Happy Sunday Hivers!

I remember the time my mother said this when my nieces and nephew were just born. She would always remind us not to take the baby out of the house or travel with them until they had been baptized. I’m not sure about other religions, but in the Catholic faith, baptism is very important — it’s one of the seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church. That’s why it’s best to have the baby baptized as soon as possible after birth.

Two weeks ago, I received an invitation from a former colleague asking me to be the godmother at her child’s baptism. It made me remember something from last year. She once shared with me that she went for a check-up because she felt something moving in her stomach. She never suspected that she was pregnant, since she was already used to not having her period for several months. She thought there was something wrong with her stomach and never imagined that she was actually pregnant.

So, I immediately said yes when I received the invitation. On the day of the baptism, I arrived early at the church — around 9:30 AM — even though the baptism was scheduled to start at 10:30. Since I got there just in time for the start of the mass, I decided to attend it first.
##

##
A few minutes after the mass ended, the baptism ceremony started right away. I wasn’t expecting that there would be so many babies being baptized, since most of the baptisms I’ve attended before only had a few.
##

##
It was my first time meeting the baby, and I really enjoyed seeing her because she was so well-behaved. The other babies kept crying, but I never once heard her cry.
##

##
There were many of us godmothers and godfathers. Most of them were old friends of my former colleague. We even filled up an entire long pew in the church.

##
The baby got a bit annoyed with what was placed on her head. After the anointing with oil, they put a cap on her, but the garter was a bit tight. She kept trying to take it off but couldn’t, so she just ended up pouting.
##

##
After the baptism, we took some photos, but some of the godmothers and godfathers didn’t join because they were shy. I honestly can’t remember all of their faces.
##

##
After the baptism, we went to their house for lunch. Their place is a bit up in the hills, and I really appreciated it because it’s surrounded by so much greenery. Their house is a little far from the highway, so we had to walk for a few minutes to get there.
##

##

##
I couldn’t help but smiled to myself because I smelled some food and thought, “We must be getting close to their house — the dishes smell so good already.” And I was right — as soon as we turned the corner, we were already at their place.
##

##
The celebration was simple, but what really mattered was that the baby was baptized. It doesn’t have to be grand or extravagant — what’s important is that the parents fulfilled their duty to have their child baptized, as it is one of the important rites of a Catholic.
