A Night to Remember: The 6.7 Magnitude Quake in Cebu Last Night

Happy Wednesday Hivers! ## The earthquake on October 15, 2013 is still fresh in my memory. It was early morning, and since I had no duty that day, I stayed in bed a little longer. Around 6 AM, the powerful quake struck. It was terrifying to witness everything around me shaking so violently—the two-storey house, the trees, all moving before my eyes. Fear gripped me, my heart pounded, and I immediately offered a prayer. ##  ## The same kind of incident happened again after 12 years. Just last night, Cebu Province experienced a 6.7 magnitude earthquake. Although it was recorded as 6.7, it felt just as strong to me as the 7.5 magnitude quake that struck back in October 2013. It was truly powerful and frightening. ##  ## Around 9 PM last night, I was already asleep—that’s my usual bedtime whenever I have work the next day since I wake up at 4 AM. I was in deep sleep when the quake struck, and its intensity jolted me awake. It was that kind of moment when you suddenly jump out of bed while your mind isn’t fully functioning yet, and you just run without even realizing if what you’re doing makes sense. That was exactly what happened to me last night. ##  ## My sister, along with her child, evacuated to our brother’s house—which also happens to be where I’m staying. I could still see the fear on their faces. They live on the upper floor of a building, and she described hearing a cracking sound right before the shaking grew so strong. She said she was completely overwhelmed by fear and didn’t know what to do. Even when she tried to open the gate, which was locked, she was already in such a panic that she couldn’t think straight. ##  ## What I learned from the emergency trainings I’ve attended before was proven true—that we should never let fear take over during emergencies. Fear won’t save you, but a calm mind can. When you stay calm, you can think clearly and act correctly. Still, I thank God that they made it home safely, even though they were almost fainting from fear. ##  ## After I had calmed down from what happened, I immediately called my mom and dad to check if they were okay. Thank God, both of them were safe, although they admitted they were badly shaken too. Because of the incident last night, I wasn’t able to focus on checking the news right away—I only did so in the morning. That’s when I saw how much damage the 6.7 earthquake had left behind. Many establishments, churches, and hospitals sustained heavy damage, with some parts partially destroyed. One hospital in Cebu even had to evacuate all its patients. I realized how overwhelming and exhausting it must have been for the hospital staff last night. The photos I’m sharing here are not mine; they are from Sugbo.ph, which provides a lot of updates about events happening in Cebu. ##  ## There were also reports of students who lost their lives while practicing a dance in the gym, although I have not yet been able to confirm the accuracy of that news. It just shows how unpredictable life can be—we may feel safe and sound one moment, but in just a few minutes, God can take back the life He has only entrusted to us.
