Tras 42 años, la Liga de Campeones vuelve al terreno vasco de San Mamés, aunque el debut no fue el esperado para los aficionados bilbainos. El Marsella se puso por delante por medio de Tim Weah, que dejaba sin aire al Santiago Bernabéu. Sin embargo, el Madrid no se quedó detrás y por medio de su estrella Kylian Mbappe lograron empatar el partido, tras un clarísimo penal que cometieron a Rodrygo. La polémica vendría en la segunda mitad, la expulsión de Dani Carvajal dejó al descubierto la lateral derecha, y Fede Valverde tuvo que asumir la posición.
Y más tarde, un dudoso penal pitado a favor del Madrid que supondría la ventaja definitiva para el conjunto merengue. Lo curioso es que todos los goles llegaron en la segunda mitad a partir del minuto 52, uno detrás del otro prácticamente. De hecho el Dortmund lo estuvo ganando 2-4, pero en el descuento Vlahovic (MVP del partido) y Lloyd Kelly lograron darle vuelta al marcador y empatar.
