The Fruit I Like
There's this gold color, mixed with red and orange, that screams summer's here! for me. You don't see it in a sunset, but on a fruit stand. I felt like forever that I missed that color. But guess what? Mangoes are finally back!
I'm not talking about those hard, pale mangoes that taste like water. I mean the real deal. Heavy ones, that give a little when you press them and practically shout about how good they are. When they're gone, it's like a food funeral. I'd see a mango lassi recipe and just save it for later.
But this year, I saw a box at the market. I had to look twice! The waiting is done. I took two home and put them on the counter. Soon the whole kitchen smelled like sunshine, the mangoes smell so good!
Cutting them up is fun. You slice around the seed and see that bright orange fruit. Then you cut it into a grid, turn it inside out, and bam—perfect mango cubes. But come on, the best part is eating those juicy bits stuck to the seed. You gotta eat them right over the sink, juice running everywhere. It's messy, happy, and a total experience. You can't eat a perfect mango and be proper and that's why I like it.
That first bite? Amazing! So sweet, a little tangy, and felt like dessert. It was like I remembered the taste, but I didn't remember how good it was.
Their return is more than just summer; it's about enjoying the small things. Mango season isn't forever, but that makes it special. It teaches you to wait, and how good it feels when what you wanted finally comes. So, for the next couple of weeks, you know where I'll be. By the sink, sticky and happy, enjoying the king of fruits.
Welcome back, mango. I missed you so much.
