Although the municipality of Centro Habana has been founded relatively recently, the same cannot be said of its neighborhoods, streets, and buildings, many of which date back to the early years of the colonial era when the city began to expand beyond its sheltered walls. That is why, when walking through Centro Habana, we can admire and bear witness to that past.
For me, there is always something that catches the eye and makes me think of an earlier time, a peeling facade that still retains some of its former splendor, a park with century-old trees, or even a small palace that resists the passage of time with dignity, such as the Palace of Aldama.
This large building, located on one side of the The Fraternity Park and whose main façade faces Amistad Street, was once the residence of an aristocratic Havana family. Over the years it passed through different owners and has had various uses. Due to its size, it occupies an entire block, and although it has been restored on previous occasions, it is currently undergoing new conservation work. Despite its age, it is a construction of great beauty that lends the surroundings an air of nostalgia and solemnity.
In the streets surrounding this building, with the The Fraternity Park as the center, a great number of classic cars circulate, the so-called ‘almendrones’, from the 1950s, which mostly operate as taxis. Their presence reinforces that sense of permanence and antiquity that characterizes Havana, as if it were frozen in the past, in an eternal postcard.
The Fraternity Park is another example of a site built in the past century; it was erected as a symbol of unity among the peoples of the Americas. It is another one of those places where time seems to pass slowly. At its center rises a great ceiba tree surrounded by an iron fence, where soil brought from different nations was once deposited as a tribute to continental fraternity.
Every time I walk through these surroundings, I feel that the history of the city still exists beneath its layer of modernity, and that it will continue to exist for many more years for the enjoyment of those of us who live in it.

Aunque el municipio de Centro Habana tiene relativamente poco tiempo de fundado, no ocurre lo mismo con sus barrios, calles y edificaciones, muchas de las cuales se remontan a los primeros años de la época colonial cuando la ciudad comenzó a expandirse más allá de sus resguardadas murallas. Por eso al caminar por Centro Habana podemos admirar y ser testigo de ese pasado. Para mí siempre hay algo que llama la atención y me hace pensar en una época anterior, una fachada desconchada que aún conserva algo de su antiguo esplendor, un parque con árboles centenarios, o incluso un palacete que se resiste al paso del tiempo con dignidad, como lo es el Palacio de Aldama. Esta gran edificación, ubicada en uno de los costados del Parque de la Fraternidad y cuya fachada principal da a la calle Amistad, fue en otro tiempo la residencia de una familia aristocrática habanera. Con el paso de los años pasó por diferentes propietarios y ha tenido diversos usos. Por su extensión ocupa toda una cuadra, y aunque ha sido restaurada en ocasiones anteriores, actualmente se encuentra sometida a nuevas labores de conservación. A pesar de su antigüedad es una construcción de gran belleza que aporta al entorno un aire de nostalgia y solemnidad. En las calles que rodean esta edificación y tomando como centro el Parque de la Fraternidad, circula una gran cantidad de automóviles clásicos, los llamados almendrones, de los años 50 del pasado siglo, que en su mayoría funcionan como taxis. Su presencia refuerza ese aire de permanencia y antigüedad que caracteriza a La Habana, como si estuviera detenida en el pasado, en una postal eterna. El Parque de la Fraternidad es otro ejemplo de sitio construido en el siglo pasado, fue erigido como símbolo de unión entre los pueblos de América. Es otro de esos lugares donde el tiempo parece transcurrir lentamente. En su centro se alza una gran ceiba rodeada por una verja de hierro, donde alguna vez se depositó tierra traída de diferentes naciones como tributo a la fraternidad continental. Cada vez que camino por estos alrededores siento que la historia de la ciudad, sigue existiendo bajo su capa de modernidad, y que seguirá existiendo por muchos años más para disfrute de los que vivimos en ella.
