Understanding People Beyond the Surface: How DOPE Helped Me Lead Better

DOPE Personality Model

Since 2015, I’ve been using the Bird Personality model (DOPE: Dove, Owl, Peacock, Eagle) to analyze and manage my teams. While there are many other personality tests that are more widely recognized or considered more “scientifically accurate,” this simple tool has worked wonders for me. And honestly — what works for me, works for me.

Over time, it has helped me sharpen my ability to identify a person’s potential and limitations. I use it not just to understand individuals, but also to prevent issues before they arise — especially when team members exhibit strengths or gaps tied to their personality traits.

The biggest takeaway? It has transformed the way I assign responsibilities — placing the right person in the right role to allow them to grow, thrive, and shine in their element.

But perhaps even more importantly, it has reshaped how I view people. In the past, I might have judged or criticized a colleague whose approach clashed with mine. But once I understood their personality style, I became more accepting, even if I didn’t fully agree with how they did things.

Knowing their personality allowed me to appreciate their perspective rather than resist it.

At the end of the day, leadership isn’t about changing people to fit our mold — it’s about understanding who they are, and helping them become the best version of themselves.
