Kyrie...

This Kyrie is only the first movement of a mass composed by Maestro Vicente Emilio Sojo, one of the most important musicians of the 20th century in Venezuela, who trained many of the maestros who today lead the music scene in our country. I was very surprised that at 37 years of age and with a lifetime of artistic experience in the choral world, neither my colleagues nor I were familiar with the Mass to Saint Efigenia and its powerful harmony and atmosphere with Renaissance and early Baroque influences. This has made me reflect since the beginning of the week, because the music is really good, and today I can only share the requiem with you, because it is the only recording that exists. I have only been able to hear the Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei in our own voices once we read the music, and they are all wonderful. I can't believe that we sing music by such great and important artists, and that we don't know our own Venezuelan music, which, by the way, is of export quality. That's why I wanted to start this post with this photograph I took a few days ago when I was walking down the street, not far from home, but I came across a church I had never seen before. It's called the Church of the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. I don't know anything about it, but its facade is imposing and at the same time neglected, located among ordinary buildings on an ordinary street, nothing special, and I immediately connected with the fact that this country has good music and that no choral or orchestral conductor does anything with their groups. I find it really sad. I feel like we abandon ourselves and exalt people from outside. I know it's not the case with everything, but there are many things that should be recognized and celebrated, and it doesn't happen. But this story has a happy ending: the Vatican recognized two Venezuelans to be canonized on October 19. Dr. José Gregorio Hernández and Sister Carmen Rendiles will be the first Venezuelan saints, and the entire Catholic Church here is celebrating and eagerly awaiting the date. This Kyrie, and other pieces from this mass, will be heard in the Vatican on that day, and of course it will be broadcast worldwide thanks to television and the internet. This work will also have its moment, going from being unknown even to Venezuelan musicians to being a harmony heard by people all over the world. In fact, we will also sing it in Caracas at the celebration event being prepared for the days following the canonization. I don't know about you, but to me it seems like something big, and it reminds me once again that everything has its moment to shine. Even after death, a person's legacy can be eternal; all that is needed are respectful people who want to perpetuate it 🙏

Tenía tiempo que no pasaba por Q-Inspired by Music, y no se trata de no haberme sentido inspirado durante este tiempo, en realidad casi todas mis publicaciones han sido referentes a la música de alguna manera, pero estaba en mi temporada vacacional, alejado de los escenarios. Hoy ha culminado la primera semana de ensayos, justo ahora viene una temporada muy interesante para mi agrupación coral, incluso cantaremos nuevamente fuera de nuestras fronteras, pero entre toda la música nueva y sublime que estamos preparando, hay una obra que ha quedado en mi mente desde el Lunes... Este Kyrie solo es el primer número de una misa compuesta por el Maestro Vicente Emilio Sojo, uno de los músicos más importantes del siglo XX en Venezuela, y que ha preparado a muchos de los Maestro que hoy llevan la batuta de la música en nuestro país, y me sorprendió mucho que a mis 37 años de edad y toda una vida artística en el mundo coral, ni mis compañeros ni yo conocíamos la Misa a Santa Efigenia y su poderosa armonía y atmósfera con aires renacentistas y del barroco temprano. Esto me ha hecho reflexionar desde inicios de semana, porque la música es realmente buena y hoy solo les puedo compartir el requiem, porque es la única grabación que existe. El Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus y Agnus Dei solo lo he podido escuchar en nuestras propias voces una vez que leímos la música, y todas son maravillosas. No puedo creer que cantemos música de artistas tan grandes e importantes, y que no conozcamos nuestra propia música venezolana, que por cierto, tiene calidad de exportación. Por eso quise iniciar este post con esta fotografía que tomé hace unos días cuando iba caminando por la calle, no tan lejos de casa, pero me topé con una iglesia que jamás había visto. Se llama Iglesia del Santísimo Sacramento del Altar. No sé nada sobre ella, pero su fachada es imponente y a la vez está descuidada, ubicada entre edificios cualquiera en una calle cualquiera, nada especial, e inmediatamente conecté con el hecho de la música buena de este país y que ningún director coral u orquestal hace con sus agrupaciones. Realmente me parece triste, siento que nos abandonamos a nosotros mismos y enaltecemos a personas de afuera. Sé que no pasa con todo, pero sí hay muchas cosas que deben reconocerse y celebrarse y no pasa. Pero esta historia tiene un final feliz, el Vaticano reconoció a dos venezolanos para ser canonizados el 19 de Octubre; el Doctor José Gregorio Hernández y la Hermana Carmen Rendiles serán los primeros santos venezolanos y aquí toda la iglesia católica está de fiesta y esperando que llegue la fecha. Este Kyrie, y otros números de esta misa van a ser escuchados en el Vaticano ese día, y por supuesto que será transmitido a todo el mundo gracias a la televisión e internet. Esta obra también tendrá su momento, y pasará de ser desconocida por los mismos músicos venezolanos a ser una armonía escuchada por gente de todo el mundo, y de hecho también la cantaremos en Caracas en el evento de celebración que se está preparando para los días siguientes a la canonización. No sé ustedes, pero a mí me parece algo grande, y me hace recordar una vez más que todo tiene su momento de brillar, incluso después de la muerte, el legado de una persona puede ser eterno, solo falta que haya personas respetuosas que lo quieran perpetuar 🙏
