We believe we have the cat population under control at the Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi, Thailand. It is difficult to know for sure but we believe that we have sterilized every female cat at the temple and now we are just focused on keeping the ones that are there healthy and fed. I don't have time to go there every day but I go there enough.
Cats are a little more complicated to check on than dogs because they tend to want to stick to themselves and don't generally come running to the front gate when I arrive like the dogs do. I have to seek out the cats but they seem to have some sort of method of talking with one another and as soon as I see a few, some others will appear as well.
We try to keep them spread out because cats don't generally want to be around a bunch of other cats especially of there is perceived competition for food. There is plenty of food with me so there is no need for combat kitties!
many have asked why the buildings look like they are in a state of disrepair so I will address that. The Tiger Cave Temple is being renovated and changed quite a lot at the moment. some of the old buildings are being torn down and others are being renovated. This is a slow moving process so the entire area is just going to look like a construction site for a while.
The cats don't really seem to mind though and all of these cats are outdoor kitties meaning that almost all of them live in the jungle or under a building somewhere. None of these animals are claimed or living indoors
We haven't tried to find forever homes for any of these cats because honestly, compared to the situation for a lot of the cats in Thailand, these cats have it relatively well off. They get fed on a regular basis and they have relative safety here at the temple because there are only a few ways in an out of the huge complex. New additions do occassionally happen when people drop off their unwanted pets, but normally the monks will notice when this happens and let us know. If it is a female we must act quickly to find her and get her sterilized as well.
I was quite pleased to not discover any medical issues and most of the cats seem to be doing well as far as eating is concerned. None of the cats seemed to be suffering and well, that is exactly what we had hoped to accomplish. We can't make it out there every day to feed them so I think that they cats are actually becoming accomplished hunters as well and keeping the temple area relatively rat and mouse free. Nature has a way of sorting these kind of things out provided that one group never gets too large.
The Tiger Cave Temple is one of the more famous and popular temples in all of Thailand and is home to hundreds of stray dogs and cats. We have gotten the situation under control for the time being and hopefully our good relationship with the human management of the temple can continue!
