A love song for men.
I have very rarely and only abstractly written love songs - a rule I acquired after realizing it was so odd that they could be so hollow 2 years down when the relationship had unraveled as is the norm for your average well-known love song; I always found it utterly negating—so much thin emotion and so little lasting—and resolved not to add my affective clanging to the cacophony.
In the absence of the particular, the natural progression is, of course, for the whole gender—half the world. I have quite a set at this point.
So many songs, so little time or plan for most of them. Shouldn’t die with them hidden away on a hard drive, I often think.
So I thought I’d share this one I wrote recently—an imperfect iPhone demo.
Has a bit of a Rosie Thomas vibe which I can’t complain about.
“Diamond Coming Clear”
Come home, o, boy To the innocence of youth Don’t heed the lies That only mar the truth
Don’t run away From the man you are, my dear Don’t give up now You’re a diamond coming clear You’re a diamond coming clear
The darkness spoke Into the centre of your heart Let light come now Though it rips you right apart
Don’t run away Though your battle rages here Don’t abdicate You’re a diamond coming clear I see a diamond coming clear
Come home, o, boy You are not just what you’ve done There’s laughter here And a thousand rising suns
Don’t run away Though it’s failure that you fear Fight valiantly For the diamond coming clear I see a diamond coming clear Oh, you’re a diamond coming clear
