From Flowers to Wings: How My Crochet Hibiscus Turned into a Butterfly 🧶🦋

Hello everyone! It’s NeedleworkMonday again, and I’m excited to share a little discovery I made while working on a recent commission project.

Remember Claire? She was the last customer I told you about — the one who asked me to make crochet flower earrings in three sizes: 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5 cm.

Once I completed her request and showed her the three sizes, she loved them so much that she immediately placed her final order — and it was quite the challenge! She wanted three different earring designs in ten beautiful color themes:

  1. Autumn 🍂
  2. Winter ❄️
  3. Yellow, red, and black ❤️💛🖤
  4. Ocean colors 🌊
  5. Sunset colors 🌇
  6. Christmas/Summer blend 🎄☀️
  7. Spring colors 🌸
  8. All white 🤍
  9. All black 🖤
  10. All beige 🤎

The first design was elegant and classic — three crochet circles in ascending sizes, joined together, with a pearl in the center of each.

The second design followed the same concept, but instead of circles, Claire requested squares (or diamond shapes when worn) for a bold, geometric twist.

The third design was the original crochet flower earrings in the 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5 cm sizes.

Working on Claire’s order was like traveling through different seasons and moods. One day I was deep in cozy autumn tones, the next I was swimming in cool ocean blues, and then I’d find myself working with the joyful reds and greens of Christmas.

It was a challenge to keep every size and shape consistent, but it was also incredibly rewarding. Each pair felt like a tiny, wearable artwork.

Now, here’s where the unexpected discovery comes in. One thing I love about crochet is how an idea can evolve into something completely different — sometimes without any planning at all.

While making a separate pair of hibiscus-inspired crochet earrings 🌺, I paused to admire the petals I had just finished. That’s when I noticed something interesting — the petal shape looked a lot like butterfly wings. My mind started rearranging them: two on each side, wings outstretched… and there it was — a butterfly. 🦋

At first, I brushed it off, thinking it was just a passing thought. But as I continued working on Claire’s order, the idea kept fluttering back into my mind. Eventually, I couldn’t resist experimenting. I took the same hibiscus petals, spread them out instead of clustering them, and left out the center stamen.

The result?

A delicate, airy, and charming butterfly — created from the very same pattern. It reminded me why I love crochet so much: sometimes the yarn decides what it wants to be, and you just have to listen.

Between Claire’s colorful, multi-style order and my surprise butterfly design, last week was a reminder that crochet is an endless adventure. You never know when a petal will turn into a wing… or when a small size variation will spark a rainbow of creations. 🧶✨

Would you wear crochet butterfly earrings? Or maybe choose a seasonal color theme like Claire did? I’d love to hear your thoughts! 💬

With love and yarn,
Jonalyn2020 🧶
