Michael Reinecke, a retired Australian police officer with 30 years of service in the Queensland Police Service, lost about $1.2 million (equivalent to 40 million Thai baht) in a sophisticated cryptocurrency scam in Thailand. The scam was arranged by a person known as "Alex," reportedly a German national residing in Phuket.

The scam unfolded over more than a year, during which Alex built a trusting relationship with Reinecke via social media. Alex gradually introduced Reinecke to supposed cryptocurrency investment opportunities, promising monthly returns of 5% to 10%. In in-person meetings, Alex showed fabricated dashboards and charts to make the investment opportunity seem legitimate. Trusting these presentations and promises, Reinecke transferred his life savings into the fake crypto platform.

The fraud unraveled when Alex claimed that the cryptocurrency platform had crashed because he lost his phone, leading to the theft of the invested funds. After this excuse, Alex abruptly cut off all communications and disappeared.

Reinecke, supported by his Thai wife and lawyer Kritsada Lohitdee, filed a formal report with the Mueang Udon Thani Police Station in Thailand on July 18, 2025.

In this type of scam the scammers cultivate trust over time through social engineering before exploiting victims financially. Retirees and expatriates are often targeted due to their desire to grow or preserve retirement savings but may be vulnerable to emotional manipulation and lack of technical awareness.

The emotional and financial impact on Reinecke and his wife was significant, as they had planned to use the funds to build a home and potentially open a café.

The incident highlights the rising trend of cryptocurrency scams globally, with losses reaching $3.1 billion in the first half of 2025, an 88.7% increase from 2024. Experts emphasize the importance of verifying investment platforms through regulators, being skeptical of guaranteed high returns, and using security measures such as hardware wallets and two-factor authentication to prevent such scams.

Prompt legal action and awareness are crucial to mitigating risks and protecting investors from similar frauds.
