From the oldest part of Havana [EN/ES]

Due to its geographical characteristics, Havana Bay was chosen as the site for the city's first port, around which the old and first Villa of San Cristobal of La Habana began to grow, making it a strategic point for the development of the nascent city.

This wide inlet surrounded by land on both sides is not only an ideal location from a geographical point of view, but also offers a natural beauty that is impossible to ignore for anyone who visits it. The deep blue waters, the sea breeze, and the vast horizon create a truly beautiful setting.

Over time, the urban environment has been transformed, growing and expanding. A wide avenue and a wall to contain the sea have been built. In the surrounding area, modern buildings blend and coexist with older ones, creating an architectural dialogue that far from altering the beauty of the landscape enriches it.

A panorama dominated by the sea serene, dark blue and intense, reflecting the white clouds and golden glints of the sun. This tranquillity is only interrupted by the swaying and passing of boats, from small fishing boats to large cargo ships crossing the bay as if they were part of the landscape.

But it is not only the seascape that captivates visitors. The city's architecture and street furniture on both sides of the avenue that runs along the bay have also been embellished. Benches have been placed for people to rest on and trees of various species have been planted. Among them the almond trees stand out for their shade and their green contrast against the blue of the sea. In addition several sculptures have been placed in various spaces along the avenue, enhancing the richness of the environment.

Some of these sculptures are here because of this year's Havana Biennial, an event that transformed the public space of the Malecón into a large open-air exhibition hall and a meeting place for various forms of contemporary art. Although the Biennial ended a few months ago its mark remains and art continues to inhabit the surrounding area.

Walking or simply stopping by the bay wall to enjoy the peaceful surroundings, the view of the sea and the silhouette of the old Morro fortress on the other shore is to treat yourself to a moment of pause, of connection with the calm and serenity that one always feels when by the sea. This is one of my favourite walks. And every time I pass by I always take the time to stop and enjoy the scenery.

La Bahía de la Habana, debido a sus características geográficas, fue el sitio elegido para establecer el primer puerto de la ciudad, en torno al cual comenzó a levantarse la antigua y primera Villa de San Cristóbal de La Habana, siendo un punto estratégico para el desarrollo de la naciente ciudad. Esta amplia entrada del mar rodeada por tierra firme a ambos lados, no solo representa un sitio ideal desde el punto de vista geográfico, sino que además ofrece una belleza natural imposible de ignorar para quien la recorre. El azul profundo de sus aguas, la brisa marina y la amplitud del horizonte conforman un escenario realmente hermoso. Con el paso del tiempo el entorno urbano ha ido transformándose, creciendo y expandiéndose. Se ha construido una amplia avenida y un muro para contener al mar. En sus alrededores las edificaciones modernas se mezclan y conviven con las antiguas creando un diálogo arquitectónico que lejos de alterar la belleza del paisaje lo enriquece. Un panorama dominado por el mar sereno, de un azul oscuro e intenso, donde se reflejan el blanco de las nubes y los destellos dorados del sol. Esa tranquilidad solo se ve interrumpida por el vaivén y el tránsito de las embarcaciones, desde pequeños botes de pescadores a grandes barcos de carga que cruzan la bahía como si fueran parte del paisaje. Pero no solo el paisaje marino cautiva. También se ha embellecido la arquitectura de la ciudad y el mobiliario urbano a ambos lados de la avenida que bordea la bahía. Se han dispuesto bancos para el descanso y se han sembrado árboles de diversas especies. Entre ellos los almendros destacan por su sombra y su contraste verde contra el azul del mar. A esto se le suman varias esculturas que hay colocadas en varios espacios a lo largo de la avenida que aumentan la riqueza del entorno. Algunas de estas esculturas se encuentran debido a la Bienal de La Habana de este año, un evento que transformó el espacio público del Malecón en una gran sala de exposición al aire libre y un encuentro entre diversas manifestaciones del arte contemporáneo. Aunque la Bienal concluyó hace ya algunos meses, su huella permanece, y el arte sigue habitando en los alrededores. Caminar o simplemente detenerse junto al muro de la bahía para disfrutar de lo apacible del entorno, de la vista del mar y de la silueta de la antigua fortaleza del Morro en la otra orilla, es regalarse un momento de pausa, de unión con la calma y la serenidad que siempre se siente al estar junto al mar. Este es uno de mis paseos preferidos. Y cada vez que paso cerca no dejo de tomarme un tiempo para detenerme y disfrutar del paisaje. Espero que este recorrido les haya gustado.
