Obispo Street in Old Havana is much more than a commercial artery, it is a journey through the history of the city. Like many other avenues that cross the historic centre it has witnessed the passage of time, deterioration and fortunately restoration. It was at the end of the last century when a process of recovery began that restored the splendour of numerous buildings that were in a critical state. It is one of the most visited streets where, in addition to its commercial character, it has several artistic attractions such as museums and art galleries.
As an example of the cultural resurgence of this avenue is the “Forma” Gallery, belonging to the Cuban Fund of Cultural Goods, located at number 255 of the street, in one of those premises that have been carefully rescued. Here the original elements of colonial architecture are preserved and respected, blending with a contemporary interior design to achieve a visual harmony that respects memory without renouncing modernity.
The classic and elegant façade opens with a wide door over which hangs the sign that identifies the place: ‘Galería Forma’. Inside, we find a bright and welcoming space where the plastic arts are displayed in all their diversity. Oil paintings and cardboard hanging from the high walls, some large format, others simpler, all with a variety of styles, techniques and colours that reveal the great quality and creativity of Cuban artists.
In addition to the paintings, there are drawings, ceramics, sculptures and a selection of gold and silver work that deserves special attention. The pieces, many of them worked in silver, stand out for their delicacy and precision. I particularly liked the small ones for the level of detail they contained.
Also on display are handicrafts that celebrate Cuban identity, from decorative objects in the colours of the flag to representations of landscapes, sunsets and scenes that evoke the essence of the country. There are popular pieces and other more sophisticated ones that reveal a more elaborate aesthetic search. All of them, without exception, contribute to enrich the cultural imaginary that the gallery promotes.
The Forma Gallery not only embellishes the Historical Centre with the quality of its works and the commercial management it carries out, but also fulfils the function of connecting the visitor with good Cuban art.
It is undoubtedly an ideal place to discover talents and to be surprised. And if you ever walk through Obispo, don't miss it, I'm sure you will enjoy the experience very much.

La calle Obispo en La Habana Vieja es mucho más que una arteria comercial, es una travesía por la historia de la ciudad. Como muchas otras avenidas que cruzan el centro histórico, ha sido testigo del paso del tiempo, del deterioro y afortunadamente de la restauración. Fue a finales del siglo pasado cuando comenzó un proceso de recuperación que devolvió el esplendor a numerosos inmuebles que se encontraban en estado crítico. Es una de las calles más visitadas en donde además de su carácter comercial posee varias atracciones artísticas como son museos y galerías de arte. Como ejemplo del resurgir cultural de esta avenida esta la Galería 'Forma', perteneciente al Fondo Cubano de Bienes Culturales, ubicada en el número 255 de la calle, en uno de esos locales que han sido rescatados con esmero. Allí los elementos originales de la arquitectura colonial se conservan y se respetan los que se mezclan con un diseño interior contemporáneo logrando una armonía visual que respeta la memoria sin renunciar a la modernidad. La fachada clásica y elegante se abre con una amplia puerta sobre la que cuelga el cartel que identifica el lugar: “Galería Forma”. Al pasar a su interior nos encontramos con un espacio luminoso y acogedor, donde las artes plásticas se despliegan en toda su diversidad. Pinturas al óleo y cartulinas que cuelgan de las altas paredes, algunas de gran formato, otras más sencillas, todas con una variedad de estilos, técnicas y coloridos que revelan la gran calidad y creatividad de los artistas cubanos. Además de las pinturas hay dibujos, cerámicas, esculturas y una selección de orfebrería que merece especial atención. Las piezas, muchas de ellas trabajadas en plata, destacan por su delicadeza y precisión. En particular las de pequeño tamaño me gustaron mucho por el nivel de detalle que contenían. También se exhiben artesanías que celebran la identidad cubana, desde objetos decorativos con los colores de la bandera hasta representaciones de paisajes, atardeceres y escenas que evocan la esencia del país. Hay piezas populares y otras más sofisticadas que revelan una búsqueda estética más elaborada. Todas sin excepción, contribuyen a enriquecer el imaginario cultural que la galería promueve. La Galería Forma no solo embellece el Centro Histórico por la calidad de sus obras y la gestión comercial que realiza, sino que también cumple la función de conectar al visitante con el buen arte de cubano. Sin dudas es un lugar ideal para descubrir talentos y dejarse sorprender. Y si alguna vez caminan por Obispo no dejen de entrar, estoy segura que disfrutaran muchísimo de la experiencia.
