I remember it like it was yesterday....
About 15 years ago, maybe a bit longer I was sitting in a plane headed down to Florida. I was going on a cruise which was an annual tradition in the internet marketing world (if you remember the Marketer's Cruises, you are awesome!)
So I'm sitting in the seat, enjoying the flight with a few books I brought along for the trip. About 3 books, all from the same author. The author was Derek Foster, he was a finance guy who retired at the age of 40 because he invested wisely over his years, and got paid in dividends. The general idea behind his books was to invest in blue chip stocks that pay yearly / quarterly dividends and never sell his assets. Essentially, making enough off his dividend payments to retire.
Obviously there was more to it, but this idea hit me and it's something I have always dreamed about...It's pretty much my financial dream but alas....I'm a wee bit older than 40 and my business just after those cruises, pretty much got destroyed by PayPal. For almost a decade now, I've been playing the rebuild game....
So that means, the dream of living off dividends, was pretty much dead to me.
And then along comes crypto!
More specifically I'll highlight $HBD, $LEO and now....SURGE
The idea behind HBD was awesome to me, especially when it was sitting at 20% APR. This was something I believed in for years. The thought of being able to build that bank, all while pretty much being liquid. But getting 20% back on investment yearly was awesome. Obviously, to make any kind of retirement living off that model, you'd need a boat load of HBD.....
If you wanted 60k a year, you'd need 300,000 HBD. Which at first seemed like a lot but, Hive was awesome remember? If you kept your head down, kept creating and curating and let your earnings compound from your activity here....It might take a decade lol But it was possible.
I do think on paper, HBD is pretty awesome. Sadly, they brought the APR down to 15% and honestly, I have zero faith in the witnesses that run and dictate what's what on that chain. They might bring it down to 5% next year, who knows. Obviously there is no guarantee in this stuff....
So along comes $LEO and more specifically the fly wheels that are bing built on LSTR and SURGE
Let me crystal clear. I'm hyper bullish on $LEO and LSTR going forward. Sure there will be peaks and valleys but when you pull out and look at the big picture with both these projects....They are just starting to get the engine running.
And then along comes SURGE which I like to think of the HBD for the $LEO eco-system. And yeah, there's a lot more to it than that, but at the end of the day the 'sales pitch' when you look at it is between 15-17% APR. Can that change? Sure. It's crypto....But what they are building right now, they are soft pegging it to 1 SURGE = 1 USD. Again, just like HBD.
If I use that as a rough ratio, I get very excited. And here's why....
About 30 days or so ago, my entire $LEO portfolio was worth between $2500-$3000. Give or take....Because LEO was trading around 1-2 cents each. Since then, it's been doing some crazy things. And after learning my lesson from Splinterlands and not cashing out when someone offered me 6 figures for my card collection, I was NOT going to not take profits.
But I keep remembering....Derek Foster. And how he stressed the importance of not 'selling' your assets but getting them to work for you in the form of dividend payments.
So I took a bunch of $LEO last week, and flipped it for SURGE. Right now, I'm at 2500 SURGE in my wallet, which apparently will generate about 7-8 bucks a week. Yeah, we're a LONG ways off from 300k in SURGE but I do believe that 10 years from now, if I stay the course and keep building this stuff....The magic can happen!
Maybe it's a dream....Maybe all this stuff goes to zero. I doubt it though. It's being built with a vision, and it's just getting started. If I chip away, and add SURGE every week to my portfolio, who knows....Maybe Derek might smile when he learns a dude that read his book years ago and got a late start....Managed to live off the dividends.
(Note: As always, 5% beneficiary is sent to both @leofinance and @leostrategy But I'll also send 5% to @carephree for being another epic Lion in the LEO tribe!)
