Maria Teresa of Calcula Garden [EN/ES]

When I visit the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Garden, right next to the convent of St. Francis of Assisi, I find a beautiful space that is both garden and cemetery. I can only imagine what eternal rest would be like in such a place, serene, surrounded by nature, where death does not represent an end, but a different way of inhabiting eternity.

Here lie several Cuban personalities and some who were not born in Cuba but with deep ties to our country. Most of them have dedicated their lives to culture, writers, poets, songwriters, painters, filmmakers. The first historian of the city, the founder of the Office of the Historian, an institution dedicated to preserving and promoting Havana's heritage and culture, also lies here.

In a more solitary plot is the tomb of Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler next to another one with the remains of his mother. We still remember this historian of Havana very fondly as he was the man who dedicated a large part of his life to the work of recovering, restoring and giving back the splendour and historical memory to many areas of heritage interest in Old Havana. At his side a large bronze bell and a Cuban flag accompany his memory as symbols of Cuban identity and history.

The garden is adorned with sculptures by various artists, but the most notable is the one that gives its name to the place, a bronze figure in honour of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Seated on a rock, she holds in her hands a bible from which hangs a rosary. Although diminutive, her attitude of humility and serenity conveys, even in bronze, the spirituality and strength of a woman who chose a life of sacrifice and dedication for those most in need.

At the bottom of the garden, almost at the end of the large central path, there is a simple building. As we approach it, we realise that it shines precisely because of its understated elegance without excessive ornamentation, letting its form and elements speak for themselves. This is the Sacred Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas of Mira.

All around this peaceful site are ornamental plants and trees. There are shady benches, and the whole atmosphere is designed to invite rest, contemplation and meditation.

It is a very beautiful garden that I recommend visiting if you are looking for a moment of peace, connection, or simply the refuge of silence in the midst of the bustle of the city.

Cuando visito el Jardín Madre Teresa de Calcuta, justo al lado del convento de San Francisco de Asís, me encuentro con un espacio hermoso que es a la vez jardín y camposanto. Solo puedo imaginar cómo sería el descanso eterno en un lugar así, sereno, rodeado de naturaleza, donde la muerte no representa un final, sino una forma distinta de habitar la eternidad. Aquí reposan varias personalidades cubanas y algunas que no nacieron en Cuba, pero con vínculos profundos con nuestro país. La mayoría han dedicado su vida a la cultura, escritores, poetas, cantautores, pintores, cineastas. También yace el primer historiador que tuvo la ciudad el fundador de la Oficina del Historiador, una institución dedicada a preservar y promover el patrimonio y la cultura de La Habana. En una parcela más solitaria se encuentra la sepultura del Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler junto a otra a su lado con los restos de su madre. Este Historiador de la Habana lo recordamos aun de una manera entrañable ya que fue el hombre que dedicó gran parte de su vida a la labor de recuperar, restaurar y devolverle el esplendor y la memoria histórica a muchas zonas de interés patrimonial en La Habana Vieja. A su lado una gran campana de bronce y una bandera cubana acompañan su memoria como símbolos de la identidad y la historia de Cuba. El jardín está adornado con esculturas de diversos artistas, pero la más notable es la que le da nombre al lugar, una figura en bronce en honor a la Madre Teresa de Calcuta. Sentada sobre una roca sostiene en sus manos una biblia de la que cuelga un rosario. Aunque diminuta, su actitud de humildad y serenidad transmite, incluso en bronce, la espiritualidad y la fortaleza de una mujer que eligió una vida de sacrificio y entrega por los más necesitados. Al fondo del jardín casi al final del gran camino central, hay una sencilla edificación. A medida que nos acercamos nos percatamos de que reluce precisamente por su elegancia discreta, sin ornamentos excesivos dejando que su forma y elementos hablen por sí solos. Se trata de la Sacra Catedral Ortodoxa Griega San Nicolás de Mira. Todo el entorno de este plácido sitio está sembrado de plantas ornamentales y árboles. Hay bancos a la sombra y todo el ambiente está concebido para invitar al descanso, a la contemplación y a la meditación. Es un jardín muy hermoso que recomiendo visitar si se busca un momento de paz, de conexión, o simplemente el refugio del silencio en medio del bullicio de la ciudad.
