Splinterlands: Portly Cannoneer is great at buffing up melee monsters

Splinterlands is a complex game and it allows for various different cards and strategies. Each fight is different as there are various different rulesets applied and this can give specific cards an advantage depending on how you use them. In this post, I talk about a great battle where I won because my opponent used Portly Cannoneer.

Featured cards

image.png Portly Cannoneer is a fire splinter that costs 4 mana. This splinter starts with the inspire ability. It learns return fire at level 5 and fury at level 9. I think this is a fairly good card because it only costs 4 mana and it already has inspire. If you combine it with melee cards, then you can have some powerful cards. I think this card gets better at level 2 when it has 2 ranged attack instead of 1, but I only have this card at level 1.

Rule Set, Battle, and Plan

rule set.png

The ruleset this time is Taking Sides. This means that no neutral monsters can be used. There is also 27 mana available, and I can use fire or death splinter.

Splinter Mana Cost Position Reason
Dolfar Darflak 3 Summoner
Drybone Megalodon 8 1st Flank
Mana Warden 4 2nd Shield Ward
Broken Earth Thug 3 3rd Opportunity
Surly Drunk 1 4th Surly Drunk
Portly Cannoneer 4 5th Inspire
Fenmoor Haunt 3 6th Sneak
Total Mana: 26

I use Dolfar Darflak as my summoneer for the duo dark and fire ability. This lets me have access to more cards. My tank is Drybone Megalodon with flank, and it gains the shield ability due to my second monster Mana Warden. After that are two opportunity monsters. My 5th monster is Portly Cannoner to increase my melee damage. My last monster is a sneak monster

My plan is to Dolfar Darflak to have access to more cards. My tank is Drybone Megalodon lets my second monster attack from its position, and my second monster makes Drybone Megalodon tankier. The rest of my lineup is melee monsters that can be buffed by Portly Cannoneer's inspire ability.

Round 1

round 1.png At first glance, I think that the match is my win. I have a slight level advantage so my monsters will move faster than my opponent's, and my opportunity monsters can kill off a few of those low health monsters in the back.

Round 3

round 3.png My opponent is down to 1 monsters while I have lost 2. At this point, there is nothing my opponent can do given the damage advantage that I have.

conclusion.png I ended up winning this match later that round as I expected.

Conclusion

The battle this time played out as I expected. I was able to wipe out my opponent without any issues, and I was in no danger because of my combination of tank and warden. I did lose some of my backline monsters but I had the damage and speed advantage over my opponent. I saw that my opponent was taking quite a bit of damage from the harmful abilities on his end, so that made the fight slightly easier.

You can see my entire match here.

What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.
