What, since the time of Alfonso II the Chaste, began as a relatively safe pilgrimage route within a Spain practically invaded since the 7th century, with the collapse of the Visigothic kingdom. It developed either along the rugged paths of the Cantabrian coast, or branched off towards Liébana and the Europe Peaks, or headed towards Oviedo, taking advantage of inland roads, and, once there, connecting with the itinerary followed by this sovereign to Compostela. It also became, due to its media-covered uniqueness, its beauty, and its countless pleasures, a path of the senses, where details, even the seemingly most irrelevant, left a profound mark on the minds of travelers and pilgrims.
Landscapes of supernatural picturesqueness, where mountains, valleys, and coasts alternate with the majestic presence of legendary architecture, whose rugged idiosyncrasy still poses numerous enigmas for specialists. Added to this are glorious sunsets, where sky, sea, and land seem to merge in a fraternal embrace, shared in partnership with the nobility of simple, open-minded people, always ready to firmly grasp the extended hand and share a table with strangers, in the warmth of extraordinary cuisine. While it dulls the spirit, it is undoubtedly an invaluable fuel for the body—which, after all, is what it's all about—to boldly achieve its transcendental goals: Northern Way, the path of the senses.
Lo que, desde los tiempos de Alfonso II el Casto, comenzó siendo un camino de peregrinación relativamente seguro dentro de una España prácticamente invadida desde el siglo VII, con el colapso del reino visigodo, desarrollándose, bien por los accidentados senderos de la quebrada costa del Cantábrico, bien bifurcándose hacia la Liébana y los Picos de Europa o dirigiéndose hacia Oviedo, valiéndose de los caminos del interior, para, una vez desde allí, enlazar con el itinerario que siguió este soberano hasta Compostela, se convirtió, también, por su mediática singularidad, por su belleza y por sus innumerables placeres, en un camino de los sentidos, donde los detalles, incluso aquellos más irrelevantes, en apariencia, dejaban una profunda huella en el ánimo de viajeros y de peregrinos.
Unos paisajes de sobrenatural pintoresquismo, donde montaña, valle y costa se alternan con la majestuosa presencia de unas arquitecturas legendarias, cuya tosca idiosincrasia todavía plantea no pocos enigmas a los especialistas, a lo que habría que añadir unos gloriosos atardeceres, donde cielo, mar y tierra parecen fundirse en un fraternal abrazo, compartidos, en comandita, con la nobleza de unas gentes sencillas y abiertas, siempre dispuestas a estrechar con fuerza la mano que se les tiende y compartir mesa con el forastero, al calor de una gastronomía fuera de serie, que, si bien embota el espíritu, no cabe duda de que es un inestimable combustible para hacer que el cuerpo, que, al fin y al cabo, también de eso se trata, alcance con ánimo sus trascendentales objetivos: Camino del Norte, el camino de los sentidos.
