Before Bécquer discovered them, drawn by the fantastic stories and legends that the gentiles of Soria told him under the atmosphere tainted by the smoke of cigars imported from Cuba, and emboldened, moreover, by that reckless character that distilled spirits always impart, the gypsies, despite being beloved children of superstition, had already taken possession of the ruined Saint John monastery located on one of the banks of the Duero as it passes through Soria, toasting with bitter wine the health of their patron saint, Ahasuerus, who, like them, bore the ancient curse of wanderers.
Furthermore, these must have been the days when autumn, with its traditional swan song, marking the futile resilience of leaves that already know they are irremediably condemned to be battered by the wind, was inexorably approaching a night of the Dead, which there, on the edge of the desolate Mount of Souls, could be considered a scene as overwhelming as the witches' sabbaths of the famous Walpurgis Night described by the master Goethe in his immortal "Faust," where the power of the supernatural was unleashed with the wrath of the ancient Furies.
Bécquer's feverish mind, perhaps not so much due to the illness that consumed him as to his obsessive fascination with the fantastic, soon felt the seduction of that cloister where, protected by a Sacred Geometry of a style unique in Spain, the Amalfi master stonemasons had also added, in great detail, monstrous sculptures, menacing harpies that seemed to fight unconditionally against the Sagittarius-centaurs, alongside peaceful acanthus plants, inexorable fishermen's nets, and eternal Gordian knots very similar to those that, according to legend, not even the cunning Alexander the Great was able to undo, except by cutting them directly with his sword, an action that, ever since, the world remembers with the contempt for reasoning that always involves cutting to the chase.
Antes de que Bécquer las descubriera, atraído por las fantásticas historias y leyendas que los gentiles de Soria le contaban bajo la atmósfera viciada por el humo de los cigarros importados de Cuba, envalentonados, además, por ese carácter temerario que otorgan siempre los destilados, los gitanos, a pesar de ser hijos predilectos de la superstición, ya habían tomado posesión del arruinado monasterio sanjuanista situado en una de las riberas del Duero a su paso por Soria, brindando con vino amargo a la salud de su santo Patrón, Ahasverus, que, como ellos, arrastraba la milenaria maldición de los errantes.
Debían de ser, por añadidura, unas fechas en las que el otoño, con su tradicional canto de cisne, que marca la inútil resiliencia de unas hojas que se saben ya irremediablemente condenadas a ser vapuleadas por el viento, se acercaba inexorable hacia una noche de Difuntos, que allí, a la vera del desolado Monte de las Ánimas, podría considerarse un escenario tan sobrecogedor como los aquelarres de la famosa noche de Walpurgis descritos por el maestro Goethe en su inmortal ‘Fausto’, donde el poder de lo sobrenatural se desataba con la ira de las antiguas Furias.
La mente de Bécquer, febril, no tanto, quizás, por la enfermedad que le consumía, como por su obsesiva fascinación por lo fantástico, sintió pronto la seducción de ese claustro donde, amparados en una Geometría Sagrada de estilo único en España, los maestros canteros amalfitanos habían añadido también, con todo lujo de detalles, esculturas monstruosas, amenazadoras arpías que parecían combatir incondicionalmente contra los centauros-sagitario, a la vera de pacíficas plantas de acanto, inexorables redes de pescador y eternos nudos gordianos muy similares a aquellos otros, que, según la leyenda, ni siquiera el astuto Alejandro Magno fue capaz de deshacer, salvo cortándolos directamente con su espada, acción, que, desde entonces, el mundo recuerda con el desaire al razonamiento que supone siempre cortar por lo sano.
