Wise folklore says that every paradise inevitably has its corresponding serpent. Perhaps for this reason, the journey Antonio Machado made to the Court of Pinares, stopping in Vinuesa and undertaking the inevitable ascent to the Black Lagoon in the Urbion Peaks, was disrupted by horrendous crimes that occurred a few kilometers further on, in the area of Duruelo de la Sierra, a town that, in addition to being located on the border of one of the most archaic areas of Burgos—with the medieval necropolis of Revenga and the ascent to the ineffable places where the Arlanza River rises and the impressive glacial lagoons of Neila are reached—could also have served as the perfect setting to shape the basic psyche of one of his most impressive and charismatic works: the Land of Alvargonzález.
Chronicles claim that, even traveling by stagecoach, on foot, and on the back of an old donkey, the poet, faithful to the scent of wisdom in his own poems, traveled as usual, even as when traveling by train, always traveling with a third-class ticket: light on luggage. Although no newspaper of the time reported on the trip, it is assumed that autumn was beginning to make itself felt in the air, and although the climb was accompanied by the force of lightning and a storm, the poet's fertile creativity was definitively seduced by a primordial spectacle, in which the perfect oval of water, eternally gazing at the moon and fixing the candlelight of the stars on the unalterable surface, whispered arcane secrets to him, understood only by those who surrender unconditionally to the sublime supernatural alchemy of Nature.
Dicen las sabias lenguas populares que todo paraíso tiene, inevitablemente, su correspondiente serpiente. Quizás por ello, el viaje que Antonio Machado realizó a la Corte de Pinares, haciendo en escala en Vinuesa y acometiendo el inevitable ascenso hasta la Laguna Negra de los Picos de Urbión, se vio alterado por unos horrendos crímenes acaecidos algunos kilómetros más adelante, en la zona de Duruelo de la Sierra, pueblo, que, además de estar situado en la frontera de una de las zonas más arcaicas de Burgos -con la necrópolis medieval de Revenga y el ascenso hasta los inefables lugares donde nace el río Arlanza y se alcanzan las impresionantes lagunas glaciares de Neila- que pudieron haber servido, además, como escenario perfecto para moldear la psiquitectura básica de una de sus obras más impresionantes y carismáticas: la tierra de Alvargonzález.
Aseguran las crónicas, que, aun viajando en diligencia, a pie y a lomo de burro viejo, el poeta, fiel al aroma de sapiencia de sus propios poemas, iba, como de costumbre, incluso como cuando viajaba en tren, abonado siempre al billete de tercera clase: ligero de equipaje. Aunque ningún periódico de la época se hizo eco, se supone que el viaje, recomendado por uno de sus amigos, el escritor Pío Baroja, el otoño comenzaba a dejarse notar en el ambiente y aunque la subida se vio acompañada por la fuerza del rayo y la tormenta, la fértil creatividad del poeta se vio definitivamente seducida por un espectáculo primordial, en el que el óvalo perfecto de agua que mira eternamente a la luna y fija la luz de candil de las estrellas en la inalterable superficie, le susurró secretos arcanos, solamente comprendidos por quien se pliega sin condiciones a la sublime alquimia sobrenatural de la Naturaleza.
