If there is something that identifies the ancestral cultural roots of the primitive inhabitants of this small paradisiacal corner of Northern Spain, which is Cantabria, it is none other than the surprising and enigmatic funerary stelae, which, apart from indicating a remarkable sensitivity towards deceased and the cult and respect for ancestors, incorporate a whole symbolism, of a character, one might suspect, that universal, that leads to think of a common root and little or nothing admitted by official Archeology or, failing that, in that wonderful lost universe, which, metaphorically and comparatively speaking, C.G. Jung defined as the Collective Unconscious.
The solar symbology of these formidable discoidal stelae -which today have become a benchmark for Cantabria, in the same way, for example, that the bear and the strawberry tree or Las Meninas by Velázquez, are for a city like Madrid- with the addition of polyskeletons, swastikas, suns, crosses, concentric circles and even labyrinths, they also have a commercial use, being located in all kinds of souvenir objects or in colorful t-shirts, which, in their own way, contribute to rescuing from oblivion the symbology of some beliefs, which, despite the efforts of Christian evangelizers, the Cantabrians never ended up forgetting.
Si hay algo que identifica las ancestrales raíces culturales de los primitivos habitantes de este pequeño rincón paradisíaco del Norte de España, que es Cantabria, no es otra cosa, que las sorprendentes y enigmáticas estelas funerarias, que, aparte de indicar una notable sensibilidad hacia los finados y el culto y respeto a los antepasados, incorporan todo un simbolismo, de carácter, podría sospecharse, que universal, que induce a pensar en una raíz común y poco o nada admitida por la Arqueología oficial o, en su defecto, en ese maravilloso universo perdido, que, metafórica y comparativamente hablando, C.G. Jung definió como el Inconsciente Colectivo.
La simbología solar de estas formidables estelas discoidales -que hoy día, se han convertido en un referente de Cantabria, de la misma manera, por ejemplo, que la osa y el madroño o las Meninas de Velázquez, lo son de una ciudad como Madrid- con el añadido de polisqueles, esvásticas, soles, cruces, círculos concéntricos e incluso laberintos, tienen, además, un uso también comercial, localizándose en todo tipo de objetos para el recuerdo o en vistosas camisetas, que, a su modo, contribuyen a rescatar del olvido la simbología de unas creencias, que, a pesar de los esfuerzos de los evangelizadores cristianos, los cántabros nunca terminaron de olvidar.
