When people ask who is more important between a teacher and a doctor, my first reaction has always been that both of them are very important. Teachers shape us, guide us, and help us grow into the people we want to be. Doctors, on the other hand, save lives and make sure we’re healthy enough to live out those dreams. So, at first, it feels like you can’t really choose because society honestly needs both of them.
But when the question is framed as “who is more important?” it changes things. I actually had to sit down for some time and think hard about it. Back then, when i was in secondary school, i always believed that without teachers, there would be no doctors. That is, a doctor is only a doctor because he went to school, learned from teachers, and eventually specialized in medicine. That reasoning made sense to me at the time, and I held on to it strongly, so if you asked me this question at the time, i would have easily said teachers are more important.
But then, as I grew older, and life started throwing real situations at me,i started having a different opinion, which was that doctors protect our lives. And when that life is at stake, no amount of knowledge matters if you are not healthy enough to use it. That realization hit me hard even more some few months ago when I had a very bad stomach infection.
It was one of those times when you don’t care about school, books, or even socializing—you just want the pain to stop. I couldn’t read, I couldn’t concentrate, and I definitely didn’t have the strength to do anything productive. The only thing on my mind was relief. I eventually went to a health centre, and the doctors there attended to me. They gave me injections, prescribed drugs, and even asked me to come back the next day for more treatment. Within a few days, I felt so much better.
However, during that period, I realized so much that if not for doctors, I might not even have had the strength to sit in a classroom or study for an exam.
Don't get me wrong, teachers are very powerful because they shape the future, but then doctors make sure we live long enough to even have a future. Without doctors, so many lives would be lost, and the knowledge we’ve gained from teachers would mean nothing.
So, even though I respect teachers deeply and believe they have a lot of impact on our lives, I’ve come to the conclusion that doctors are more important. Because at the end of the day, life itself comes first, and doctors are the ones who protect it.
