The nearby coral reefs are home to a wide variety of tropical fish, as well as starfish, lobsters, and crustaceans.
The most common activities for visitors include building sandcastles and playing ball games. Hotel guests can rent boats and enjoy other nautical activities like spearfishing.
But my family and I opted for a quiet, sun-soaked retreat—where just breathing in the sea breeze was enough to shake off the city’s hustle.

Hoy quiero contarles sobre una paseo que hice junto a mi familia a la playa Guardalavaca, que se encuentra situada a unos 60 km de la ciudad de Holguín, en la zona oriental de Cuba.
Guardalavaca fue uno de los primeros sitios visitados por Cristóbal Colón durante su llegada a la isla en 1492. Esta región, al igual que gran parte de la costa norte oriental de Cuba, posee una rica biodiversidad tanto terrestre como marina. En sus alrededores abundan especies vegetales como el almácigo, el marabú, el jagüey y distintas variedades de palmas, así como matorrales costeros y vegetación de manglar que cumplen un importante rol ecológico.
En cuanto a la fauna, es común observar aves como el tocororo (ave nacional de Cuba), el cartacuba, los zunzunes (colibríes), y diversas especies de garzas y pelícanos en la zona costera. En los arrecifes coralinos próximos a la costa habita una gran variedad de peces tropicales, así como estrellas de mar, langostas y crustáceos.
Las actividades mas comunes por los visitantes son la construcción de castillos de arena y el juego con pelotas. Los huéspedes de los hoteles pueden rentar botes y realizar otras actividades náuticas como la pesca submarina.
Pero mi familia y yo apostamos por un día de retiro solariego, en el que solo aspirar la brisa marinera nos cambia los aires de ciudad.
