Whether or not we ever manage to unravel the exact place where the mortal remains of the great playwright of our Golden Age, Lope de Vega y Carpio, rest in eternal sleep, the truth is that, in Almazán, despite the circumstances that determine the fate of existence over the centuries—even for our Historical, Artistic, and Cultural Heritage, the pragmatic phrase attributed to the Latin poet Horace continues to weigh heavily: "All hours wound, except the last, which kills"—the formidable Romanesque church of Saint Michael remains that unalterable beacon, where beauty aligns with eternity.
This is perhaps most evident when we see, feel, and experience this summer opening calendar, where the open doors of our ancient monasteries, temples, and hermitages attract a public that is beginning to experience the cultural adventure provided by that ambivalent period, which, in part, was the Middle Ages, opening up a wide range of possibilities from the perspective of its shadows, but also its incredible lights.
And in the case of our fascinating church of Saint Michael, the somber footlights of the nave are amply rewarded by the sublime vision of the piece, Mudejar in this case, that best represents it, not only on the physical, functional, and aesthetic level, but also, and not without importance, within the realm of the symbolic and the celestial, which was so present at that time and formed part of the mastery of the stonemasons' guilds, who, even in their anonymity, were distinguished by the meticulous workmanship of their works: the marvelous eight-pointed star that crowns its spectacular dome.
Consigamos o no algún día desentrañar el lugar exacto en el que reposan su sueño eterno los restos mortales del gran dramaturgo de nuestro Siglo de Oro, Lope de Vega y Carpio, lo cierto, es que, en Almazán, pese a las circunstancias que determinan los destinos de la existencia al cabo de los siglos -incluso para nuestro Patrimonio Histórico, Artístico y Cultural, continúa pesando la pragmática frase atribuida al poeta latino Horacio: todas las horas hieren, excepto la última, que mata- la formidable iglesia románica de San Miguel, sigue siendo ese faro inalterable, donde la belleza se alía con eterno.
Esto, quizá se haga más patente de comprobar, de sentir y de vivir aprovechando ese calendario de aperturas estivales, donde las puertas abiertas de nuestros ancestrales monasterios, templos y ermitas consiguen atraer a un público que comienza a sentir la aventura cultural que proporciona ese periodo ambivalente, que, en parte, fue la Edad Media, abriendo un amplio abanico de posibilidades desde la perspectiva de sus sombras, pero también de sus increíbles luces.
Y en el caso de nuestra fascinante iglesia de San Miguel, las sombrías candilejas de la nave, se ven ampliamente recompensadas por la sublime visión de la pieza, mudéjar en este caso, que más la representa, no sólo en el plano físico, funcional y estético, sino también y no exento de importancia, dentro del ámbito de lo simbólico y lo celestial, que tan presente estaba en aquella época y formaba parte de la maestría de las cofradías de canteros, que, aun en su anonimato, se distinguían por la esmerada elaboración de sus obras: la maravillosa estrella de ocho puntas que corona su espectacular cúpula.
