Life has an interesting way of pulling its strings. We are the puppets and life is our puppeteer. Life is filled with so many complexities and one of the reasons why it is so is because of humans. Almost everything about human beings is complex, from friendships to relationships and marriages. When we take a good look at these three things, one factor that plays an important role is trust. Long ago, someone shared a very powerful analogy about trust. An adult throws a child up and the child laughs gleefully, not worrying about whether the adult would catch them. Why is this so? This is because the child trusts the adult to catch them in their hands. What would happen if the adult misses the catch? Do you think the child would allow them to throw them for the second time? Even if they do, don’t you think things would be damaged beyond repair.
Trust is very delicate. It takes weeks, months and even years to build but can take seconds to destroy. Trust is like a building. It can take months to build a house. Some might even take years, depending on the size and the availability of resources. To make the job faster, many workers gather, each with different tasks. They mount blocks, construct, analyze, paint and do every other thing and VIOLA! The building turns out beautiful. This same building that took many workers to build can be destroyed by a single man within minutes. All they have to do is bring in a big machine and put it to work. Easy peasy!
Have you ever been in a situation where you genuinely care about someone, whether it is a friend or a partner. For the period you have known them, you have always fought for them, strived for the best. But just a single mistake happens and things turn a different way like that same person never meant anything to you? Trust doesn’t care about whether you have been there for the person all their life. It doesn’t care if you were the one who brought them out of the deepest pit. It doesn’t care whether you once sacrificed everything for their happiness. All trust cares about is “the moment.” The exact mistake that shattered the whole bond.
Most times, “Sorry” is not enough to mend a broken heart. Once trust is broken, it takes a lot to revive it. Even if that happens, there will still be an iota of doubt that will continue to prick the heart. It is like a person who cheats on their partner and asks for forgiveness. Fine, the other person might actually forgive them, but they will keep looking over their shoulders. Doubt will keep looking at them from afar.
Trust is like a ceramic plate. Once broken, the scar remains.
