Hive- Reachout/ inleo initiative 61: Discipline vs Motivation: Two Concepts That Shape Human Behavior

@joyben · 2025-08-20 15:57 · Hive Reachout

Good evening, members of the Hive-Reachout family, it feels good to have you here in this space. This is week 61, and I'm glad to be a part of this week's prompt.

I'm asked to write on Discipline vs Motivation. It's a nice topic to write on. I will share my view on this as well.

It's good to share our views on matters like this because in the world we live in, discipline vs motivation rules.

Before I continue, I would love to tell you what discipline is all about. To me, discipline, is a virtue. It deals with the act by which an individual positions or cautions himself against several things that are not helpful to him anymore.

In other words, discipline means training oneself, and setting both standards as well as a lot of rules, which usually leads to both consistency and hard work. One who is disciplined has self-control.

This means such a person needs to be careful, and watchful at all times so it won't distort the rules he has set for himself.

In discipline, no one forces you to do it, you will be the one to do it yourself. And while disciplining yourself, you're trying to avoid distractions to stay focused.

A disciplined person always stays consistent and makes sure they prioritize their goals no matter what.

Motivation, in my understanding, refers to the inner urge or drive that usually lures someone to carry out a particular act at a given point in time.

One can be motivated negatively, due to a certain misunderstanding or due to the grudges they hold against each other. Motivation, on the other hand, could be positive. It is positive when the urge leads to or produces a tangible result.

Motivation could come as a result of dreams, challenge, or any other way. Something must always happen before motivation comes in.

There's one thing I've learnt about discipline and motivation. Without motivation, there would be no discipline. That means once you're motivated to carry out a certain task, it is discipline that will shape you.

It will help you stay focused till your dreams are accomplished.

I want to share my experiences on these. When I was fourteen years old, my mother told me what discipline was all about. But hers was from an educational perspective, and since then, I took my studies seriously.

Then concerning motivation, I've been motivated to learn an online skill for the past two weeks. I saw a photo online, and it has a catchy graphics design.

So I decided to find out who did it, and I finally found out the person. So I asked him if he could teach me and he said yes.

Currently, I'm still learning it. But what baffles me is that I've been able to design a catchy flyer by myself. I'm glad that I did it myself.

This post is in response to Hive-reachout Initiative week 61.

Thank you all.
