Centuries after Alexander the Great, but before Marco Polo, the Jesuits, and the great travelers and explorers of the 19th century ventured into Central Asia, India, and the Himalayas, there was an apostle named Bartholomew, a practitioner of medicine who, according to some sources, including, of course, that work by Santiago de la Vorágine used as a reference by artists of all time, ‘The Golden Legend,’ preceded them. We do not know if on his own initiative or because, in that metaphorical game of dice, which, after all, we can assume is Fatum or Destiny, he was so lucky and, on foot or sometimes riding on the back of an old donkey, as that good man whose remains continue to rest in a foreign land, the poet Antonio Machado, would say, he entered the worlds of illusion woven by Maya, in a futile attempt to bring the Gospel to places so fascinating and eternally imbued with the spirit of Buddha, of the Great Mahatmas, and of the enveloping epic of the Upanishads, the Ramayana, and the Mahabharata.
As a doctor or physician of the time, he is said to have performed numerous healings while exercising his evangelical teaching, also confronting black magicians—like Simon, but in a Hindu version—and demons, whom he supposedly defeated. For this reason, he is generally depicted in a similar way to the Archangel Saint Michael, with a subdued devil at his feet and an Arabic sword or scimitar in his hand. He is one of the especially relevant figures in the calendar of saints of the Templars, who dedicated to him, among many others, one of the most unique and enigmatic hermitages, located in the geographic center of Spain, deep within a stunning natural setting: the Río Lobos Canyon.
A Templar hermitage, built at the end of the 12th century and in transition with a style that was beginning to be revolutionary at the time, the Gothic, where still, every August 25th, the day of her name day, one of the most important pilgrimages in Soria is celebrated. Surprisingly, it is not done entirely and precisely in her honor, but in favor of a very charismatic Virgin, the Virgin of Health - however, deep down, everything is related - whose original image, supposedly with dark connotations, is rumored to have been sold by the parish priest who served as its patron saint at the beginning of the 20th century. This detail, however, has not been enough to alienate a parishioner, accompanied each year by more visitors, who, apart from enjoying the celebration that always accompanies every pilgrimage, feel complete devotion for healings, considered miraculous and not always accepted and understood by modern science.
Siglos después de Alejandro Magno, pero antes, no obstante, de que Marco Polo, los jesuitas y los grandes viajeros y exploradores del siglo XIX se aventuraran por el Asia Central, la India y los Himalayas, hubo un apóstol, de nombre Bartolomé y practicante, además, de la medicina, que, según algunas fuentes, incluida, por supuesto, esa obra de Santiago de la Vorágine utilizada como cabecera por los artistas de todos los tiempos, ‘La Leyenda Dorada’, les precedió, aunque no sabemos si por iniciativa propia o porque, en esa metafórica partida de dados, que, después de todo, podemos llegar a suponer que es el Fatum o Destino, le tal suerte y a pie o en ocasiones cabalgando a lomo de burro viejo, como diría aquel hombre bueno cuyos restos continúan reposando en tierra extraña, el poeta Antonio Machado, se introdujo en los mundos de la ilusión tejidos por Maya, en un intento fútil de llevar el Evangelio a unos lugares tan fascinantes e imbuidos eternamente por el espíritu de Buda, de los Grandes Mahatmas y de la envolvente épica de los Upanishads, el Ramayana y el Mahabharata.
Como médico o galeno de la época, se dice que realizó numerosas curaciones mientras ejercía su magisterio evangélico, enfrentándose, además, con magos negros -tipo Simón, pero en versión hindú- y demonios, a los que supuestamente derrotó, por lo que, generalmente, se le representa de un modo similar al Arcángel San Miguel, con un diablo sojuzgado a sus pies y una espada o cimitarra árabe en su mano, siendo uno de los personajes especialmente relevantes dentro del santoral de los templarios, que le dedicaron, aparte de otras muchas, una de las ermitas más singulares y enigmáticas, situada en el centro geográfico de España, en lo más profundo de un entorno natural impresionante: el Cañón del Río Lobos.
Una ermita templaria, realizada a finales del siglo XII y de transición con un estilo que comenzaba a ser revolucionario en la época, el Gótico, donde todavía, cada 25 de agosto, día de su onomástica, se celebra una de las romerías más importantes de Soria, la cual, sorprendentemente, se hace, no en su totalidad y precisamente en su honor, sino a favor de una Virgen muy carismática, la de la Salud -no obstante, en el fondo, todo tiene relación- cuya imagen original presuntamente de connotaciones negras, se rumorea que fue vendida por el párroco que ejercía de titular, a principios del siglo XX, detalle, que, no obstante, no ha sido suficiente como para alejar a una feligresía, acompañada cada año por más visitantes, que, aparte de disfrutar de la fiesta que acompaña siempre a toda romería, sienten plena devoción por unas curaciones, consideradas como milagrosas y no siempre aceptadas y comprendidas por la Ciencia moderna.
