Telephone cards were the pinnacle of phone calls in the late 20th century, replacing telephone tokens and becoming the essential item for calls via public payphones, a device found in practically all areas of Brazil. They became so popular that their design changed to attract the public's attention. Over time, creative images were added, and collections were distributed throughout the country. Completing a card collection was motivating; people bought them just to have the missing item from a specific collection. The print run was another problem; in a country with about 200 million inhabitants, cards with a print run of less than 50,000 units became rare and acquired absurd values ​​over the years. There were also cards that were only released in specific states; it was a real battle to acquire the missing ones to complete collections.

I consider myself a telecard collector; I've been collecting phone cards for over 20 years and have around 20,000. For those in the know, that's a relatively small amount. I prioritize items only for specific collections. Today, I'll share a little about my collection with you and begin a series of posts showing some collections I've managed to complete. I usually keep them in folders, specific plastic sheets, specific protectors, and in a chest to minimize ambient dust. I'm possessive about them, only removing them from their protective cases in specific situations.

Detailing the telephone cards: they have an attractive image on the front, and on the back, there's information about the image, the type of collection, the number of cards in the collection, and the print run. This is an active market in Brazil, and whenever I can, I'm acquiring more to complement some collections and make them even more beautiful. I'm showing this superficially; I'll detail it more clearly in my next posts.
