Fuel For Fire: Staying Motivated When The Going Gets Tough

Life is filled with trials and tribulations that test our strength. Have you ever faced life’s difficulties and found yourself asking the universe questions like, “why always me? What did I ever do to deserve this?” Life is like a long race filled with hurdles and sometimes, the hurdles are too high for you to climb on your own. When we find ourselves in moments where the hurdles are too high and our strength is almost completely depleted, we find ourselves in need of something or someone to lean on. This brings me to today’s India United prompt; What do you do when you need motivation?  The importance of motivation cannot be overlooked. It goes a long way in making things better. Sometimes, when we feel like almost giving up on our goals, all it takes for us is to get motivated, whether by a friend or a mentor, a book or even by ourselves.  So what do you do when you need motivation?  When I need motivation, the first thing that comes to my mind is to talk to someone. You see, I have been on the giving and receiving end of this. There have been times when I reached out to people for motivation and there have also been times when people reached out to me for motivation. This reminds me of my days in the university. Out of the blue, one of my friends messaged me, saying that she had been struggling to read. Whenever she picked up a book or material  to read, she wouldn’t get too far with it. It is either she gets distracted by TikTok, instagram reels or other frivolous things, or she falls asleep. She had been battling this issue for weeks and it got to the point where she almost gave up.  At that moment, I was just the right person to ask for reading tips. Before I shared my reading tips with her, we had a long conversation. I marked to her and made sure my tone was a mixture of stern and positive. I reminded her that our goal in school was to come out with beautiful results. I understand that sometimes the body feels weak to read. Sometimes, you just feel like not reading and rather playing around. I can relate to those feelings. However, once I remember my main purpose in school, I get back on track. I also asked her a very crucial question; how many people would be happy if she passed your exams and got good grades? She mentioned her parents, siblings and herself, exactly the answers I wanted.  Since people would be happy to see you pass, why not put in the effort to make it come through? After the talk, I shared my reading tips with her. I also made sure to continue to motivate her to read every day. I have been in this situation. Sometimes, the body feels weak, and in that moment, all you might need is advice or a talk from a friend.  There are other things I do when I need motivation. Sometimes, I reminisce on my life goals. For example, one of my life goals is to make it in and treat my parents well. There are days when I question this goal, days where negative thoughts cross my mind. However, once I remember my life goals, I get right back on my feet, erase the negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones.  This is my entry to the India United prompt.
