“A fine crew you have selected Sairrr....it makes us proud to be part of it!” “Canty tae hear it officer…” The captain replied absently as he focused on the auction below.

[On the Youngstown wharf…front and center La Serpent…]
A slight lull in the bidding found the townsfolk huddled in groups, combining resources and weighing out possible partnerships when Seaman Thebighigg came jogging down the wharf, waving a paper in his hand. Lieutenant Gratefuleveryday glanced to his right and spotted him….
“What is it man?!” “A…a bid Sairrr!....” The young seaman said, slightly winded, “An anonymous bid!” “What?! Let me see that….” Grateful replied as he unfolded the paper and read it.
His eyes grew wide and he looked out at the crowd…
”We have anonymous bid!” He yelled out.
A sudden hush settled over the crowd as all eyes landed on the Lieutenant. Standing next to him on his right was Junior Petty Officer Trayan and to his left, Able Seaman Cve3- both men tightening their grip on the hilts of their swords, not knowing how the crowd would react to this development.
Meanwhile Gratefuleveryday read and re-read the note carefully…
“Come on!”, ”Git on with it!”, ”What’s the bid?!” The crowd roared in impatience.
Grateful looked up and held up his hand for silence….
“We have an anonymous bid…” He started, wiping sweat off of his brow, “of eight hundred ounces, plus a thousand more…”
“Auooooooh!” The crowd moaned.
“Plus…a gold sovereign!” Grateful finished holding the paper high in the air over his head.
“A gold sovereign?!” ”Who’s bidding in gold?!” ”How much is that in silver?!” The crowd roared as Lieutenant Gratefuleveryday started scribbling equations on the back of the bid.
“The total bid….one thousand and twenty-seven ounces of silver!”
The crowd grumbled ever louder and at the announcement. Nearly at the same time the ale pubs announced their opening and a third of them left the wharf. The crowd was now smaller, but their pockets- deeper!
“Two thousand ounces!” The big man in the blue velvet vest yelled out, nodding proudly as he did.
“Thrilling race! We have two thousand ounces! Do I hear two thousand-five hundred?!”
”Three thousand ounces!” The stately trader in the long leather coat yelled out.
Now another portion of the crowd meandered away from the wharf and towards the ale shacks! Suddenly the man in the blue vest yelled out for ale…
“Ale! Bring us ale!” He yelled back towards the shacks waving a silver coin in the air.
Up top, the captain smiled as he listened and nodded slightly.
[North side of the river…south of Youngstown…]
“How much farther Lupega, the sun is getting low in the sky!” Leyla asked with a concerned look at the western sky.
“Leyla, you must trust me, I’m the guide! Maybe if I drink a coffee I could remember the Keptin’s name. A guide must have knowledge and generate trust!”
“Yes, but will we make it before dark?” She pressed, feeling somewhat uneasy.
Lupega stopped and looked at the sky, then gazed as far north as he could along the river….”I think we should make camp here, before dark. Tomorrow we will find my ship for sure!”
Leyla rolled her eyes slightly as she pondered the thought of spending the night in the wild…with a total stranger.
“I do hope I can trust you!” She said resolutely as she dropped her back-pack to the ground beside her. “Okay, then I'm fine. I hope I continue to receive my pension…”
Leyla shook her head as she slowly began to unpack the food that she prepared that morning. It was clear that something must have happened to this young sailor…something traumatic.
