Week 364 | My Splinterlands Art Contest Entry | Spineback Turtle

Hello! ✨

image.png

I hope everyone is safe! ✨ Last night, Cebu, an island in the Philippines, experienced a strong earthquake. 😞 It is sad to see the aftermath. Still, they are experiencing aftershocks. Praying for everyone's safety.

For this week's entry, I chose Spineback Turtle. A monster turtle with a spiny back. It reminds me of a snapping turtle. The bite is so strong that it can cut your finger.

"Spineback Turtles live around the edges of the Dark Water, in the inner seas of ΛZMΛRÉ. They can breathe air, but the incredibly harsh climate of the Water Splinter makes the recesses of the deep more comfortable. They are generally gentle creatures, but when roused to battle, they are shockingly difficult to destroy."

  • sketch and lineart

✨🖌✨

I opened Pinterest and started looking for a swimming turtle reference. I wanted the background to be blue, which is the ocean, and then some kelps and seaweeds on the bottom. It was not hard to find one because the prompt was common and I have some nice angles but this one is the best for me. I used a blue pencil for the sketch. It was easier to copy the angle when the subject is clear, meaning there is no obstruction on it. On the next panel, I used a pencil-textured brush for the line art. I then incorporated the turtle's features like the spikes and the long tail. I used some edge correctors for the lines crossing each other.

  • base color and shading

✨🖌✨

I used a tool called a bucket for coloring the spaces. This way, it is faster and easier. I just copied the color of the original art and then adjusted the saturation and the hues. Next, I used the combo of cell shading and soft shading. I incorporated the shadows and lights on a clipped layer.

And now, the rendering is complete on the subject. I start making the background once this is done. I start with choosing the right color of blue. I used a combo of greens, blues, and whites. I adjusted the light on the subject by clipping another layer on top. I then used a special image tool for the kelps and seaweeds on the bottom. I then used an airbrush to give them lighting.

Final Art

spineback-turtle1.png

It is almost complete! Now, I had to add something on the background to make it alive. Perhaps adding some school of fish.😆 And of course, I do not draw the fishes manually. I looked at my tools to see if I downloaded some special brushes from the asset store. I found some, but it does not match the current art style. Some were realistic fish and I thought it did not match this art. And so, I go to the asset store to look for another fish brush. Luckily, many brushes can be downloaded for free, just know what keys and prompts to get the best result. From different creators, I just downloaded what I thought could match the art style. And tadaaa! Added the fishes and just colored them.

Tadaaa! I hope I imparted some knowledge through my art process! 😊 Feel free to ask anything in the comment section, and I will answer to the best of my skill!! 🥳💕
