It bore witness to the deplorable, disintegrating conditions outside that surrounded the inner cities beyond his home only rumored about. He stared at decay and filth piled high in the building's far end. One huge industrial fan standing opposite did little to prevent the faint odor from mingling with musty air.* >> >*A far cry from the country's *Interdisciplinary Consortium Orbit* (a/k/a the "ICO") protected facilities and compounds that housed the wealthy.* >> >*Benetiz climbed two steps at a time. Upon reaching the platform, he turned and beckoned to Amos.* >> >"Everyone, we have a new refugee. A true believer who's seen the light. Make him welcome as he's been away and doesn't understand what has happened these past few years. Please meet ***Amos Goodall***, brother and brother-in-law to two of our fearless leaders, Annetta and Julius. He was assigned to patrol Area 199 at ICO South as a Level 1 Janitor."* >> >*Still a bit suspicious, Amos shrank back for a moment, then recalled his sister had assigned Benetiz to locate citizens and document their whereabouts while employed at ICO.* >> >*Benetiz continued, "Amos is the latest citizen to have his silver coin deactivated", then beckoned for him to approach the stage and tell his story of captivity.* >> >*The crowd screeched in loud protest, then the room fell silent. Amos swiped his chin before stepping to the microphone. Weary, only thoughts of his parents flooded his senses.* >> >*"I'm not a speaker. I'd rather forget the torture by ICO South and North staff. So, I simply desire a show of hands if any of you have parents that are now detained at an undisclosed location. If so, will you join with me, my sister, and brother-in-law to rescue all our parent and family members?"* >> >*Murmurs erupted form the crowd while they watched Amos descend the stairs and take a seat. Benetiz waved his hand. Instantly, the crowd quieted. He surveyed them, noticing the body count had increased; the facility space hadn't, so decided to remind them of their purpose.* >> >"Fellow citizens of Neodstronia. I want to take this opportunity to welcome again all our new members into our bosom. Our numbers are increasing. I pray they continue. However, our resistance, ***The Silver Revolt*** urgently requires a new facility and a new plan of attack." >> >Benetiz raised his fist, and the crowd chanted their resistance cry: >> > **Remember Our Plight. Remember Our Struggle. >TORCH THE SILVER**! >> >After several minutes, the crowd quieted. He continued. >> >"Let us remember our past so that we may continue to move forward with the torch burning bright once we discover the facility that manufacturers the silver coin. >> >North America. 2154. Noedstonia. Carved out of the Continent of North America. Formed upon conclusion of the Great War of 2054, the new country is a capitalist paradise. Successful in its efforts to secede, the separatists formed this new country to accumulate wealth for the few.. >> >Thus rose the Noedstronian Society. >> >Initially welcomed, the people were misled by the then current leadership. Those who refused to accept the vision needed to be purged from society via four ICO branches for not worshiping their society's Wealth Accumulation Value Echelon scheme, referred to as the WAVE. >> >First, since religion held no importance or value in their beliefs, all forms of religion and the practices thereof were banished. Next came adoption of a new currency: The Silver Coin. >> >Opposing groups dwindled, leaving the poor and uneducated to fight for their freedom. Either accept the new country order by obeying the ICO, or perish. But first, reassignment and reprogram. If redemption fails, purge from society. >> >A cult. Pure and simple with the purge as its major weapon. The systemic removal of the poor; the downcast; the disabled; and the non-ambitious citizens on the continent. The relocation of ambitious citizens to the ICO protected regions. Their ultimate goal. Become a duumvirate, or dyarchy. One to rule the Northern Hemisphere. >> >Over three-fourth of the people of Noedstronia live in exile on their own soil. These people are labeled as the scourge of society just because they will not exchange their former lives for the Silver Coin.