Aside from the remains of the walls and towers that once guarded it, as well as its castle or fortress, no less severely damaged by the ravages of time, Caracena, in addition to preserving a distinctly medieval architecture, is also characterized by two true gems of Romanesque architecture, which, in addition, constitute a treasure waiting to be discovered: the churches of Saint Mary and Saint Peter Ad Vincula.
Two churches of the same style, but conceived with different visions: the first, more primitive and crude, still retains some older pre-Romanesque elements, such as the small lattices that recall, and possibly relate to, those that characterized the so-called Asturian Art or Pre-Romanesque; and the second, more balanced and harmonious, proudly displaying, in addition to a suggestive archetypal sculpture, not without curious details, a beautiful porticoed gallery.
The latter is precisely the one that raises the greatest suspicions, since, although there are no historical documents to corroborate it, it is associated with a religious-military Order, that of the Knights Templar, based on certain elements, undoubtedly subjective but suspicious, such as a mysterious corbel in its apse, in whose triface or Trinitarian appearance some have wanted to see the figure of the mysterious Baphomet they supposedly worshipped, as well as fragments of a tombstone, which speaks of "the evil sect," a detail that, furthermore, would link it, to some extent, with the inscription also found on the central aedicule of the Segovia church of Vera Cruz, which refers to "those brothers who were lost."
Aparte de los restos de murallas y de los torreones que la guardaron un día, así como de esa otra estructura, no menos adolecida por las funestas acometidas del tiempo, que es su castillo o fortaleza, Caracena, además de conservar una arquitectura netamente medieval, se caracteriza también por tener dos auténticas joyas de la arquitectura románica, las cuales, por añadidura, constituyen todo un tesoro por descubrir: las iglesias de Santa María y de San Pedro Ad Vincula.
Dos iglesias de un mismo estilo, pero concebidas con diferente visión: la primera, más primitiva y tosca, pero que todavía conserva algunos elementos prerrománicos más antiguos, como las pequeñas celosías que recuerdan y posiblemente la emparenten, a aquellas otras que caracterizaban al denominado Arte o Prerrománico asturiano y la segunda, más equilibrada y armónica, luciendo con soberano orgullo, además de una sugestiva escultura arquetípica, no exenta de curiosos detalles, una hermosa galería porticada.
Esta última es, precisamente, la que levanta mayores suspicacias, pues, aunque no existen documentos históricos que lo corroboren, se la asocia con una Orden religioso-militar, la de los caballeros templarios, en base a ciertos elementos, indudablemente subjetivos aunque sospechosos, como un misterioso canecillo en su ábside, en cuyo aspecto de trifaz o trinitario algunos han querido ver la figura del misterioso Baphomet al que supuestamente adoraban, así como los fragmentos de una lápida, donde se habla de ‘la secta mala’, detalle, que, además, la relacionarían, en cierta medida, con la inscripción que se localiza también en el edículo central de la iglesia segoviana de la Vera Cruz, que hace referencia a ‘aquellos hermanos que se perdieron’.
