Despite the irreparable heritage losses suffered by the Principality of Asturias during different periods of its fascinating and sometimes dark history, and despite its emphasis mostly on Romanesque architecture, whose churches and monasteries once numbered in the hundreds, of which, unfortunately, only a few survive today, this long-lived and spectacular monastery of Saint Savior of Cornellana stands out among them.
A legendary place, nestled on the banks of important rivers, such as the Narcea, as it passes through the splendid municipality of Salas, its foundation, estimated around the year 1021, makes it, and continues to make it, one of those invaluable reinforcements of the so-called Primitive Way or Northern Way, known to every pilgrim, who has, in its historic quarters, a place to rest and recover from the vicissitudes added to the hero's journey, which, after all, entails the transcendental adventure of walking towards Compostela following the path marked in the sky by the stars of the Milky Way.
A pesar de las irreparables pérdidas patrimoniales sufridas por el Principado de Asturias durante diferentes periodos de su apasionante y en ocasiones, oscura historia y a pesar de cebarse la mayoría de las veces en unas arquitecturas, las románicas, cuyas iglesias y monasterios llegaron a contabilizarse a centenares, de los que, por desgracia, tan sólo sobreviven unos pocos en la actualidad, destaca, entre ellos, este longevo y espectacular monasterio de San Salvador de Conellana.
Lugar legendario, asentado a la vera de ríos importantes, como el Narcea, a su paso por el espléndido Concejo de Salas, su fundación, estimada hacia el año 1021, hace y todavía continúa haciendo de él, uno de esos inapreciables refuerzos del llamado Camino Primitivo o Camino del Norte, conocido por todo peregrino, que tiene, en sus históricas dependencias, un lugar donde descansar y reponerse de las vicisitudes añadidas a su viaje del héroe, que, después de todo, supone esta aventura trascendental que es siempre caminar hacia Compostela siguiendo el camino marcado en el cielo por las estrellas de la Vía Láctea.
