The Tajikistan government has been compensating energy providers for these losses. The situation involves individuals importing mining equipment from abroad and operating unauthorized mining farms. Currently, several criminal investigations are underway related to these illegal activities.
In Tajikistan, cryptocurrency mining operates in a legal gray area, neither explicitly legal nor illegal, but it is increased by widespread illegal and unpaid electricity usage. Authorities have opened many criminal cases involving electricity theft, implicating thousands of individuals and incurring multimillion-dollar damages.
Efforts to curb the problem include shutting down illegal mining farms and investigating cases where mining devices were found in residential buildings. The government has also increased fines and penalties for electricity theft.
The problem is not confined to Tajikistan; neighboring Kazakhstan is experiencing similar issues with illegal mining and electricity theft, with losses reported in the tens of millions of dollars. The influx of illegal miners into Central Asia, including Chinese and Russian operators, is fueled by low electricity costs and loose regulatory oversight in the region.
Illegal crypto mining in Tajikistan poses a significant challenge to the country's energy infrastructure, prompting ongoing crackdowns and legal actions against operators to recover damages and stabilize the situation.
