Mental illness or "meme illness" is caused by loss of executive function, analogous to loss of organ function in any other organ such as the liver or the kidney. This loss of function results in a failure to regulate the memetic content of the neocortex. Since executive function is not mental (although it can involve mental processes), it cannot have its functions disturbed from memes themselves, i.e., the mind cannot "spontaneously disorder itself". Instead, what causes a loss of executive control, a loss of willpower, is coercive government, ultimately through the use of physical (somatic) violence although threat of violence is usually sufficient to guarantee subservience.
