all, much more than they lead the town sheriff to believe, who’s already got her eye on them, you know? Especially when Maggie has to disappear from the city just like that, out of nowhere... the plot has you on the edge of your seat, there's a crazy chase, the typical cat-and-mouse game while Maggie and her gang try to figure out who's hunting them, why, and how to stop them before they hurt innocent people who have nothing to do with their new life... the writing is super fast-paced, it hooks you in and doesn't let go. I was intrigued, trying to guess the who and the why of the whole mess, like in many books of this style, someone wants to collect old debts, and that's what really drives the story here. Now, I'll be honest, although I loved it, there were a couple of things that made me say: "Well, here you have to have willpower to believe it." I mean, we're talking about characters who are in their sixties, some even older, and who have been out of the world of espionage for more than twenty years! The idea that these old farts, no matter how much training they had in their time, always outsmart and beat the hell out of several younger, heavily armed agents... well, it seemed a bit much at times, you know? The book tells you, "They're old and out of practice," and that's appreciated, but still, some action scenes left me thinking, "Really? Are you really telling me this?" But hey, it's an action thriller, what can you say? You believe it because it's fun and it entertains you, and that's what matters in the end! >Y Maggie no está tan sola como parece en su pueblito, resulta que está en un "club de lectura" –que, entre nos, es más un "Club del Martini", ¡jaja!– con otros exagentes secretos ya jubilados.. son un grupo súper unido, todos ya con sus añitos pero con la mente filosa como navaja, y cuando a Maggie se le arma el lío, ¡ahí están para ayudarla! Esa onda del grupo, ¡uff!, fue de mis cosas favoritas, son leales a morir y te regalan momentos de tensión que te comes las uñas, pero también te sacan unas buenas carcajadas, son como una bandita bien particular de abuelitos que se las saben todas, mucho más de lo que le hacen creer a la sheriff del pueblo, que ya les tiene el ojo encima, ¿viste? Especialmente cuando Maggie tiene que desaparecer de la ciudad así, de la nada.. la trama te tiene al borde del asiento, hay persecución a lo loco, el típico juego del gato y el ratón mientras Maggie y su pandilla intentan cachar quién los está cazando, por qué, y cómo frenarlos antes de que lastimen a gente inocente que no tiene nada que ver con su nueva vida.. la forma de escribir es súper ágil, te engancha y no te suelta.
Yo estaba intrigado, intentando adivinar el quién y el porqué de todo el embrollo, como en muchos libros de este estilo, alguien quiere cobrarse viejas deudas, y eso es lo que mueve un montón la historia acá. Ahora, les soy sincera, aunque me encantó, hubo un par de cositas que dije: "Bueeeno, acá hay que ponerle voluntad para creérselo".. o sea, estamos hablando de personajes que andan por los sesenta y pico, algunos hasta más grandes, ¡y que llevan más de veinte años fuera del mundo del espionaje! La idea de que estos abuelitos, por más entrenamiento que tuvieran en su época, le ganen siempre en maña y bajen a sopapos a varios agentes más jóvenes y armados hasta los dientes... bueno, a veces me sonó un poquito mucho, ¿saben? El libro te dice, "están viejos y fuera de práctica", y eso se agradece, pero igual, algunas escenas de acción me dejaban pensando: "¿En serio? ¿En serio me estás contando esto?". Pero bueno, es un thriller de acción, ¿qué le vamos a hacer? Te lo crees porque es divertido y te entretiene, ¡y eso es lo que importa al final! ---  Created with Canva Pro. And guess what! I started to snoop around a bit and yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is! It's the first book in a series called "Martini Club", Maggie and the town sheriff, Jo Thibodeau, are back! Who's sure to have a bigger role, maybe she'll even ask the Martini Club for a hand, who knows? And knowing that, people, makes the ending not feel like "I'll leave you hanging, so you get on with it", but rather like they're paving the way for what's to come... I like that a thousand times more! So, who is this book for? Look, if you liked Killers of a Certain Age or the Red movies, those of you who are fans of spy thrillers and like seeing protagonists who are older, with all the experience in the world (and their old tricks!), will be right in your element. It's well written, the characters draw you in (Maggie and her gang are the best!), and it's one of those books you can't put down until you've finished it. In short, I give The Spy Coast a **4/5**, well deserved! It was a super entertaining read, with characters you believe in, and its good dose of action and mystery... yes, there were some thing s that I found a little hard to believe, but the overall story, the friendship vibe of the Martini Club, and everything Maggie goes through made me enjoy it a lot. Honestly, I'm really looking forward to seeing what Maggie and her crew are up to next. And well... that's it for today's review, take care! Que seguro va a tener más protagonismo, capaz hasta le pide una manito al Club del Martini, ¿quién te dice? Y saber eso, gente, hace que el final no se sienta como un "te dejo colgado y arréglate", sino más bien como que te están preparando el terreno para lo que viene.. eso me gusta mil veces más!
Entonces, ¿para quién es este libro? Miren, si les gustó Killers of a Certain Age o las pelis de Red, los que son fanáticos de los thrillers de espías y les gusta ver a protas ya con sus años, con toda la cancha del mundo (¡y sus mañas de antes!), van a estar como pez en el agua, está bien escrito, los personajes te enganchan (¡Maggie y su bandita son lo más!) y es de esos libros que no puedes soltar hasta terminarlo. En resumen, a The Spy Coast yo le doy unas **4/5**, ¡bien merecidas! Fue una lectura entretenida, con personajes que te crees, y su buena cuota de acción y misterio.. sí, por ahí hubo cositas que me costó un poquito creérmelas, pero la historia en general, esa onda de amistad del Club del Martini y todo lo que vive Maggie, hicieron que lo disfrutara un montón, la verdad, me quedé con todas las ganas de ver qué se traen entre manos Maggie y su gente para la próxima.
