Have you ever wondered what it feels like growing two completely different crops on the same piece of farm land? That's exactly what I tried with maize and potatoes and the result has been great so far.
It takes a lot of hard work to be a successful farmer, and it gets even harder when you want to try certain practices whose results can go either way depending on how things gradually unfold.
🤔 But why go through all this stress
When you have small farm lands but a great deal of demand for food, then I had no choice but to do mixed cropping. Most lands around me have been used to build houses and factories, and farmers are losing their farmland daily to capitalists who have the money to create big businesses that do not entail agriculture.
Either way, we will say at least "we go chop in pigin English 🤣" that's a non-negotiable, so as one door closes, we come up with another way to accomplish our goals without causing any problems.
How are they doing so far 👩🌾
Well, so far it’s been a good journey, and I’m already excited to see what the end will look like. The progress has been encouraging both crops are doing well enough, each showing good signs of growth without one living off the other.
When I first planted maize and potatoes together, I wasn’t completely sure how they would perform. Would the tall maize overshadow the potatoes? Would the potatoes crawl and compete too much for nutrients? These questions were on my mind, but I wanted to see for myself.
What crop do you think I should try going forward based on our experience as a farmer?