* >> >But the single greatest threat to the new society is the Silver Coin that has undermined, pitted citizens against each other, and truly warped into the survival of the richest that led to purging certain groups. By now you all have seen the burning of fields with people running for their lives. >> >The fragment of life. That's what the Silver Coin is touted to represent," Benetiz continued. "The ICO promotes it as our world's savior. It is not and never will be." **Now Part 8:** Benetiz eyed the room, dissenters hunched together whispering while nodding. He smiled upon hearing angry tones and seeing frowns upon their faces. My words have finally sunken in, he hoped. Immediately, his gaze landed on Amos, Annetta,and Julius. Amos stared back before lowering his head. He hated to admit he was wrong about Benetiz and acknowledged to himself that he actually liked the men. What he did in helping to transport him to ICO North was undercover to ensure his whereabouts for Annetta, he was thankful. But to place his full trust in him to lead a rebellion against ICO. A chill swept through his body as he remembered Benetiz tightening the straps of the gurney around his waist, then looking away, tight lipped as his supervisor joked about his meaningless job at ICO South and the probable reason his Silver Coin was deactivated. On that point, Amos required more information about Benetiz. Was he purely a spy? or was he acting as a double agent working for both the ICO and receiving a handsome reward? Benetiz' Silver Coin was still activated. Suspicion swirled through Amos' thoughts. He readily acknowledged though that that this group of protestors wouldn't be here if they didn't believe in the cause and in the man. Amos' thoughts turned to Benetiz's reiteration of the history of the ICO and dire situation the emergence of the authority plunged society into. He scoured the room. Desolate people in a helpless situation. Agreeing with Benetiz, the circumstances appeared hopeless. How can I contribute with my limited knowledge and almost non-existence resources? He scratched his head searching for ways to contribute. His captors were correct. I'm just a lowly janitor with no worldly education on how to counter and eventually comvat tyranny and corruption. Again, he recalled the current plight of the citizens, in which three-fourth of them in Noedstronia were purged. The burning fields and people running for their lives. Next, the systemic removal of the poor; the downcast; the disabled; and the non-ambitious citizens on the continent lived in exile. They're not allowed to travel to the other regions on the continent. These people are labeled as the scourge of society just because they will not exchange their former lives for the Silver Coin. In essence, **survival of the richest**. Annetta interrupted his thoughts as she slid her arm into his and smiled up at him. He gazed down on her face. The only person who loved him besides his parents. If she can fight, then I'll do whatever it takes to contribute. He smiled back, but spoke no answer until a few moments later. "We must locate the facility that manufacturers the Silver Coin. Dismantle the computer system. That will be our target. Of course, I'm no expert," Amos admitted. *"That's a tricky one. Currently, only four ICO facilities exist that we know the whereabouts. The activities that take place at two of them, we're unaware. But does the computer system also store information on the locations of the ICO facilities that house prisoners? We must **discuss this more**,"* Julius interrupted. Julius beckoned to Benetiz, who stood surrounded by a group of indigent families, their children weeping hysterically. "I hate to tell you even worse news and its **implication**," Benetiz proclaimed as he extricated himself and joined Amos, Annetta, and Julius. All three stared blankly at each other as though no additional news could shock them. "Propoganda has ramped up. Daily transmission broadcasts focused on compliance with ICO rules and regulations have flooded people's homes. Then, there are leaflets ICO West dropped into the cities on the west coast. Those family there were distraught as it affected them. They abandoned their homes else face imprisonment after their Silver Coins were partially deactivated awaiting their official written compliance with the rules," Benetiz stated with a solemn expression. Amos didn't want to hear any more news. Convinced the small group of insurgents could infiltrate the ICO facility where the Silver Coin was manufactured, he took to the microphone again. "Are any experts in computer technology among us?" Delighted that several in the crowd raised their hands, he beckoned them to approach the podium. Amos, Annetta, Julius, and Benetiz thanked the men for their willingness to volunteer without even knowing the assignment. Just as he was about to explain to them the plan to infiltrate the ICO facilities, the warehouse door shattered. Military styled vehicles burst through. Despite emergency procedures put in place a few years ago should their location be discovered, citizens panicked. Several dozen men headed to the backroom to retrieve weapons.
