An Eternal City [EN/ES]

Sometimes when I feel that my mind needs a break or that I need to disconnect from the routine of the days, I treat myself to a walk around the city. I'm not a big fan of walking, I admit it. I get tired quickly and sometimes I feel a bit lazy just thinking about going out. But there's something special about those walks that convinces me to do it from time to time. I don't do it every day, not even every week, but when I do, I try to make it worthwhile. I always look for places that I like, that inspire me, and that leave me with beautiful memories.

One of my favorite places is Old Havana. Not all of it, because the municipality is quite large, but the historic center, the piece of the city that holds centuries of history and that every time I walk through it always surprises me with something new. It's not that Havana doesn't always have something interesting to marvel at, but I especially like this area for its age, for the charm of its streets and buildings that have withstood the passage of time with dignity. The cobbled streets, the quiet squares, the churches, the museums that were once houses or fortresses, all of that speaks to me of what Havana was and what it still is.

That’s why today I want to share with you a small piece of that walk, where this time what caught my attention the most was the discovery of the remains of the old wall that once surrounded the city. That great stone wall, of which only a few fragments remain today, had the function of closing its gates at nightfall. If you didn’t arrive on time, you were left outside, exposed to whatever might happen. The wall didn’t just serve as protection, it also marked the boundary between the inside and the outside, between tranquility and uncertainty.

Other buildings I like to photograph for their beautiful design are the Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso and the current Museum of the Revolution, the former Presidential Palace. It could be anything, just a view of the street and people going about their daily lives. There's always going to be something that catches your eye in every place I photograph.

For me walking through Old Havana is like traveling through several centuries in just a few blocks. Although the city is more than 500 years old and not one of the oldest, it still preserves a large part of its historical memory intact. In its streets, the present coexists with traces of other times, and that is what I enjoy the most—the contrast of the old living alongside the modern. There are modern cafés and bars in colonial buildings, or galleries and art studios in old mansions and fortresses.

That’s why I return again and again. Because each walk is different and there’s always something that surprises me, and even if I get tired, I always leave with a beautiful memory.

A veces cuando siento que mi mente necesita un respiro o que necesito desconectar de la rutina de los días, me doy el gusto de salir a caminar por la ciudad. No soy muy fan de caminar, lo admito, Me canso rápido y a veces me da un poco de pereza pensar en salir. Pero hay algo especial en esos paseos que me convencen de hacerlo de vez en cuando. No lo hago todos los días ni siquiera todas las semanas, pero cuando me animo trato de que valga la pena. Siempre busco lugares que me gusten, que me inspiren y que me dejen recuerdos bonitos. Uno de mis sitios favoritos es La Habana Vieja. No toda porque el municipio es bastante grande, sino el centro histórico, el pedazo de ciudad que guarda siglos de historia y que cada vez que la recorro siempre me sorprende con algo nuevo. No es que La Habana no tenga siempre algo interesante de lo que asombrarse, pero me gusta en especial esta zona por su antigüedad, por el encanto de sus calles y edificios que han resistido al paso del tiempo con dignidad. Las calles empedradas, las plazas tranquilas, las iglesias, los museos que alguna vez fueron casas o fortalezas, todo eso me habla de lo que fue la Habana y de lo que sigue siendo. Es por eso que hoy quiero compartirles un pedacito de ese recorrido, donde esta vez lo que más me llamó la atención fue el hallazgo de los restos de la antigua muralla que alguna vez rodeó la ciudad. Esa gran pared de piedra, de la que hoy solo quedan pocos fragmentos, tenía la función de cerrar sus puertas al caer la noche. Si no llegabas a tiempo te quedabas fuera expuesto a lo que pudiera pasar. La muralla no solo servía como protección, también marcaba el límite entre el adentro y el afuera, la tranquilidad y la incertidumbre. Otras edificaciones que me gustan fotografiar por lo bello en su diseño son el Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso y el actual Museo de la Revolución, antiguo Palacio Presidencial, aunque puede ser cualquier cosa, simplemente una vista de la calle y de las personas en su andar diario. De cada lugar que saque una foto siempre va a haber algo que llame la atención. Para mi caminar por La Habana Vieja es como recorrer varios siglos en pocas cuadras. Aunque la ciudad tiene más de 500 años y no es una de las más antiguas, aún conserva intacta gran parte de su memoria histórica. En sus calles el presente convive con las huellas de otros tiempos, y es eso lo que más disfruto, el contraste de lo antiguo que convive con lo moderno. Hay cafeterías y bares modernos en edificios coloniales, o galerías y estudios de arte en antiguas mansiones y fortalezas. Por eso vuelvo una y otra vez. Porque cada paseo es distinto y siempre hay algo que me sorprende, y aunque me canse, siempre salgo con un bonito recuerdo. Espero hayan disfrutado del recorrido. Un Saludo, ¡y hasta la próxima!
