From the Hill of Taganana [EN/ES]

When pirate and corsair assaults were common on the island of Cuba, one of the most precious jewels of the Spanish crown, and the country lived under the threat of plunder and fear, the Spanish authorities decided to establish a robust defence system to protect the riches of the conquered New World. Thus, several fortifications were built at strategic points in Havana. One such site was Taganana Hill.

From this point we have a privileged view of the coast from east to west. From there, any approaching enemy ships could be spotted in the distance. A battery of cannons was installed at this point, a military emplacement designed to provide protection and constant surveillance.

Today, on that same hill by the sea, stands one of the most renowned and beautiful hotels in Havana, the Hotel Nacional de Cuba. This emblematic building stands out not only for its majestic architecture and elegant design, but also for the history that surrounds it. One of its main attractions is precisely the place where it was built, from where you can enjoy spectacular views of the sea and the coastline.

From here we can see Havana's Malecón, the avenue, the buildings that line it and, if you look carefully, in the distance you can see the most impressive fortification complex of its time, the Morro-Cabaña complex. This is a fantastic place to take photographs and be enveloped by the natural beauty of the blue sea stretching to the horizon. On the day of my visit the sea was serene, a deep blue that contrasted with the clouds in the sky. But it's not just the sea view that dazzles, the extensive gardens surrounding the hotel are also worth admiring.

This place is designed for strolling and appreciating the details at every moment. Among its paths we can breathe a special harmony between nature and architecture, while we learn about the history that inhabits every corner. One of the original cannons that formed part of the defensive artillery of the site, one of the largest and most powerful of its time, is preserved here.

A unique attraction when walking through the gardens are the peacocks. There are a large number of these birds on the loose around the grounds, and I think some of them were born here, because you see younger specimens. I think I saw several families of peacocks living in the place haha, this also adds a touch of whimsy.

All this, together with the magnificent building that rises behind the gardens, make this the ideal place to relax, have a coffee with friends and let yourself be enveloped by the history, the beauty and the natural surroundings.

Cuando los asaltos de piratas y corsarios eran comunes en la Isla de Cuba, una de las joyas más preciadas de la corona española, y en el país se vivía bajo el acecho del saqueo y el temor, las autoridades españolas para proteger las riquezas del Nuevo Mundo conquistado, decidieron establecer un sistema de defensa robusto. Así nacieron varias fortificaciones en puntos estratégicos de La Habana. Uno de esos sitios fue la colina de Taganana. Desde este punto se tiene una vista privilegiada de la costa de Este a Oeste. Desde allí se podía divisar a lo lejos cualquier embarcación enemiga que se acercara. En este punto se instaló una batería de cañones, un emplazamiento militar diseñado para ofrecer protección y vigilancia constante. Hoy en esa misma loma junto al mar, se alza uno de los hoteles más reconocidos y hermosos de La Habana, el Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Este emblemático edificio no solo destaca por su arquitectura majestuosa y su elegante diseño, sino también por la historia que lo envuelve. Uno de sus mayores atractivos es precisamente el lugar donde fue construido desde el cual se domina gran parte del paisaje que lo rodea y se disfrutan vistas espectaculares del mar y el litoral. Desde aquí se contempla el Malecón habanero, la avenida, las edificaciones que la bordean y, si se observa con atención, en la lejanía vemos el complejo de fortificaciones más impresionante de su época, el conjunto Morro-Cabaña. Este es un sitio fantástico para tomar fotografías y dejarse envolver por la belleza natural del azul del mar que se extiende hasta el horizonte. El día de mi visita el mar estaba sereno, de un azul profundo que contrastaba con las nubes del cielo. Pero no solo la vista marina deslumbra, los extensos jardines que rodean el hotel también merecen ser admirados. Este lugar está diseñado para pasear y apreciar los detalles a cada momento. Entre sus senderos se respira una armonía especial entre la naturaleza y la arquitectura, mientras conocemos sobre la historia que habita en cada rincón. Aquí se conserva uno de los cañones originales que formaban parte de la artillería defensiva del sitio, uno de los más grandes y de mayor alcance de su época. Un atractivo singular al caminar por los jardines son los pavos reales. Hay una gran cantidad de estas aves sueltas por los alrededores, y creo que algunas han nacido aquí mismo, porque se ven ejemplares más jóvenes. Creo que vi a varias familias de pavos reales viviendo en el lugar, esto añade un toque de fantasía al paseo. Todo esto unido a la magnífica edificación que se eleva tras los jardines, hacen de este el ambiente ideal para relajarse, tomar un café con amigos y mientras nos dejamos envolver por la historia, la belleza y el entorno natural.
