The plains of Cuenca, like the surrounding lands, the endless steppes of Castile, or the impressive mountains of the north, always bearing the subtle banners of mist, are like metaphorical shelters that have welcomed, since the dawn of time, a very special pilgrim: time itself. And behind it, like well-trained bloodhounds, unpredictable hordes, hungry to leave their mark on this land, inhabited it, squatters of a history that has not always had the last word.
The ruins of Segóbriga, a Hispano-Roman city whose name means "city of victory," are a good example of this. It is important to note that there was a period in which time did not count on the perseverance of the Spanish farmer, and he, always self-sacrificing like the yoke of young men sung about by the poet Miguel Hernández, one day saw how the fruits of the seed he had planted returned to the sunlight in the form of torsos, imperturbable heads, limbs, and carved columns that stretched for miles around.
Then more remains emerged, imposing, unknown remains, which nonetheless revealed a cemetery here, an amphitheater there, or the remains of a Visigothic basilica in that remote corner, around which the liquid gold of olive trees was once collected. Someone spoke, probably an enthusiastic archaeologist, of the surprising discovery of a small Pompeii, which, like Troy, had known people of all origins and conditions, whose memory struggled in the Platonic shadows to see the light again, perhaps with the intention of reminding us, as a lesson we must not forget, of those significant verses by some Roman poet, perhaps Horace, which said: 'sic transit gloria mundi.' Thus passes the glory of the world.
Las llanuras de Cuenca, como las tierras aledañas, las infinitas estepas de Castilla o las impresionantes montañas del norte, siempre portadoras de los sutiles estandartes de la bruma, son como metafóricos albergues que han recibido, desde el alba de los tiempos, a un peregrino muy especial: el propio tiempo. Y detrás de él, como sabuesos bien adiestrados, hordas impredecibles, que, hambrientas por dejar su huella sobre esta tierra, habitaron sobre ella, como ocupas de una Historia que no siempre ha dicho la última palabra.
Las ruinas de Segóbriga, ciudad hispano-romana, cuyo nombre significa ‘ciudad de la victoria’, es un buen ejemplo de ello. Importa, que hubo un periodo en el que el tiempo no contó con la perseverancia del agricultor español y éste, siempre sacrificado como los niños yunteros a los que cantaba el poeta Miguel Hernández, un día vio cómo los frutos de la simiente que había plantado retornaban a la luz del sol en forma de torsos, de cabezas impertérritas, de extremidades y de labradas columnas que se extendían a kilómetros alrededor.
Luego surgieron más restos, restos imponentes, desconocidos, que, con obstante, mostraban un cementerio aquí, un anfiteatro allá o los restos de una basílica visigoda en aquella apartada esquina, a cuyo alrededor, antiguamente se recolectaba el oro líquido de los olivos y alguien habló, probablemente un arqueólogo entusiasmado, del sorprendente descubrimiento de una pequeña Pompeya, que, al igual que Troya, había conocido gentes de toda procedencia y condición, cuyo recuerdo pugnaba en las sombras platónicas por volver a ver la luz, quizás con la intención de recordarnos, como una lección que no hemos de olvidar, aquellos significativos versos de algún poeta romano, tal vez Horacio, que decían: ‘sic transit gloria mundi’. Así pasa la gloria del mundo.
